Few Ways To Recognize Depression In Adults

Few Ways To Recognize Depression In Adults

Alternating between being happy and sad as you go through life's ups and downs is normal, but if you're sad most of the time, it could be a sign of being depressed.  Depression takes the joy out of all your activities, and can make merely getting through a day feel overwhelming. The first step to overcoming this problem is to understand its symptoms and causes.  Not everyone experiences depression the same way, but here are a few questions that can help tell you if you are depressed or not.

Do you feel helpless?
It is common for depressed people to feel helpless and that everything around them is out of their control. As a result, the person may either stop participating in activities all together or try to control things they can't. Both situations are cyclic and lead to further depression.

Have you lost interest in daily activities?
The feeling of helplessness is one of the main reasons depressed people lose interest in activities. Another reason is that activities that were once enjoyed now do not seem interesting enough. In most cases, this leads to the person isolating himself and withdrawing from all his family and friends.

Do you often feel angry or irritated?
Depression is almost always accompanied by irritability and anger. Small annoyances that would usually be overlooked quickly, take on an inappropriate significance. This can lead to poor impulse control, substance abuse and anxiety disorder. In most cases, anger and depression are related by the person trying to take accountability for things that are out of his control and hence feeling helpless.

Is there a change in your sleep pattern?
Your sleep quality is very closely related to the way you feel. Depressed people often suffer either from insomnia or oversleeping. Depressed people can have trouble going to sleep as well as staying asleep. This can cause drowsiness and lethargy during the day. Sleep apnea is also linked with depression. As you can imagine, if this is left untreated, it will only worsen your depression.

Do you feel tired?
When the body does not get adequate sleep, you begin the day feeling tired. Thus, depressed people often feel fatigued and complain of a number of muscle and joint pains.  This is because the body has not had enough time to regenerate cells during the night. This is usually complemented by complains of persistent headache and stomach aches, both of which are emotionally connected to the way you feel.

The nature of depression is such that it lowers a person's self-esteem to the point of interfering with his ability to seek help. Hence, if you have a positive response to the above questions, it is time to address your problem before it worsens.

Some medication to quit smoking so that one can just dislike to smoke a cigarette and or ganja/ charts.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs/ weed, avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40 31st May is “World No Tobacco Day” Quitting smoking before the age of 40 is associated with larger decline in premature death than stopping it at a later date. Best age therefore to stop smoking is before 40. However, stopping smoking even after the age of 50 is still associated with lower risk of death as compared to those who continue to smoke. Even in smokers aged 80 years or more, quitting smoking appears to reduce some mortality.

Dear Lybrate user, you are under going Grief, which is a natural response to loss-Losing someone or something you love or care deeply about is very painful. You may experience all kinds of difficult emotions and it may feel like the pain and sadness you're experiencing will never let up. Most important factor in healing from loss is having the support of other people. Even if you aren’t comfortable talking about your feelings under normal circumstances, it’s important to express them when you’re grieving. Sharing your loss makes the burden of grief easier to carry. Wherever the support comes from, accept it and do not grieve alone. Connecting to others will help you heal. Turn to friends and family members /Draw comfort from your faith /Join a support group/Talk to a therapist or a counselor. Good luck.

Hi, yesterday night I was having severe headache and it felt like I had a loss of balance. Before this in the evening, I had an argument with my boyfriend and was really upset. Also, I only had some donuts and maggie noodles for the whole day which was unusual. The headache went away in the morning after sleeping.I also have this numbness in both of my legs almost daily mostly after taking meals. I also have some issues with managing my anger. Can you please tell what could be the problem and if I need to worry?

Post Graduate Diploma In Rehabilitation Psychology, M A Clinical Psychology

Hi, What is your age? How is your sleep & appetite? Do you have any other health issue? Kindly give above information so that we can identify if there is anything to worry. There can be multiple causes for headache, may be you were stressed back then that gave you a "tension headache" or you have not been eating enough which can be another cause for feeling weak and low on energy. Secondly if anger is taking a troll on you, I can help you in dealing with your anger. Come back with answers. ALL THE BEST!!

