I have negative thinking and depression problem. I always feel I'm not correct in all matters.

I have negative thinking and depression problem.
I always feel I'm not correct in all matters.
Negative thinking is a part of depression itself. So is feeling of being wrong in everything. If you have been having this feeling of sadness of mood and depression for a long time then you should not hesitate to consult a psychiatrist and consider treatment in form of medicines and counseling. Depression occurs in almost 8-12 % of people and is a treatable disorder.

When I want to talk to my mom who lives in london sometimes my voice will not come?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
When I want to talk to my mom who lives in london sometimes my voice will not come?
There is some fear that comes up that is crippling you to kind of loose your voice. Can you identify what that fear is all about? how has your relationship with her been for all of these years? why is she in london? if you have been too close to her and have not broken out of that closeness in a healthy manner, you are likely to have feelings in that separation: it is called separation anxiety. I recommend that you meet with a female counselor and deal with the feelings that are disturbing you. I see this as a purely emotional disturbance and it can be sorted out quite reasonably. If your mom has been a strict person and has curbed any intimacy, there can be this type of reaction too. It can get further complicated if your father has any kind of role to play in all this too. Please explore all of these possibilities with the counselor and regain your confidence in talking to mom: she is after all your own mom and there should be no inhibitions in that relationship ever. She is and was your primary caretaker and that relationship should always be easy and smooth.

This is very common during menses and called as premenstrual syndrome or pms. This occurs because of hormonal changes and mostly temporary. If this is persistent over the period of menses then it can be cured with 3 months course of medicines.

I want to quit smoking. I ve started smoking a year ago. Since new year I am trying to quit it. I can control it for a week but after a week I can't control myself and I go and smoke a cigarette. I want to quit it completely. What do I do?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Smoking is toxic to your body, mind and well-being. The earlier you can stop this habit, the healthier it can be for you. The lower taste and sinful habit of smoking can be stopped by replacing it with the higher taste. In place of smoking, spend your time by doing yoga and chant the names of god who you have faith in. It has been scientifically proved that by doing yoga and chanting, the habit of smoking can be stopped. By chanting with love, soon you would be swimming in an ocean of pleasure which is million times greater than flickering pleasure of intoxicants like tobacco, nicotine etc, and automatically the attraction to the low taste of smoking would stop.

You are going through grief reaction, which is normal after loss of a loved one. Time is the healer for the emotional and behavioral changes, however if your depression is severe enough to affect you in a significant manner, kindly consult a psychiatrist for short term antidepressant medication, depending on the complaints.

I am suffering from the most serious disease that is trauma of my mothers death and I think my father will also die in nark os what should I do.

Your mother's death must have been a very devastating experience for you. Mother's love and support is indespensible and losing your mother must have created a void in your life. Like you have mentioned, it is huge trauma for you and your father and truma has almost life long impact on the lives of the survivors. It is important to know how you reacted after her death if you have not cried or not shared/expressed you sad feelings then, it might create problems in future for you. Please allow yourself to feel all the pain and express your feelings. Trauma creates an" emotional wound" which has to be treated like a" physical wound" when someone is physically injured and has a deep wound, the doctor needs to apply medicines, and clean the wound periodically. This experience is very very painful for the patient, but if the patient does not do this, then it can create further complications. Emotional wounds are also like this. People many times prefer not to talk about it, suppress it, deny the pain. But this does not help. Like the physical wound, emotional wound needs dressing - which is understanding and talking about the pain. By expressing (by talking or crying) you will relieve your pain. Kindly do that. You can support your father and seek emotional support from him. You both need some more time to come out of it. If possible talk to a counsellor, who will help you understand death and the process of grief. Cherish the good times and memories you shared with your mother. While keeping her memories close to your heart, try to move on with life. Try to accomplish your mother's dreams for you. All the best and take care.

Stress can be an independent factor causing heavy headed ness. Also smoking causes exacerbation of any type of headaches due to increase on heartbeats and blood pressure. So it is best to be avoided. Rather there are so many other reasons to stop smoking too. Consult a psychiatrist, check your blood pressure. You might need some medications to relieve stress momentarily. Later you may use relaxation exercises like yoga and mediation to relieve stress induced headaches.

I am a law student and I want to apply for UPSC examination in near future but the thing is I get stressed as soon as I see huge syllabus and I start avoiding preparation and panic at the last moment. Is there anyway of staying motivated and concentrated for long time. Please help.

B.A. Psychology, M.A. Psychology, Ph. D - Psychology
Psychologist, Delhi
If you are really serious about appearing for the UPSC exams and you can not think of anything besides this , put it up on a sheet of paper and put it somewhere you can see it all the time. Secondly, organise and plan - divide the entire content into smaller chunks. Remember, you cannot know everything, so start with the minimum that you need study . Set targets for what you wish to complete in a month, further divide it into what you would want to finish in a week and then set your daily targets. Setting up daily target, makes things more manageable and helps you focus. Have lots of water, fresh fruits and salads , avoid fried and junk foods and exercise daily- this helps you be more alert and energetic.

I want to make up my mind to study hard. But I am not able to do so. No matter how hard I try I am not able to study. I get too many distractions. And sometimes the distractions are due to myself (like neglecting things. Feeling tired and so.) When I tell this to my parents they just scold me and tell that its due to my negligence. Is their any help you can do? please help me.

Yes please practice meditation at least twice if possible - if not then before going to bed is a must. Take morning exercise/walking/running daily. Do not engage your self too much in mobiles/laptops/night watching.

I'm not able to concentrate and get distracted very easily and I feel very bored. What should I do?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. You must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. If the task is boring, it is natural that that person will sleep or feel sleepy. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly.
