Hello. First of all you should understand that drinking too much water will not cause any stress on kidneys until unless they are not functioning. So drink adequate water. In winters problem of frequent urination increases as water is not evaporated from body. Second cause may be a urine infection but since there is no burning its unlikely. No nothing to worry. Drink adequate water. Eat proper meals. Everything is ok with you.

Ultra sound scan report shows a calculus at mid pile of left kidney measuring 4.2 mm. Suggested medicine is contiflo. What should we do? Is this medicine used or not?

General Surgeon, Srinagar
Ultra sound scan report shows a calculus at mid pile of left kidney measuring 4.2 mm. Suggested medicine is contiflo....
Well. Contiflo contains tamsulosin an alpha blocker. It is used routinely for benign hyperplasia of prostate. It has a role in lower ureteric stones and ureterovesical junction stones as it helps to evacuate them. However in a kidney stone it does not have much role. Your stone size is very small. Take lots of fluids and exercise. You can try cystone tabs. However I don't think contiflo has much role in kidney stones as such. Regards.

All these symptom shows that 'Pitta' of your body got disturbed. So, take care of few things. Avoid: Sour food ( lemon, soar grapes , tamarind etc. ) , Spicy food. Include: Take a glass of fennel seed water ( soak 1 spoon fennel in a glass of water at night, heat it once , cool down and consume as first thing in the morning. Also chew 1 spoon fennel seeds after every meal. Don't leave yourself empty stomach , take freshly home prepared food or snacks in every 2 to 3 hours. About 10 am ,( after breakfast) take 1 glass milk with 1.5 spoon Gulkand mixed with 1 spoon fennel seeds. It will release all the extra heat from your body . Always drink water or some hydrating drink like coconut water before step out in sun.

You should follow these very important and simple things to prevent stone formation & to get sure treatment of kidney stones: 1. First take a lot of fluid daily. The more you drink water and fluid, the less amount of deposit accumulate in kidney. So you have to make your kidneys healthy just only by drinking 2-3 liters (10-12 glasses) of water. 2. Stones are mainly formed of calcium and oxalate. So take very low quantity of milk, cheese, cream and dairy products. 3. Do not take strawberry, plum, spinach and tomatoes. These fruits and vegetables are rich in oxalate. So avoid them to prevent from kidney stones. 3. Stop taking supplementary vitamin d and calcium medication. 4. Avoid animal protein diet- eggs, red meat, fish in diet. 5. Take less amount of salt, pickle and western foods. They have high amount of sodium. So avoid it. 6. Urinary infection are also one of the cause of stone. So take proper antibiotic treatment of urinary infection on time. Even when you feelburning sensation or pain during urination, don't avoid it. Take medication as soon as possible. I hope you follow them in your life andstay healthy. 7. You can take gokshur tablets of himalaya for 3 months. It definitely get relief from kidney stones.

Kidney Stones - 5 Ways You Can Prevent them!

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS, MBBS
Urologist, Delhi
Kidney Stones - 5 Ways You Can Prevent them!

The pair of kidneys that human beings have, forms an important part in the excretory system. They perform specific and important functions. They excrete urine as well as help in eliminating the toxins, which accumulate in the body. Kidney stones occur when the minerals present in the urine without being discharged, keep on accumulating. This gives rise to an extremely painful and uncomfortable situation. Though sometimes the situation gets revoked all by itself, many-a-times it requires medical intervention.

Some of the symptoms of kidney stones are

  1. Excruciating pain in the back
  2. Pain while urinating
  3. Tendency to vomit
  4. Dizziness
  5. Fever

However, there are several preventive measures which you can undertake in order to avert the situation. Some of them are:

  1. Drink lots of water: Kidney stone is one of those rare conditions that once occurred, always carry the latent threat of recurring again. Therefore, drinking water in large quantities becomes essential. The more you drink water, the more frequently you would urinate, thereby curbing the chances of the minerals settling in the kidneys.
  2. Avoid certain foods: Food like beets, spinach, those which are replete with calcium oxalate should be avoided in order to minimize chances of having kidney stones.
  3. Foods recommended:
    • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables
    • Drink plenty of water ( 10 -12 glasses of water)
    • Dietary calcium of 1gm a day
    • Low oxalate diet Foods to be restricted
    • Reduce the amount of salt in your diet
    • Restrict food containing excess of oxalate
    • Limit intake of animal proteins
  4. Change your diet: If you are trying to avoid the eventuality of developing kidney stones, it is imperative that you change your diet a bit. It is recommended that you exclude animal protein as much as possible and assiduously avoid the intake of salt as much as possible.
  5. Take less calcium supplements: Calcium generally is considered a nemesis to your kidneys and is prescribed by doctors to be avoided. However, recent research has thwarted this claim. Calcium does not pose a threat to kidneys. However, calcium supplements definitely do and therefore, should be avoided. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an urologist.
