I am suffering from thyroid. Can I know the daily food habits and foods that not to have. Now I am using 50 mg Tablets daily morning.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. For treating hypothyroidism most important to take adequate dose of Levothyroxine, so that TSH is maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L. Maintaining TSH at this level helps in remaining free from all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. There is no special diet required for hypothyroidism. Only thing is to avoid soy beans, soy containing food products. Plus refrain from bakery items, pastries, foods made from maida. Always use whole grain flour for roti and chapati. Consume good deal of green leafy vegetables and fruits. Thanks.

What precautions one should take in case of hernia. I am suffering from 4 years. And I am afraid of surgery. Is there any other way to get rid of it.

MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Pune
Surgery is the only treatment for hernia. Surgery is recommended because complications of hernia could be life threatening. Surgery is done to reinforce the weakness in the that portion of the abdominal wall. Surgery can be done by open method or in possible cases by laparoscopic method. Don't be afraid of surgery without learning more about it. It is done to help you. Fitness for anesthesia and surgery is assessed before planning the date of surgery. Hernia surgery is a surgery commonly done for last so many decades. Avoid Constipation, avoid straining for urination, avoid lifting heavy weight. Keep your hernia manually reduced until you don't take decision for surgery.

Ms. lybrate-user ji. Blood in stools may be due to many reasons but every thing is treatable. Are you passing hard stools or you are straining while passing stools. If yes then please change your eating habits take full three meals with plenty of vegetables fruits and water and add stool softener in your daily routine. I hope you will improve if not then consult some surgeon.

Doctor advised me to take thyroid medicine Eltroxin 12. 5 mcg in morning before breakfast but I am working in night shift, my shift starts at 6.30 pm in evening and shift over at 3.30 am in morning so I take my breakfast in evening at 5.30 pm, so kindly suggest me when should take the Thyroid medicine in morning or in evening, what timing would be best to take thyroid medicine Eltroxin because I am working in night shift.

Advance BHRT Certification, Fellowship in BHRT & Longevity Medicine, Fellowship in Endocrinology, MBBS
Endocrinologist, Bangalore
It is quite simple. Take your thyroid medicine immediately upon awakening and don't take anything orally for at least half an hour after this. So if you are working night shift and wake up at 4 pm, then you should take Eltroxin at 4 pm. If your shift changes then you need to change the timing of thyroid meds accordingly. In case your shifts change frequently then I am afraid your body will have to bear the brunt of this stress. You will have to make a major effort to maintain your health.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Hypothyroidism is a thyroxine hormone deficiency disease, hence only treatment is to supplement that hormone in a specific suggested dosage. Frequently changing the dose is also not advised. Idaelly TSH should be maintained between 4 to 5 mU/L. There is no Homeopathic treatment for this condition. Thanks.

I am suffering from ambrical hernia which found in navel. It is in initial stage, I visit to doctor. Some said the only solution is surgery and some ,no need for surgery wait till I become more in size. Now suggest what should I do.

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, FIAGES
General Surgeon, Gurgaon
Umbilical hernia is like you said swelling around your navel Hernia at times can become irreducible and become complicated. Definitive Treatment of hernia is only surgical correction It can be done laparoscopically and as daycare surgery. It is not an emergency for you that you should get it done immediately but also There is no need to wait till it becomes bigger or gets complicated. So just plan it as an elective surgery in next few days / weeks.

hi vikram. inguinal(groin) hernia as well as ventral( abdominal) hernia can be now very treated with laparoscopic surgery. it reduces incision size, post op pain. recovery and return to work is fast and easy. only disadvantage is the cost and slightly high rate of reccurence. for further queries you can consult online.
