How To Cope With Loneliness At Old Age?

Elderly people are usually prone to social isolation which can take a toll on their health. With physical inability or limitations to move around, socializing also gets limited and loneliness comes into your life. Thus, a major section of the senior population tends to have psychological issues as well which may be caused due to the loss of company and lesser interaction as well as a generation gap in trying to deal with younger people. If you are finding it hard to cope with loneliness, here are a few initiatives worth giving a try:

  1. Meet New People: Try giving an effort into meeting new people and enjoying their companionship. With time, few of these relationships might culminate into deep friendship. You can always turn to these people for emotional support as well as keeping company.

  2. Community Volunteering: Volunteer your time engaging yourself in local community activities and social events. Also try and get into interest groups where you can find people who have common interests as yours.

  3. Get back to your long lost hobbies: Re-kindle your long-lost zeal by adopting or getting back to hobbies you truly love, for instance, art and craft, gardening, sewing, playing an instrument, reading and writing, puzzles and writing to pen pals.

  4. Get a pet: Pets can add a new meaning to your life through their unconditional love. There is no greater joy than the joy of bringing up a pet. Ensure how don’t have allergy problems and will be able to keep up with the readily requirements of pets.

  5. Reminisce your good old days: Recollection would enhance your emotional health and will less likely make you feel withdrawn.

  6. Invite people over: In case you are home-bound, coming across people each day would be difficult. In that case invite your mates over tea or keep in touch with them through phone or internet. The internet is also a great resource to keep yourself occupied and to find hobbies that you can get into.

  7. Keep depression at bay: Loneliness can often make you fall prey to depression. Keep a check on any sign of physical or mental deterioration such as the feeling of despair and sadness, sleep-troubles, suicidal thoughts, unwillingness to take decisions, apathy and appetite loss.

  8. Help others: Use your acquired experiences and knowledge of your life-time in helping people out. Teach as well as learn something new each day.

  9. Write it down: Maintain a personal journal to pen down the things you are looking forward to or devise a plan for the forthcoming week.

  10. Take initiative: Do not wait for others to call on you. Instead travel by yourself to visit them. Seize every chance to initiate a conversation and smile even if life seems hard so that people are automatically attracted to you.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

How To Manage Endometriosis?

FICMCH, Diploma In Laproscopic Surgery, Certified in Laparoscopy & Hysteroscopy, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), MBBS
Gynaecologist, Gurgaon
How To Manage Endometriosis?

When tissues that usually grow inside the uterus, start growing outside the organ, it is called endometriosis. Painful periods, pain during sex, pain while urinating or bowel movements, extreme bleeding, fatigue, infertility, diarrhea, bloating and nausea are some of the symptoms of endometriosis.

Treating endometriosis usually depends on the following factors

  1. Age
  2. Severity of symptoms
  3. Severity of the disease
  4. Future plans for children

Depending on these the doctor might opt for any of the following treatments

  1. Medication for Pain: If the symptoms are mild, then the doctor will prescribe some pain killers like Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  2. Hormone Therapy: Hormone therapy is effective, but once you stop them, your symptoms may come back. Some of the hormone therapies include:
    • Hormonal Contraceptives: Birth control pills, vaginal rings and patches are useful in controlling the hormones that are responsible for tissue build-up outside the uterine cavity.
    • Medroxyprogesterone: This drug stops menstruation, which in turn stops the tissue build-up and put an end to all the symptoms. But on the other hand, gaining weight, low bone production and depression are some of the common effects of this drug.
    • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) antagonists and agonists: Hormones that stimulate ovaries are blocked by these. They bring down oestrogen levels and hence prevent menstruation.
    • Danazol: This drug prevents menstruation and symptoms of endometriosis by blocking the hormones that stimulate the ovaries. However, Danazol may not be a favourable option because of its side effects. The drug should be avoided during pregnancy.
  3. Conservative Surgery: If you are trying to get pregnant, but you already suffer from endometriosis, then removing endometriosis surgically is a viable solution. Your uterus and ovaries will be preserved, which might increase your chances of becoming pregnant. Even suffering from severe pain might find relief from conservative surgery.
  4. Hysterectomy: In extreme cases, the only way to deal with the symptoms is to completely remove the uterus, ovaries and cervix. Since a hysterectomy means you cannot have children, it is kept as the last option for women in their reproductive age. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

Loss of Libido - Tips To Revive It!

Loss of Libido - Tips To Revive It!

