I have lost my concentration. I can not focus on one thing. I get worried a lot. My mind is constantly thinking something else or the other. I want to calm myself down. Please help me.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You need the help of a counsellor to sort out the worrying. Then you will feel less stressed and will have better concentration. In the meantime do the following: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food. You may also include these noted foods that are good for your brain health: Brain-Friendly Foods MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. But the MIND approach “specifically includes foods and nutrients that medical literature and data show to be good for the brain, such as berries,” says Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology at Rush University Medical Center. You eat things from these 10 food groups: • Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): At least six servings a week • Other vegetables: At least one a day • Nuts: Five servings a week • Berries: Two or more servings a week • Beans: At least three servings a week • Whole grains: Three or more servings a day • Fish: Once a week • Poultry (like chicken or turkey): Two times a week • Olive oil: Use it as your main cooking oil. • Wine: One glass a day You avoid: • Red meat: Less than four servings a week • Butter and margarine: Less than a tablespoon daily • Cheese: Less than one serving a week • Pastries and sweets: Less than five servings a week • Fried or fast food: Less than one serving a week

Generally speaking, before starting medicines from a psychiatrist, it is advisable to get psycho-diagnostic testing done to determine what is the nature of symptoms- is it psychological –requiring counselling/psychotherapy or does the symptom require medicines from a psychiatrist. HOWEVER, WHEN SYMPTOMS ARE NO LONGER NORMAL OR TOUCHING UPON INSANITY, SEE A PSYCHIATRIST IMMEDIATELY. PSYCHIATRIST IS MBBS PLUS MD IN PSYCHIATRY- HE GIVES MEDICINES ONLY. TREATMENT STARTED EARLIER WILL CONTROL THE PROBLEM VERY FAST. YOU MUST SEE A QUALIFIED AND TRAINED PSYCHOLOGIST FOR CORRECT DIAGNOSIS. MANY PEOPLE CALL THEMSELVES PSYCHOLOGIST, JUST AFTER A BA OR GRADUATION DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY, OR AFTER MA OR MASTERS IN PSYCHOLOGY. - A PhD in psychology is reqd. To qualify as doctor. Difference is same as you see MBBS doctor or MD doctor as a specialist for any illness. PSYCHOLOGIST IS AN EXPERT IN DIAGNOSIS BY PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING AND COUNSELLING/PSYCHOTHERAPY I.E. Dear, Alcohol addiction also comes under abuse and addiction. If you?re ready to stop the substance and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from addiction and abuse ?no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn?t easy. But it?s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of addiction. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Take care.

I think I have schizophrenia disorder. Im under lots of family problems at home and it affects me outside of the house and my actions mood and behavior in public. I'm very delusional of my whole family and they look for things behind my back without me saying yes it's like I have no saying or freedom to live comfortable and I'm going mentally health problems it that correct it's schizophrenia disorder.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

It is impossible to give a diagnosis on your description. Nor is it easy for you to make a diagnosis. Schizophrenia is a very complex disease and needs professionals to assess it and to treat it. If you believe that you are mentally disturbed visit a counselor who will assess your condition and give you a professional opinion and diagnosis, if any. At your age and with no one to believe you or listen to you, you could feel very lonely and withdrawn. This itself is enough to disturb anyone. You must also work with the counselor about this negativity and see where it originated from and tackle that situation in your life. Please do not neglect this condition because a lot of unnecessary developments may lead you to worse problems, just by procrastination. There is nothing wrong with admitting that you need help and to even seek it. Many times people delay assistance due to the social stigma. You sound like an educated guy and my advice is to just reach out for the help you need. In the meantime please start vigorous exercise every day, get good sleep, and eat well. You must learn to socialize and involve people in your life. Since you are saying no one is there to believe you and listen to you, there may be a problem within you that is making so many people disregard you. That is a very important place to start with: you. The counselor will help you identify the subtle and obvious ways you are putting people off and you can then work on them to change your social skills.

