To control & maintain BP normal these are best methods to follow:.• Do physical exercise like jogging, running or brisk walk for atleast 20-30 minutes. • Maintain your cholesterol level to normal & eat least amount of butter, cream or fatty things. • Eat less amount of pickle, salt and fast food as they contain high sodium levels. • Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking. • Take less amount of caffine containing coffee, tea or cold drinks because caffine causes increase BP. • Drink 8 to 10 glass of water daily • Take 6 to 8 hrs of sleep daily. Do not take too much stress. • Do long breathing pranayams (Anulom- Vilom, Bhramari) daily for 10 - 15 minutes. Because you sleep in the day time your sleep in the night gets affected. Make a habit to not sleep in the day time. Go to bed at definite time at night. Do some yoga daily before going to bed at night.

I am 16 years old. I am suffering from urticaria related disease. Skin swells and becomes red after applying pressure. My doctor consulted and said its something like hives. Taking medicines since two months.. Now totally tired. Still not cured. What should I do?

LCPS, BAM&S
General Physician, Pune
Urticaria or commonly called allergic rash is troublesome many times. The causes are complex. You never know what causes allergy. Food and drugs are the main culprits. But rarely presence of worms also can cause allergy. The psycho-somatic angle also needs to be ruled out. Too much anxiety is also responsible in some cases. Best thing is to see a good skin specialist first. And then a holistic expert. Solutions are not simple and cannot be doled out on this platform. Getting a good physician is the first important step.

Hi, there are so many treatment options for acne depending upon your skin type. You can apply clindamycin gel on your face twice daily. Use salicylic acid containing face wash twice a day. Use a non comedogenic sunscreen regulatly. You can go for tretinoin or benzoyl peroxide gels at night with doctors advice. Chemical peels containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids will be helpful. Avoid oily/ junk food, drink plenty of water daily and also avoid hair oil application. Hope that helps.

I ve diabetic retinopathy is their any other medication than laser. Please tell me.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

I ve diabetic retinopathy is their any other medication than laser. Please tell me.
Lybrate-user, laser is used when there is proliferative retinopathy and bleeding (pre- retinal, or vitreal). Because those newly generated vessels which bleed have to be burned. Once that is done, if needed other treatments also can be used like intra vitreal injections. The treating ophthalmologist is the best judge for treatment choice. It better to follow that, as this is a sight threatening condition. Thanks for the question.

Munching foods like apples, pears, carrots or celery after brushing can help in preventing discoloration as they trigger tooth-bathing saliva which helps in keeping the teeth whiter.

13 Important do’s and don’ts to avoid health hazards caused by floods

The Chennai floods this season have broken all records. The city has not been hit with a rainstorm of this degree in about 100 years. The entire city is reeling under the effects of this flood, with many becoming victims of diseases and injuries as a result.

Floods in your city can increase the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, Hepatitis A etc. Not only that, the transmission of vector borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya increases as well. Severe flooding can even lead to accidents such as electric shocks. However, there are certain precautions you can take to avoid these potential health hazards.

1. Avoid flood waters as these may have been contaminated with sewage and remains of animals
2. Boil water before consuming it or using it to cook food
3. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before eating, and drinking and always use a disinfecting soap
4. Avoid water coming from wells until it has been treated
5. Throw away food that has come in contact with flood water, whether it was refrigerated or not
6. Throw away food that has been standing at room temperature for more than two hours or smells foul or has changed colour and texture
7. Make sure you cover and treat any open cuts or wounds
8. Bathe regularly
9. Make sure you use mosquito repellents at home and on your clothing and skin
10. Don’t touch open wire or sockets or let them come in contact with water as it can cause shocks
11. Don’t allow your pets to go outside as they can become hosts of vector borne diseases
12. Throw away accumulated garbage and debris as they can turn into a breeding ground for rats and mosquitoes
13. Make full use of vaccination facilities

By adopting these simple measures, you can safely avoid the most common types of health hazards prevalent during floods.

Hello sir/madam. My age is 21 years and I am very thick. I want to lose my weight, for that reason I want my regular diet chart to control.

B.Sc. - Dietitics / Nutrition, Nutrition Certification,Registered Dietitian
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Delhi
Hello sir/madam. My age is 21 years and I am very thick. I want to lose my weight, for that reason I want my regular ...
Don’t worry. You can lose weight easily if you are patient and determined to shed those extra kilos. You just have to alter your daily routine, watch what you eat and be physically active. This requires you to be on your weight loss commitment for quiet long. As soon as you start seeing the results, you will be surprised as well as motivated to go beyond your weight loss and adopt and a lifelong healthy attitude. For a start please follow: 1. Watch what you eat – Are you eating too much junk, drink excessive alcohol and eating too much white food and sugar? Please cut it down to as low as you can from tomorrow. Cut down tea/coffee if you are too addicted to it. It is creating havoc inside your body. 2. Lifestyle – Are you a late sleeper and late riser? You can’t imagine what this schedule of yours is doing to your metabolism. It is degrading your digestive system from inside and your looks from outside. 3. Physically active – If you are a couch potato who loves to watch tv whole day then throw that couch of yours in the street and get yourself a treadmill tomorrow. Yes it is as simple as that. Who is stopping you? You have to be physically active all day long if you want to burn those extra calories. Do daily brisk walk, Pranayam, atleast 20 surayanamaskar everyday to start seeing the results. Take break between office work to walk a little or rather just climb some stairs to get that food you ate in lunch have space and heat to digest and absorb. What’s the harm in using your washroom to do a little middle of the day squats. Do that – No one is watching you. The key is to stay physically active all day long, no matter what. 4. Eat healthy and eat on time: Not only eating healthy is important but eating at right time is equally imp too. Have an early breakfast and early dinner and have 4 small meals between breakfast and dinner. To guide you a bit, here you go: A. Breakfast (Between 8-10 a. M) – Have oats/porridge or brown bread with milk and nuts. B. At 11 a. M - Cup of Green Tea c. Mid day meal (around 12 p. M) – Have a bowl of fruits. Citrus fruits are best taken during this hour and absorb well in the body. Have oranges, amla, pineapple etc during this hour. D. Lunch (between 2-3 p. M) – Daal, roti, mix veg, buttermilk and salad. You can also take brown rice with daal in lunch. Try to get your food cooked in olive oil. Lace your salad with apple cider vinegar, black pepper and seeds like flaxseeds or chia seeds to make it nutrition packed lunch. E. Between 4 p. M – 5 p. M – Cup of Green Tea F. Evening (4-6 p. M) – Have some nice sprouts with tomatoes and cucumber. G. Dinner (2 hours before sleeping, preferably before 9 p. M) – Paneer & veggies salad with olive oil, Roti or brown rice with Daal. H. Have a glass of warm milk. Weight loss is 80% about what you eat and 20% about exercises. That said, both the things go hand in hand. If you want to lose weight in a more healthy way than be patient and just follow the regimen everyday. Slow and steady wins the race.
