My daughter has two bad teeth and she is experiencing pain from the past couple of days. The dentist suggested root canal for both the teeth. Is it required to go for root canal for a four year old kid? These teeth will eventually fall out. Are there any alternatives? How will the permanent teeth get affected with the proposed treatment?

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Hi! yes , if she is having pain then it is advisable to get her root canal treatment done. Removing the tooth is not advisable. Permanent teeth will not get affected.

Get cleaning n polishing done every 6-7months by dentist you won't have problem of bad breath coz calculus n plaque deposited over you teeth n gums gives bad smell which can't be clean with brushing.

I brush daily but when I drink water I feel vary cold in teeth and smell come from the mouth please help me.
•Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid eating strongly flavoured or spicy food. •Cut down on sugary food and drink, as it can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth. •Reduce your alcohol consumption. •Stop smoking. •Cut down on coffee. •Drink plenty of water to help prevent your mouth becoming dry. •Chew sugar-free gum after eating, to stimulate the flow of saliva. This will help clean away any remaining food particles. •Don't use toothpaste to clean your dentures, as it can scratch the surface and cause stains. •Clean your dentures thoroughly using soap and lukewarm water, denture cream or a denture-cleaning tablet. •Use a separate toothbrush to clean your dentures. •Make sure you visit your dentist for regular check-ups. Having regular dental check-ups will ensure that any plaque is removed from your teeth, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. •Your dentist can recommend the best way to clean your teeth and gums, and point out areas you might be missing. They can also identify any signs of gum disease and ensure early treatment. •Gastritis, lung & sinus infection may also be the cause of bad smell in the mouth. 90% of bad breath is due to a dirty tongue. •If your bad breath is caused by a gastrointestinal problem, such as an H. Pylori infection or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), you may be referred to a gastroenterologist. •Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. •You may need deep cleaning & fill tooth cavities with artificial enamel filling. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash until then. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person.

MDS Prosthodontics, BDS
Dentist,
It's called gingival abscess or periodontal abscess check the reason for that it may due to food impaction or tooth decay. If food impaction clean that area and apply ointment. If decay treat that tooth by root canal treatment.

Any dental cavity needs a filling to prevent total damage. The dentist will take a radiograph and decide if a filling can be done or the tooth needs root canal treatment. Filling closes the gap, so you will not have food lodgement problem too.

For immediate pain relief take tab. Ketanov 2-3 times a day after food. From your description, sound like you may have chipped or broken a tooth. Consult with a dentist to make sure there is no problem.

Hi. I'm 24 yrs old. My gums are bleeding. I'm worried that it will lead to bad breath. Please help.

BDS
Dentist, Bangalore
I think you have developed gingivitis(bleeding gums) which causes bleeding. Get scaling (cleaning)done which might reduce your bleeding to some extent and this will also help you in reducing bad breath. Do flossing and use mouthwash.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. First and foremost, get your oral cavity clinically examined by a dentist, and then proceed for further specialist checkups (pulmonology & gastroenterology etc all) as advised by your physician. Again, it is in your best interest that you discontinue this habit of chewing 'Gutkha' at the earliest. Allergy apart, its constituents can be likely carcinogenic, regular use of which may increase risk of oral sub-mucosa fibrosis (OSMF), oral cancers as well as cancers of the liver, stomach, prostate and lung. Instead, I would advise you to streamline your diet, have a healthy & balanced diet preferably Mediterranean and maintain a good oral hygiene. Hope this helps. Do take care, and all the very best. Sincerely

Is it More Important to Brush Your Teeth in the Night Than in the Morning?

Why it's more important to brush your teeth in the night than in the morning

Most people wake up every morning and stumble to wash their teeth first thing. Do you believe that brushing your teeth in the morning is sufficient to keep your mouth healthy?

While it is important to brush your teeth in the morning for good oral hygiene, what goes on in your mouth all night is even more important. Brushing your teeth once a day is barely enough to maintain perfect oral hygiene. By brushing twice a day you can make the difference.

Do you know why it can be important to brush at night since you are only about to sleep?

Here are a few things that brushing before bed does.

1. Reduces acid build up

Everyone has acid being constantly produced in their mouths. The saliva secreted contains calcium which neutralizes the acid being built up. At night the saliva secretion slows down which allows the acids to get accumulated. The acids keep corroding the teeth all night. When you brush your teeth, the fluoride present in the toothpaste stimulates saliva secretion. So by brushing before bed you ensure that the saliva secretion does not fall drastically. In the process you prevent your teeth from getting corroded.

2. Reduces bacterial multiplication

The saliva in our mouth not only neutralizes the acid it reduces bacteria from multiplying as well. During the reduced saliva production, as you sleep, the bacteria in your mouth multiply manifold and attack your teeth and gums. This is why keeping your saliva secretion regular by brushing before bed is of utmost importance.

3. Reduces the decay of food particles

After you have your dinner just rinsing your mouth is not enough. Tiny food particles that get stuck in your teeth rot overnight. It is best to go to bed with a clean mouth rather than a mouth with tiny decaying food particles.

No matter how much of a task it might seem like, brushing at night is as important, if not more important, than brushing in the morning.

If the mouth ulcer is causing a lot of pain, gently rub a small ice cube over the spot or rinse your mouth with ice-cold water. You could also chew on a clove bud (lavang) and direct the juice generated to the area where the ulcer is located. Clove buds are a great ingredient to cure sore throat too. To prevent the ulcerated area from getting infected, make it a point to rinse your mouth with a little salt water. Remember, this won’t make the ulcer disappear, but it can help reduce the pain. Honey is a natural humectant. It helps reduce scarring and hastens the process of new tissue growth. This, along with its anti-microbial effect ensures faster healing of the mouth ulcer. Chew a few leaves of tulsi along with some water about three to four times every day. This will help in getting rid of ulcers faster and also have a preventive action against their recurrence. Applying a little coconut oil directly onto the mouth ulcer or chewing some coconut (fresh or dry) helps reduce pain and inflammation and hence, ulcers heal faster. Mix some sugar to crushed khus-khus seeds and consume this mixture for instant relief from ulcers. You could apply a little ghee directly to the ulcerated area, or drink a glass of buttermilk two or three times every day. Mouth ulcers left untreated generally go away in a week or so; with these home remedies, you can expect faster relief. However, if you notice an ulcer in the mouth that is persistently present although it does not cause you any pain, do not neglect it or try to treat it with home remedies beyond a few days. Make it a point to see a doctor soon because often, a painless mouth ulcer is one of the earliest signs of oral cancer.

Hi my son teeth is very big and unbalanced his age is 12 year please tell me how to solve the problem.
Your son is a 12 year old, but the permanent teeth which are erupting in his mouth are of the size of a fully grown adult, this is absolutely normal. The size will get matched as he grows up. If the teeth are not in a proper order or crooked in nature, please consider consulting an orthodontist, or a child specialist dentist.

You may opt for bleaching after cleaning. Veneers can be an option for front teeth if the problem is deep staining secondary to a disorder of tooth formation.

I am facing a problem of bad breath I brush twice a day yet problem is still there What should I do.
You need to get scaling (cleaning) done so as to remove all the plaque and calculus, the gum bleeding, pus and bad breath would regress over a period of 10-15 days. Also do clean your tongue properly and use a good mouthwash as well.
