Knee pain is something that can affect anyone - irrespective of their age. While sometimes it may be of minor importance - and can easily be handled by self-care, often, lingering pain is a manifestation of some other serious underlying problem, such as arthritis. In this case, it is imperative that you consult a doctor and take appropriate measures to combat it.
Arthritis: The chief cause of lingering knee pain, arthritis itself can be of a number of types:
- Osteoarthritis, which is a result of deterioration of cartilages due to wear and tear
- Rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory chronic disorder
- Septic Arthritis, causing pain, swelling and redness.
- Gout caused due to the development of uric acid crystals in the joints
Fractures: These are caused by the breaking up of the kneecap due to falls or collisions.
ACL Injuries: Caused due to the tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament (that connects the femur and the shinbone). Especially common in sportspersons such as footballers or basketball players.
Meniscus tears: The meniscus or the rubber-like cartilage (that acts as a shock absorber) can be torn by sudden jerks or excess pressure.
Symptoms:The major symptoms of knee pain include weakness, redness, instability, stiffness or the inability to properly straighten or move the leg. Often, a deformity is also visible, such as a bone sticking out of the leg - in which case it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately.
- Possible risks: Factors which include the odds of being inflicted by knee pain and cause serious complications include :
- Being overweight: This exponentially increases the stress or pressure that is applied on the knee joints - even in doing mundane tasks like walking up and down stairs.
- Excessive physical activity: Some activities, such as sports apply excess stress on the knees as compared to other tasks.
- Loss of muscle flexibility: Tightness or weakness in muscles causes increasing number of problems in the knees. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult an orthopedist.

Joint degeneration is progressive and signs and symptoms gradually worsen over time. Factors like age, gender, and sometimes heredity all play a role and, although there is no cure, there are ways to stave off more pain or compromised mobility later on in life:
1. Control your weight
Maintaining a healthy weight can go a long way toward protecting your joints. Obesity is a clear risk factor for developing some form of joint degeneration. Being overweight strains the joints, particularly those that bear a lot of weight, such as the knees and hips, causing the cartilage to wear away.
2. Stay Active
Although high intensity exercise, direct joint impact and injury from exercise can cause cartilage to break down faster, lack of any exercise may cause the muscles that run along the front of the thigh to remain weak, causing impact on the joints.
Exercise keeps joints healthy and is a key part of both joint degeneration prevention and symptom alleviation. Low impact options such as swimming, yoga, and walking push your heart rate up without putting further strain on joints. Strength training is also important as it increases muscle and bone health.
If fear of joint pain after exercise keeps you from exercising, try using heat and cold on painful joints, or take pain relievers, which may make it easier to exercise and stay active. The safest exercises are those that place the least body weight on the joints, such as bicycling, swimming, and other forms of water exercise.
3. Stand up
Are you guilty of slouching at your desk all day in front of a computer? Good posture alleviates stress on many important joints; it is therefore important to maintain the two natural curves of your spine, whether sitting or standing. The two natural curves are the concave curves between the base of your head and your shoulders, and the one from your upper back to the base of your spine.
4. Supplement with Daily Nutrients
Research indicates that glucosamine supplements help relieve pain and stiffness associated with joint degeneration, particularly when combined with appropriate lifestyle modifications, such as a balanced diet and exercise.
Glucosamine sulphate occurs naturally in the body, and seemingly plays a part in the repair and maintenance of joint cartilage. It is used by the body to produce a variety of other chemicals that are involved in building the connective tissue matrix (tendons, ligaments, cartilage) and the synovial fluid (thick fluid around the joints). Protection of this is critical to avoid suffering later in life.
Glucosamine sulphate has also been proven to reduce symptoms of joint degeneration, including pain (48%), compared to Ibuprofen (52%), which has significantly more side effects (35%) than glucosamine sulphate (6%), as reported in one clinical trial.
Eating fruits such as berries, apples, plums, and peaches that contain antioxidants may also help decrease inflammation.
Stress in general is bad for the body. It can lead to lack of sleep and depression, both of which take a toll on your body. Relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga can help reduce levels of stress and improve your overall health.
So Remain Relaxed,Stress free.
