My mother in law is 80. She has recently been operated for breast cancer her breast is removed. Drs have suggested chemo therapy but she is undergoing homeopathy treatment. Is it ok?

MS - General Surgery
Oncologist, Ludhiana
If she is not fit for chemotherapy then hormone treatment can be considered at this age. Hormone treatment is safe and without any major side effect. Hormone treatment is effective only if er and pgr are positive.

I am 21 year old and I have Breast problem, my Breast size is different, left size is small and right side is big, and a big size always paining what can I do for this.

General Surgeon, Delhi
Hello lybrate-user, thanks for your query, pain in breast at your age is common so please do not worry too much, you may try to change the size and type of your undergarments which better suit your body type. As of the size difference if it is noticeable than you may consult a plastic surgeon who will guide you through various options available.

My wife recently had a very bad breast infection in her left breast. At first we were very tensed thinking it might be breast cancer. She was in a lot of pain. The cancer was ruled out after doing sonography and mammography. But we are still worried. My question is what are the causes of such infections and how can these be avoided. Also what are the symptoms for breast cancer?

Was she feeding her baby ? Most common cause of breast infection is breast abcess due to collection of extra milk , reason women are told to extract extra milk and store it in fridge. Other reasons are Diabetes , Bad Hygiene. You have got tested for cancer , get it repeated after 1 year by ultrasound which is equally correct to look for swellings and like mammography does not carry radiation risk.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Laryngeal Cancer

Ayurvedic Remedies for Laryngeal Cancer

The formation of malignant cells in the larynx tissues leads to laryngeal cancer. Most tissue malignancy occur in the squamous cells (flat, thin cells inside the larynx lining). Men are more susceptible to laryngeal cancer than women.

Laryngeal cancer falls under the category of neck cancer and head cancer. The risk factors of laryngeal cancer include:

  1. Using tobacco based products
  2. Drinking excessive alcohol
  3. Exposure to asbestos and sulphuric acid

The symptoms of laryngeal cancer are:

  1. Coughing or sore throat that does not heal (know more about Whooping Cough)
  2. Difficulty in swallowing
  3. Pain in the ears
  4. Throat or neck lumps
  5. Hoarseness in the voice

The conventional treatments for laryngeal cancer are radiation, chemotherapy and surgery.

Ayurvedic treatment can be used together with conventional therapies. Ayurvedic remedies have minimal side-effects and as such are safe. Usually, conventional therapies weaken the body. Fatigue is a common side-effect of harsh treatments like radiation and chemotherapy. As such, Ayurveda aims to bring the body back to balance by fighting the effects of harsh treatments that cause imbalances in the body. It hopes to achieve harmony through natural methods. It can increase energy, promote wellbeing, balance the body, mind and spirit, reduce stress and prevent the disease from returning.

Eating certain healthy food, herbs and professionally prescribed Ayurvedic remedies can help with cancer treatment. Besides healing your body from the inside, there are other important beneficial remedies that can prove to be useful. They include:

  1. Meditation can reduce blood pressure, anxiety and improve all around well-being.
  2. Yoga and pranayama is supremely helpful
  3. Oil massages with healing herbs and essential oils are good for the body and mind

Cancer treatment requires time and patience. You cannot hasten the process. If you are recovered or you are in the recovery phase, it is important not to fall back to the bad habits that put your body out of balance. So if you are on treatment, or done with the treatment, do not start smoking or drinking again. smoking and drinking harms the good effects and can lead to recurrence of the disease.

I am an 18 year old girl and I had unprotected sex 10/3/16. It's been 3 days and I am experiencing red patches on my breast and hands along with frequent urination trips. What should I do? Am I pregnant? Is Mifeprin advisable?

Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS, MD - Community Medicine
Gynaecologist, Lucknow
Hello the patches are not due to sex, it may be some allergic reaction. Take medicine and get a urine test done to rule out infection.

She has diagnosed of breast cancer going through chemo for the first time after chemo she got lung infection and after 18 days got infection of herpes that caused delay in the second chemotherapy please recommend some diet as per her condition we are giving her wheatgrass guide soya milk and a type of kadha made by the leaves of ramphal along with medicines. Also describe why she got infected again an again.

MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Patan
As she has been started on chemotherapy, her immunity will come down. Means her body's power to fight against infection is down thats why she is getting recurrent infection. But no need to worry, just give her nutritious food and treat the infections accordingly.

MBBS, DNB (Surgical Oncology)

For stage 2 uterine cancer the treatment of choice is surgery and based on the final report further radiation maybe required. Whereas for cervical cancer if it is early stage surgery is required and in stage II B onwards chemoradiation is the treatment of choice.
