Causes and Symptoms of Silicosis

MD PULMONARY, DTCD
Pulmonologist, Faridabad
Causes and Symptoms of Silicosis

Silicosis is a lung disorder that develops as a result of exposure to dust, which has silica (chemical compounds) content. Silicosis significantly makes you prone to other serious health disorders. It is an incurable disorder and a prescribed dosage of medications in the form of cough syrups or antibiotics can help in the regulation of the symptoms. Inhalers are also useful to clear the blocked air passages. In extreme cases, the doctors might suggest a transplant of the lung to eradicate silicosis.

Causes: Silicosis is caused primarily due to a long- term exposure (usually 5-15 years) to silica. But a short-term exposure (for a few weeks or months) can also result in silicosis, which tends to worsen considerably as time progresses, if not diagnosed in its early stages. Silica is a natural dust particle, which is found in abundance in rocks, sand, bricks or concrete. Once silica gets into your body through inhalation, these particles tend to damage the tissues of the lungs by inflicting minor incisions. This considerably disfigures the lungs, thereby making the whole process of breathing rather troublesome. Long-term exposure to silica might further lead to lung cancer. People who work in mines, glass or asphalt manufacturing industries, iron and steel industries and construction sites are at increased risks of developing this condition.

Symptoms: The Symptoms of Silicosis begin mildly, but tend to worsen with time. The symptoms of Silicosis are as follows:

  • The initial symptoms include severe weariness, repeated instances of coughing and experiencing trouble while breathing. These symptoms usually recur as time progresses.
  • In the latter stages of silicosis, the symptoms gradually worsen accompanied by severe pain in the chest along with fever, night sweat and sudden loss of body weight.

Silicosis might make you susceptible to other infections related to the respiratory systems such as tuberculosis.

Prevention: In order to prevent Silicosis, you should wear suitable protective gear and a respirator on your face while working in a place which has risks of silica exposure. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

What medications are best for the treatment of asthma? what are their side effects?

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Faridabad
No doubt ayurveda provides you the bestest treatment for asthma. If ayurvedic herbs are used properly in a proper dose, there is no negative effect on the body. A good diet is an important part of your overall asthma treatment plan. Just like regular exercise, a healthy diet is good for everyone. That goes for people with asthma too. According to ayurveda, the asthma of recent origin can be treated effectively but if it becomes chronic, it can only be managed. It is not the drug alone that can give relief from asthma but regulation of diet and the change of conceptual thinking can also play a great role. Along with proper ayurvedic medication and control over eating and living, asthmatics can get better and quick results. During an acute attack, a hot chest and shoulder pack, repeatedly given every half an hour, will have a sedative effect upon the nerves and a relaxing influence generally, giving the quickest and most satisfactory relief. Hot milk or hot water when sipped little by little, provides immediate relief from the attack. The inhalation of steam-laden air may be provided by using an ordinary teakettle, attaching a funnel to the spout, and inhaling from the upper wide end of the cone. Mustard oil (sarason) is a good remedy. Take a spoonful with jaggery, twice a day. Only the use of pippalee (piper longum) powder along with pure honey, makes an attack of asthma subside. There are thousand s of remedy. Go for a proper ayurveda treatment as early as possible.

I had an asthma attack last week. Since I m asthmatic and weather changed I took anti allergy tablets. But the attack got changed into intense cold and cough. The cough was continuous so I started taking an expectorant. Now its a week, coughing has reduced but fever is on and off. And croaking cough is also there with sneezing. Also my eyes are burning. Please help.

General Physician, Warangal
If there is runny nose with itching burning and continous watering through eyes then use nasal decongestant drops or sprays for immediate relief. Fever can be managed with antipyretics but if it continuous even after1week then go for mp and widal tests.

About carrots: I like eating carrots but when I eat them I feel like lot of heat is releasing from body. What to do. I want to get the benefits of carrot!

M.B.S.(HOMEO), MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Visakhapatnam
Although you may be eating too many carrots if your skin has yellowed or you have loose stools, other foods can contribute to both of these problems. A diet rich in tomatoes, winter squash or sweet potatoes can cause carotenemia, just as eating more whole grains, dried beans and dried fruit can temporarily loosen stools. The centers for disease control and prevention advises most women to consume 2.5 to 3 cups of vegetables a day, and most men to eat 3 to 4 cups a day. It takes just six baby carrots to make a 1/2-cup serving.

My friend suffering dust allergy for ten years, What are good Treatment options? How effective is each treatment option? What are the benefits versus risks of each treatment option?

MBBS
General Physician, Cuttack
1. Dust allergy could be because of so many agents (it could be due to pollen, mite, feathers, dander, mold, droppings of birds, pet hair/feather/fur cockroach etc) 2. I advise you to do an allergy test after consulting an allergy specialist/immunologist to find out the agent which is causing dust allergy. 3. Follow the advice and treatment given by allergy specialist/immunologist. Treatment 1. Anti histamine like levo cetrizine 1 tablet at bed time 2. Decongestant steroidal nasal dropspray like rhino cort nasal spray one spray to each nostril three times daily, 3. Remove wall to wall carpet in bed room, 4. Keep pets out of bed room/house 5. Minimise house hold humidity 6. Keep home clean, ensure good ventilation, vacum cleaning of carpet, furniture, drapperies, wash bed linen frequently in hot water, instal a/c, 7. I am suffering from cough problem due to dust & ash where I am working what should I do for get relief from it.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Dear lybrate user, dust allergy occurs due to the production of histamine in blood. This production of histamine is provoked by the entry of certain foreign substance in our respiratory system through the air we inhale. However if you are suffering from dust allergy from a considerable prolonged time then you should take the following medications:- 1) 5 drops of homoeopathic pyrogen 1000, thrice daily in empty stomach. 2) 30 drops of homoeopathic mother tincture cassia soph q, thrice daily, after meals, in a glass of water.

I have dust allergy. It cause runny nose. It sometimes cause breathlessness me. Please suggest me great medicine for controlling my problem.

BHMS
Homeopath, Chennai
In Allopathy, anti-histaminics or immunosuppressant medicines like steroids are used which only give temporary relief, with the problem returning once the medicine is stopped. On the other hand, during Homeopathy treatment of allergy is cured by strengthening the immune system and the symptoms subside on their own. At the same time, it needs to be understood that this is purely natural allergy treatment. No steroids or anti allergic medicines are used. The immunity is strengthened by Homeopathy instead of being suppressed as happens with allopathic treatment. You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance.