Your fantasies might have taken a backseat for the time being or might have remained silenced for more than a while. The other processes of your usual life go on perfectly except for a few changes that you either consider as minute or you attribute them to any cause other than lowered libido (interest in sex).

Loss of libido can create hurdles in a man as well as a woman's life and thus should be corrected at the earliest possible. Even if you don't care much about an impaired sex life, libido loss can affect your overall health that can prove to be harmful in the long run.

Some may say that it’s all in the mind. Yes, but to a certain extent only.  Considering the following causes, you would agree that it is not always in the mind that one loses interest in sex.

The common causes of decreased libido can be listed as below:

  1. While in males, testosterone levels may sharply drop due to aging, in females the estrogen levels may drop after surgeries pertaining to the vaginal tract, after menopause or after childbirth and subsequent breast- feeding.

  2. Exhaustion from prolonged office work or extensive travelling.

  3. An instance of sexual abuse in the past can result in lowered libido.

  4. A lousy lifestyle where you either smoke or drink regularly can prevent you from experiencing sexual desires.

  5. Irregular sleep patterns can be a contributing factor as well.

  6. Illnesses like cancer, diabetes and neurological disorders can hamper your sex drive.

Ways to deal with your libido loss:

  1. Make significant efforts to change your lifestyle. If you have an erratic lifestyle, sexual dysfunction is almost inevitable. You need to follow a routine to prohibit your libido from deterioration.

  2. Meditate and/or workout daily.  Indulge in brisk walk, jogging, yoga, light exercises, swimming, play games like, badminton, table tennis, squash, etc.  Over a period of time, it can restore your interest in sexual activities.

  3. Try and reduce the stress level from your life.  Spend quality time together and with family. Take time out for a movie, an event, a long drive, or a vacation.  Share your day’s activities with each other.

  4. Eat lots of vegetables and fruits. Cut down on drinking and smoking and gradually give them up completely.

  5. Take at least 8 hours of sleep so as to wake up latest by 6:00 in the morning.

  6. A counseling by a good sexologist can help to a great extent in overcoming this problem. A major part of my treatment for libido loss consists of Counselling. Many of my patients are now happy to revive their sexual life through my treatment. One can consult me in private if they want to say goodbye to Loss of Libido.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Pune
Incorporating healthy foods in the diet is not enough. One should understand factors affecting the absorption of nutrients from the food. Some factors are responsible for increased absorption of particular nutrient whereas some decreases its absorption. Calcium is the hardest mineral to get absorbed in the body. 30-80 % of the dietary calcium is not getting absorbed in the adult body.

Factors increasing absorption of calcium:
1. Vitamin d: vitamin d works in the digestive tract to absorb calcium into the blood stream from the walls of the duodenum. Vitamin d also helps maintain normal blood calcium level.

2. Parathyroid hormone: it increases calcium transport across the membrane of intestinal cells.

3. Acid environment: hydrochloric acid secreted in the stomach during the process of digestion is required for the absorption of calcium in the duodenum. Calcium supplements could be taken with magnesium at bedtime or between meals due to the acid environment needed in the stomach to assimilate the calcium. Always consult a physician before beginning a new supplement regimen.

4. Milk lactose: it favors absorption in infants. Lactose is acted upon by intestinal microbial flora to form acid which causes lowering of ph which makes calcium more soluble.

5. Amino acids: supplemental calcium is often chelated, or combined with protein molecules called amino acids, to help the body absorb them during digestion. Lysine and arginine increase calcium absorption.

6. Exercise: exercise along with vitamin d intake helps calcium absorption thereby making bones strong.

Factors decreasing absorption of calcium:
1. Oxalic acid& phytic acid: foods that are high in oxalic acid such as spinach, chard and chocolate, reduce calcium absorption. Oxalic acid binds with the calcium to form a salt crystal, calcium oxalate which cannot be absorbed. Phytic acid, which is found in whole-grain foods and high-fibre foods, effects calcium absorption the same way.

2. Phosphorus: too much phosphorus in the diet causes precipitation of calcium in the form of calcium phosphate.

3. Stress: stress can have a negative effect on hcl production in the stomach and on normal digestive behaviour in the body, and can therefore have a negative effect on calcium absorption.

4. Caffeine, drugs like anticoagulants, cortisone and thyroxine reduce calcium absorption.

5. Lack of exercise and vitamin d deficiency leads to decrease calcium absorption.