Dear, you have mentioned about your health problems which includes depression and others. It seems your personality traits predispose you to experience symptoms of anxiety, sadness and emotional sensitivity. You need to consult a good psychologist who can help you in depth in handling your condition. I believe your concentration is lost due to over-thinking, which happens as a by-product of emotional sensitivity. When you get hurt, you may tend to over-think over problems. This makes it difficult to put mind at one place. Some of the features you experience are common in your age too. But since you are bothered beyond usual experiences, so you definitely need to consult a professional. It is not possible for anyone to help you by giving tips and suggestions. You may be having many different reasons and ways of suffering through emotional problems. These need to be talked out with someone. Some of the issues you are going through would be tackled in one or two sessions, but rest need efforts to make long-lasting effects. Have patience and believe in yourself and hope for the best. Take care.

The Golden Key to Accept the Things That You Can't Change

M.Phil in Clinical Psychology, Ph.D. Psychology
Psychologist, Hubli-Dharwad
The Golden Key to Accept the Things That You Can't Change

There are certain aspects of our lives, which we may feel are not upto the mark and you might want to change them. For example, consider a situation that you suffer from dwarfism and people mock you about your height. You may wish that you were taller so that you are not ridiculed anymore. You may feel physically inadequate and stay depressed quite frequently.

No matter what the odds are, you should be able to find a support system somewhere, be it in your friends, family or within yourself. There are a number of methods which you may find useful in dealing with these kinds of situations.

  1. Mediation: Meditation may help in focusing your mind and keeping your mind free from negative thoughts. It helps in improving your concentration and broadens your mind. It may also help in seeing situations in a different manner and in a different light thus, helps you overcome difficult episodes in life.
  2. See things from a different vantage point:Usually we see things from one single standpoint and perceive them in a single manner. It is advised to see the same thing through multiple viewpoints and multiple vantage points in order to get a broader understanding of the entire situation. This helps in making a more logical and balanced decision.
  3. Focus on the positives: Let’s understand with the help of a simple anecdote. One day a teacher gave a student a white piece of paper with a black dot at the center and asked the student what he thought of the paper. The student said that there was a black dot on the paper. Usually, most people tend to focus on the black dot and not the white space surrounding it. Similarly, in life, you should see the positives instead of concentrating only on the negative aspects. This will help you sail through a number of difficult stages.
  4. Build resilience: Being resilient is a very good quality to have, as it can help you overcome a lot of setbacks in life. Problems are a part of life as they might result from external circumstances which you will have no control over. Hence, it is always wise to accept the situation and move on in life.

Dear lybrate user. This is never part of aging. Even aged people / senior citizen know how to enjoy life. You do not know why are you not enjoying as you used to. But on talking to you, we will be able to understand why you are unhappy or why are you enjoying as you used to do. Therefore you need to talk to a psychologist. Enjoyment / happiness is based on perceptions. There could be some wrong perceptions from your side. Take care.

4 Logical Ways to Save Your Relationship When You’re Depressed

M.Sc - Psychotherapy
Psychologist, Gurgaon
4 Logical Ways to Save Your Relationship When You’re Depressed
Ways to Save Your Relationship When You’re Depressed

The foremost thing that you can do to save your relationship is get your spouse treated for depression. When you are depressed, whether it is because of your relationship with your partner or some other reason, you must make joint efforts to save your relationship. Non depressed spouse has to take the lead. A relationship cannot go further only with the patience of one partner. Efforts and care of both the partners go hand in hand.

However, there are few things you can do even when you or your partner is depressed.

1. Communication: Don’t stop communicating with your partner. It’s very important to understand your partner’s viewpoint and to make him understand your viewpoint. Until, both of you share your thoughts and concerns; you will not be able to save the relationship.

2. Think about your commitment: When you are depressed, you might make your partner responsible for all the wrong things. You need to be wise. Don’t let one bad moment spoil your years of relationship. Think of the commitment you have made to your partner and then you might handle the situation in a more loving way.

3. Don’t leave your partner alone for longer time: After presenting your viewpoint, you must give your partner some time to digest everything. What is easy for you might be difficult for him and what is difficult for you might be easy for him? In such a case, you need to leave him alone for some time but do take care that this silence shouldn’t continue for a longer time.

4. Don’t play blame games: If you are depressed, you shouldn’t let your partner suffer from that. Do not strain the relationship any further by playing blame games. That will not help. When your spouse says something that seems negative try not to personalize it, even if it's directed at you. Attribute it to the state of depression.

While this can be a very difficult time for both you and your spouse, you can weather this storm with compassion and empathy.
