My son is a adhd kid. He has some speech delay also. What is the best way to treat him. Are there any special schools for him.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Stimulants such as methylphenidate and amphetamines are the most common type of medication used for treating adhd. Although it may seem counterintuitive to treat hyperactivity with a stimulant, these medications actually activate brain circuits that support attention and focused behavior, thus reducing hyperactivity. In addition, a few non-stimulant medications, such as atomoxetine, guanfacine, and clonidine, are also available. For many children, adhd medications reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve their ability to focus, work, and learn. Medications also may improve physical coordination. However, a one-size-fits-all approach does not apply for all children with adhd. What works for one child might not work for another. One child might have side effects with a certain medication, while another child may not. Sometimes several different medications or dosages must be tried before finding one that works for a particular child. Any child taking medications must be monitored closely and carefully by caregivers and doctors. Stimulant medications come in different forms, such as a pill, capsule, liquid, or skin patch. Some medications also come in short-acting, long-acting, or extended release varieties. In each of these varieties, the active ingredient is the same, but it is released differently in the body. Long-acting or extended release forms often allow a child to take the medication just once a day before school, so he or she doesn't have to make a daily trip to the school nurse for another dose. Parents and doctors should decide together which medication is best for the child and whether the child needs medication only for school hours or for evenings and weekends, too. For more information about stimulants and other medications used for treating mental disorders, see the nimh mental health medications webpage. The food and drug administration (fda) website has the latest information on medication approvals, warnings, and patient information guides. What are the side effects of stimulant medications? the most commonly reported side effects are decreased appetite, sleep problems, anxiety, and irritability. Some children also report mild stomachaches or headaches. Most side effects are minor and disappear over time or if the dosage level is lowered. Decreased appetite. Be sure your child eats healthy meals. If this side effect does not go away, talk to your child's doctor. Also talk to the doctor if you have concerns about your child's growth or weight gain while he or she is taking this medication. Sleep problems. If a child cannot fall asleep, the doctor may prescribe a lower dose of the medication or a shorter-acting form. The doctor might also suggest giving the medication earlier in the day, or stopping the afternoon or evening dose. Adding a prescription for a low dose of a blood pressure medication called clonidine sometimes helps with sleep problems. A consistent sleep routine that includes relaxing elements like warm milk, soft music, or quiet activities in dim light, may also help. Less common side effects. A few children develop sudden, repetitive movements or sounds called tics. Changing the medication dosage may make tics go away. Some children also may have a personality change, such as appearing" flat" or without emotion. Talk with your child's doctor if you see any of these side effects. You can ask for special schools in your area.

Sir/ Mam. I feel a depression due to work place. In our organisation one superior take position on the basis of 12 years in same company, less experience. One same position college on the basis of 6 years in same company. I am new for organisation with high qualification and experience. Rest are non experience and new for field. Both do politics and always given wrong message to top level, Top level blind faith on him. thanks

Obviously, management will repose more faith int eh old employees. You will have to prove your worth and trustworthiness and will have to bear this injustice (if I may call that so). With your qualification and experience, you must know that. One way to show that you are good at your work and different than the other two is to make written reports and submit to the management, especially if they differ from their perception. Written documents do not lie and remain as evidence. This will obviously take time and careful timing. Anyway, one of the tools of discipline is, the ability to delay gratification. Be patient and use discernment and wisdom in your interventions. You can only succeed.

Do I have dyslexia I always have writing and reading problem I am 20 what should I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
At your age you can identify the particular words that pose a problem to you and then write those words down and articulate the letters and the words they form just as a young kid would do; and you will register an audio-visual memory of those particular words to gradually develop an audio-visual impression and memory of the same. It will be even more useful to write the meanings of those words and relate to them as well. You could sing the words and meanings to make a lasting impression. But you should not rush all the methods at once to learn quicker: it will only confuse you and make it even more difficult, and will lead to frustration. In a more advanced situation you can print index cards of those words and learn to memorize them in the same fashion as mentioned above. As time goes by you may get audio books and listen to them often but always in an atmosphere conducive to good listening. If you wish you could also get the help of reading teachers who will professionally take you from simple material to higher material as you advance in the learning program. The audio mode of learning is slower than the visual mode but speed is not an immediate objective, comprehension and word recognition is. It will be a long process but if you are determined, it will be rewarding. You could have benefited from an earlier intervention, like in childhood, if they had noticed and acted then. Please remember that your intelligence is not in question. So it is up to your commitment, sincerity and above all perseverance.

Hello my name is Kawal my age is 19years old. I want to know how to get rid off stress. Actually I'm a college student and I lots of burden of study during this time. Help me.

Homeopath, Faridabad
Hello, there are few yoga poses which helps in calming your mind and relieves stress, but first learn these under a qualified yoga-teacher as many poses are prohibited in certain diseases or medical conditions! exercises: practice shavasana or corpse pose as it looks like a dead body. If practiced correctly and with full efforts, can relax every body part, relaxing not only the body but also the mind: spread the legs one to two feet apart, the toes are turned outwards, the heels facing each other, a comfortable distance apart. Bring the arms a little away from the body, palms turned upward. Relax the neck and allow it to turn to the side if it is more comfortable. Close the eyes and focus the attention on the body, breathing normally. Begin focusing each body part and relaxing it, then moving on. Keep the mind focused on relaxation, the breath should be normal. Relax the whole body. Anuloma involves inhaling through both nostrils together and exhaling each breath alternately between the left and right nostrils. The thumb of the right hand is used to manipulate the right nostril, while the pinky and ring finger are used to control the left nostril. There are many other poses of yoga like balasan, setu bandha sarvangasan, uttanasan, garudasan, savasana, triconasana, viprita karani, marjaryasana, dhyana, bhujangasana, anulom-vilum, pranayam, etc.

What I do in mental depression ? My body is so sensitive so depression is very effect on me so what I do?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Get urself evaluated by a psychiatrist and get treated. By cbt (cognitive behavior therapy) and antidepressants depression can be reduced. The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say" i'm depressed" when in fact they mean" i'm fed up because i've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly. With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks.

My wife aged 47 years is suffering from depression (i doubt) need counselling please help.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
She must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that she meets with a doctor she must do so and cooperate to her utmost. Please visit these professionals along with her parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because she could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest she does the opposite of what this depression makes her feel like doing (actually, not doing): she will need to fight this condition and you will need to give her a lot of support. She must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer herself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose herself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in her life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If she did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate her sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use her own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, she needs to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get her out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate her, all the hard word must come from her, and her cooperation with that person is very critical for her success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what she has. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please get her to cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

I love Mountaineering. My parents does not want that I will do that. I want to build my Carrier in it. What should I do as I generally get hyper because of this?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Are you suggesting that your parents are an impediment to this career you have chosen? if so there must be reasons for their disapproval: the dangers of this career, or the lack of job and money-making opportunities etc. These could be valid concerns and you will need to prove them otherwise. Obviously you need some support and the best support I can think of is to get it from your mountaineering club or association and have one of the coaches or guides to come meet with your parents and have a talk. Now about this getting hyper, you know that that is not a solution and behaving rationally is the only way through this. No one will take you seriously, if you let your emotions get the better of you. You could also do career guidance counseling and attempt some tests in aptitude determination and take that also as evidence, if it points in this direction. The counselor will be willing to meet with your parents to help bring them around too. In all this you must approach it with a sensible mind and hold your emotions in check. Nothing should be obtained by blackmail: neither by your parents nor by you.
