At What Age Should You Get a Colonoscopy?

MBBS, MD - Medicine, Member of the Royal College of Physicians, UK (MRCP UK)
Gastroenterologist, Delhi
At What Age Should You Get a Colonoscopy?

Screening for cancer of the colon or large intestine and rectum is a proven way of saving a person from the impacts of colorectal diseases. This is partly because colon cancer is something that can be prevented if detected at an early stage and the polyps which may advance to cancer are removed properly. Thus if you are turning 50 soon, be prepared to present yourself for a screening colonoscopy that will help you ensure good health and well-being. It may sound uncanny, but do you know that 50,000 people across the world die from colorectal cancer every year, and it is ranked second in terms of cancer-centric deaths.

Understanding the importance of having colonoscopy: You may wonder how a painful, invasive, embarrassing, uncomfortable and time-consuming health test may be called a present. There are reasons enough. A screening colonoscopy is able to expose a cancerous tumour that's presently under way and cast light on the chances and risk factors that may precede it. When you choose to intervene early, you have the power to nip those risks at their budding stage, much before those malicious cells become malignant.

Spreading of the colorectal cancer: Your large intestine is really a big and last organ of the gastrointestinal system where the small intestine discontinues. Its primary function is to remove the water out of the leftover solids of digestion and get rid of them in the form of stool. Cancer may start to develop anywhere within the tube that expands 5 feet long and squares the vacant area of the abdomen. The large intestine expands up towards the right side, i.e. the ascending colon and then turns left through the liver, i.e., the transverse colon, bending down right at the spleen on its left, i.e. descending colon and loops to the middle, i.e., the sigmoid colon before it runs across the rectum and ends at the anus.

People who need a colonoscopy: To simplify matters, it can be said that all adults are at a potential risk of the colorectal cancer, including those people who lead a healthy life. But some people are at a higher risk. Those individuals have a specific gene mutation that predisposes them to develop into numerous polyps. The risk is also high with people who are first-degree relatives of a person diagnosed with cancer before the age of 50. People with Ulcerative colitis, various types of inflammatory bowel diseases and Crohn's disease are also at a higher risk.

Colorectal cancer is a serious ailment and screening colonoscopy is a feasible means of detecting any polyps that may be cancerous in the future. Speak with a reputed gastroenterologist today to stay ahead of the disease. Consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

What is the symptoms of blood cancer and is any possibility to cure this cancer if it is detected in early stage?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, blood cancer presents as uncontrolled proliferation of one of the components of blood causing suppression of others. Hence leading to symptoms like prolonged fever, frequent infection, anemia, bleeding from anywhere or easy bruising, cough, lymph node enlargement, liver or spleen enlargement etc. Yes it is possible to cure blood cancer by chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation and now we have many long term survivors leading healthy life.

Hi sir/Mam Main 22 saal ki ladki hun, maine 2 din pehle breast Usg kiya kyunki meri breast pe pain or lump feel hota tha. Main kya karu, Mere underarm ke andar kya huya? Mujhe bohat dar lagraha hai.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query If the diagnosis is fibroadenoma, then there is nothing to worry. Because - "A fibroadenoma is a non-cancerous tumor in the breast that is commonly found in women under the age of 30. According to Mammotome, fibroadenomas are diagnosed in approximately 10 percent of women in the United States (Mammotome). African-American women are more likely to develop these tumors" Certain investigations like Mammogram and if needed Fine needle aspiration may be done to rule out any other problem. Thanks.

I have undergone surgery surgery for prostrate 10 yr ago. When can I start normal life and exercises. Please tell.
Hello, although your question is not clear but if its only few days passed after the surgery and if there is pain and swelling in that area then you should take rest and avoid exercising. If its been many months after operation then you can do exercising and follow a normal routine life. Take care.

Dear Sir, Can we break radio therapy in cancer treatment (mouth cancer ). Here in my case Radio therapy is started (allahabad Location ) and we want to concert with Doctors in Delhi.

DNB SURGICAL ONCOLOGY, MS - General Surgery, DNB (General Surgery), MBBS
Oncologist, Mumbai
It's better not to interrupt radiotherapy. As there is something called as repopulation of cell which can happen and can increase chances of recurrence if radiation is interrupted. This repopulation is controlled by continuous treatment.

My uncle is suffering feom liver cancer in 3 month .his weight is losing down .he does not eat anything and vomiting ...
Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Well, it seems that his liver function has deranged considerably, and hence there is fluid (ascites) deposit in the abdomen with edematous swelling of legs too. Weight loss, weakness, anorexia, ascitis, edema etc all are associated with the advanced stage of the disease. At this juncture, your uncle does require appropriate palliative care preferably in an hospital setting which can be of help in alleviating symptoms, and avoiding complications for some time. Simultaneously, you may please connect with me in private for a treatment with natural medicines that may be of help in improving his quality of life. Do take care and all the very best.

I had a lump in my right breast which is painless. When I was 13 I felt this knot. Is that cancer.

Diploma In Postpartum Depression, Formerly , House Job , Gynecology, MBBS

Every lump is not cancer but it is always better to be alert, go for ultrasound of breast. It could be a harmless lump or could be due to hormonal changes.

How does detoxification process help cancer patients? Please let me know various detoxification processes.

Homeopath, Kurnool
Detoxification Detoxification is one of the more widely used treatments and concepts in alternative medicine. It is based on the principle that illnesses can be caused by the accumulation of toxic substances (toxins) in the body. Eliminating existing toxins and avoiding new toxins are essential parts of the healing process. Detoxification utilizes a variety of tests and techniques. Purpose Detoxification is helpful for those patients suffering from many chronic diseases and conditions, including allergies , anxiety, arthritis, asthma, chronic infections, depression, diabetes, headaches, heart disease, high cholesterol, low blood sugar levels, digestive disorders, mental illness, and obesity . It is helpful for those with conditions that are influenced by environmental factors, such as cancer, as well as for those who have been exposed to high levels of toxic materials due to accident or occupation. Detoxification therapy is useful for those suffering from allergies or immune system problems that conventional medicine is unable to diagnose or treat, including chronic fatigue syndrome, environmental illness/multiple chemical sensitivity, and fibromyalgia . Symptoms for those suffering these conditions may include unexplained fatigue , increased allergies, hypersensitivity to common materials, intolerance to certain foods and indigestion, aches and pains, low grade fever , headaches, insomnia , depression, sore throats, sudden weight loss or gain, lowered resistance to infection, general malaise, and disability. Detoxification can be used as a beneficial preventative measure and as a tool to increase overall health, vitality, and resistance to disease. Take: Mag.Sulph. 30 daily 4 pills 3 times a day. Detoxification not only help cancer patients but also to everybody.
