Nighttime Heartburn - 5 Ways to Avoid it!

5 Ways to alleviate nighttime heartburn

Nighttime heartburn is a very common medical condition that causes a burning sensation in the chest region due to excessive acidity in the digestive system. This condition is witnessed very often in people and mostly it tends to awaken people from their sleep thereby disrupting their sleep patterns. Here are some effective ways to cure and prevent heartburn sensations during the night time.

1. Avoid acidity triggering foods: You should avoid the foods and drinks which are harsh on your digestive system and cause acidity and heartburn related problems during the night time. Some of the common foods and drinks responsible for nighttime heartburn and need to be avoided are alcohol, caffeinated drinks like colas, coffee and tea, chocolate and cocoa, peppermint, garlic, onions, milk, fatty, spicy, greasy, or fried foods and acidic foods like citrus or tomato products.

2. Follow a proper exercising pattern: You should never exercise immediately after having your meals. Instead, a considerable amount of a time gap should exist between your meal and your workout session. Do not ever eat a heavy meal before you exercise, because in spite of giving a time gap the richness of the food will adversely affect your digestive system.

3. Quit smoking habits: If you are a chronic/chain smoker, then you might witness the blockage of your gastrointestinal tract (digestive passages), which will further degrade and worsen the heartburn condition. Easier said than done, smoking is an addictive behaviour and you should be taking special care to lessen it and ultimately quit smoking.

4. Develop a chewing habit: If you are facing a chronic and regular heartburn problem, then you should definitely try excessive chewing of materials like gums. Chewing helps to generate excessive amounts of saliva during the act and the saliva, in turn, helps to soothe the acidic activities in your esophagus, thereby decreasing the probability of frequent heartburns.

5. Adopt weight loss measure: Sometimes, excessive body weight is also one of the potential factors responsible for causing frequent heartburns. But, if you shed a couple of kilograms from your body, then you will surely witness a relative decline in the symptoms of heartburn during night.

Yes you can increase, make sure you are taking it empty stomach about 45 before breakfast. However the most important thing is your weight (93) and BMI which is 38. You are Morbidly obese and too young (23 yr). Better to consult Gastroentrologist for dietary, Endoscopic or rarely Surgical management for weight reduction urgently for risk free life ahead. Trust me weight reduction will cure your GERD. Best of luck!

Hello lybrate-user, though it's difficult for you but avoid spicy, fatty and roadside cold food. Drink clean water and if possible carry clean water during travel. Some times due to wrong food habits persistent infection occurs in stomach and cause chronic symptoms. In such case consult your doctor.

He's having anal fissure since past many months. Taking laxative. But no relief. Anus passage became narrow .pl help. Feeling discomfort becoz of it. Allergic rhinitis has become chronic pl help.

MD - Medicine, DM - Gastroenterology
Gastroenterologist, Delhi
Anal fissure generally respond well to treatment like laxatives, sitting in warm water, local ointment to relax the anal sphincters. If anal fissure persists then surgery is needed. However before surgery your doctor needs to see type of anal fissure as multiple fissure are associated with other diseases which are to be excluded.

Hello doctor,
I am using mirtazapine from past 1 year for IBS-C. Now my course is about to stop as I am feeling good....
Hi. In my opinion mirtazapine is an antidepressant. It may or may not help in IBS. I never prescribe it for IBS. Your symptoms as you told may be related to drug withdrawal. Regarding stopping the drug you should consult the doctor who advised it. For IBS I can help you with few medications and lifestyle changes. Avoid unnecessary stress and anxiety. Sleep properly, drink adequate water. Avoid spicy oily and outside food. No smoking/alcohol/tobacco etc. Eat more of green vegetables and fruits. Avoid heavy dinner. For medications you can consult me online. Thanks.

Hi. Most likely you are suffering from GERD. Other possibilities may be peptic ulcer disease or gall stones. Symptoms overlap in these conditions. Stop spicy/oily food. Stop alcohol/tobacco/smoking. Take soft bland diet khichdi, dal rice etc. Take more of fruits and vegetables. Sleep properly, drink adequate water. Get an ultrasound of abdomen done. Review with reports and consult online for medications. Thanks.

HI Gas normally enters your digestive tract when you swallow air and when bacteria in your large intestine break down certain undigested foods. Everyone swallows a small amount of air when eating and drinking. You swallow more air when you, chew gum, drink carbonated, or fizzy, drinks, eat or drink too fast, smoke, suck on hard candy, wear loose-fitting dentures. Some conditions can cause you to have more gas than usual or have more symptoms when you have gas. These conditions include the following: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) steps to swallow less air. For example, eat more slowly, avoid gum and hard candies, and don’t use a straw. If you smoke, quit smoking. You may try avoiding or limiting, carbonated, or fizzy, drinks, fried and high-fat foods, high-fiber foods for a few weeks and then slowly increasing your daily fiber intake. For any further query and treatment you can contact me through Lybrate.