Look you have abused many substances known to produce dependence. If you have anxiety do not self medicate by these drugs as these may harm you, better take professional advise from a psychiatrist for deaddiction and control of your anxiety symptoms.

You need to consult the doctor who prescribed the medicines and also understand that only medicines cant cure mental diseases there is lot between cup and lips. This is all stress and worries of life. May be issues of married life, she may be having insecurities and fear. Just relax. Ask herself what bothers her. Have a positive self-talk, and learn what are those things she doesn't like. She needs to accept herself and move on. Also she needs to take care of her lifestyle and learn to be happy. If she cant do it herself, meet a life coach/ stress management super-specialist like me. Once she opens her heart out, she will feel free and begin to fly in life. I assure you that I can manage this and help u. Want to meet/speak to connect me.

She must have missed, and is probably missing her husband, a great deal. Then she may have relied on you children. But after marriage she thinks that your devotion to your spouses means that she is no longer important to all of you. May be a bit of old school thinking! you will need to make her feel wanted and important even if you are all married. Her illnesses are her way of getting your attention. Knowing this you must give her a lot of attention for healthy reasons and assure her of your love always. Now to practically solve this problem you must visit her on a long trip and stay with her and make a lot of fuss over her, and very smartly invite a counselor over to the house. Let that person handle the situation after you have briefed the individual about her background. While she wants your attention she may play games around it and complain because she is missing all of you and her husband. So keeping this in mind be soft, caring, and loving with her. If you are all in the same town or nearby, make it a point that one of you are always there in turns so that she will not feel lonely. Then over a period of time just take her back with you to each house so that she has a variety of experiences of your love in a variety of homes and she will gradually get better. Any way your counselor will advise you further.

Firstly, you need to consult a gynac and et your polycystic ovaries sorted. There's definitely a treatment for that. Next, you must start workouts and healthy nutrition/diet so that you can be in a better shape. Third, you need to self-educate yourself that criticisms are not etched on your forehead. They're merely an opinion of others-you don't have to necessarily buy it! You can hear them but not "listen" to them. You are your best judge; nobody else so it shouldn't matter what others say. Stop being in this helpless situation which you have created for yourself- work on your weak spots and become a strong girl! If you eat healthy, lose weight, groom well and carry yourself confidently; what makes you say you won't find a suitable man?

Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

Dear Lybrate user, At your age, Memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Take care.

It looks like she is smarting after the breakup. I think that you should move on rather quickly and for that you need to take some measures. You must deal with all your feelings you had around her and clear it out of your system. Remove all the gifts, reminders of her, and give it away or destroy them. Avoid places, situations, companions, and occasions that you two used to frequent, at least for some time. Meet a lot with other friends whom you might have neglected all these months and renew the contacts all over again. Please do not bad mouth her to anyone and just say that we broke up for some good reasons and you are okay with that. Start an exercise regimen and get on with your studies, and career building, with a renewed vigor. Do not get into another relationship as yet, and if the feelings for this girl continue to haunt you, please meet with a counselor and share them with that person. In time this will all be history and you will be happy you moved on.

I can feel how stressed you are. I think, it is better for you to distract yourself by focussing your mind on your children and learning new skills to earn money in your home itself. A time will come for your husband realise his mistakes. And, in course of time the emotional bond between children and your husband will increase. At least, if you think you have lost your husband, your children have their father. Let s hope for the best" it is not what you have lost but what you have left that counts"

5 Ways to Fight Depression If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1.Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2.Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3.Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5. Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications or prescription for medicines consult me on this site to ask me directly and not in open questions session It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all.

As an young adult having these thoughts and emotions can be quite normal unless it is not disturbing either of the partner. These feelings usually settle down within months. But if you feel distressed of these or your partner doesn't feel comfortable then try to divert your attention towards other like exercises and yoga.
