Calcium is absorbed only when Vitamin D3 is available. Coffee is caffein and has nothing to do with calcium or Vit D. But caffeine should be avoided in children. Let children have sun exposure daily for at least 30 mins for making sufficient Vit D3 in the body.

Cow milk or buffalo milk depends on your lifestyle. For general people who do not have very high physical activity, cow milk is best as it is lighter with less fat. But you should prefer milk of a desi Indian cow, not mixed breed and that also from a single cow, not mixed milk of many cows.

Meat - Red vs White Facts Check

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition, P.G. Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics, B.Sc. Home Science

Meat - Red vs White Facts Check

Meat forms an essential part of the daily diet of many people. But it often gets difficult to choose between white meat (chicken or fish) and red meat (beef or pork or mutton) due to the numerous health benefits offered by both. Moreover, both kinds of meat have some health risks as well, which should be kept in mind while consuming either of them.

Read on to find how each type of meat may affect your health, and, which will be more beneficial for your body.

Fat content

People who are more conscious about their weight often tend to choose white meat over red meat because of its lower fat content. For example, fat content in chicken is only about 11%, whereas pork contains about 45% fat. Moreover, the saturated fat content of red meat is about 2.64 times that of white meat.

Protein content

100 gm of chicken breast has about 29.80 gm of protein, whereas the same amount of lamb and pork contain 22.51 gm and 27.55 gm protein respectively. In this case, consumption of white meat will prove to be beneficial as your body can absorb only 74% of the protein in red meat and 80% of the protein in white meat.

Other nutrient content

Red meat is rich in niacin, vitamin b12, riboflavin and thiamine, iron and minerals like zinc and phosphorus. While vitamin b12 aids proper nerve health and ensures that the red blood cells function properly, zinc is responsible for strengthening your immune system.

White meat contains fewer nutrients in comparison to red meat. However, fish contains high amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which help in improving lipid profiles and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Health risks

Consumption of both types of meat has been long associated with increased risk of different diseases. The presence of myoglobin, a type of protein in red meat, is responsible for increasing the risk of certain types of cancer. Also, red meat has been often linked with increased chances of hypertension and heart diseases.

These days, feeding antibiotics to chicken for enlarging their size has become a common practise. So, consumption of this type of meat increases the amount of drug-resistant bacteria in your body and reduces the effect of useful drugs too.

White meat and red meat both have their own health benefits and risks, so including small amounts of both in your diet will prove to be beneficial for your body. Determine the amount of each type of meat you will consume depending on your body's specific requirements.

Excess consumption of soybean can increase female hormone oestrogen in men. But that happens only in very high consumption. Upto 50 gms per day is very safe. Soybean is the only complete plant protein available. So you don't have to worry if you are eating in limited quantity.

Hi. No dear you need to change your diet plan. Your BMI (Body mass index) is high its 27 so need to reduce some weight also. Do not go empty stomach for exercise take good fats like almond 4-5 ps before you are leaving. Avoid fried food for calories & cholesterol take veg soup or normal veg curry with 2ps rooti. At lunch try salads, Chicken/ fish/ soybean any one of them for protein. Limit your rice intake or rooti for low carbohydrate. At eve no fast food you can take. Try sprouts. Every day one fresh fruit you need to take. At dinner limit your rooti intake. So, for weight management limit your carbs intake like rooti, rice, maida, basan, sweets. Thanks.

I am suffering from cough and cold then what can I do and what precaution I take?

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition

I am suffering from cough and cold then what can I do and what precaution I take?
Hi, warm milk with turmeric or pepper works really well for cough when taken twice a day. Honey along with lemon has good anti-inflammation properties which soothes the throat and its better taken in the morning. Basil/tulsi leaves boiled in water and gargling salt water at least thrice a day also has good effect. Tea which is made of cinnamon and ginger once a day will alleviate the itching and pain sensation of throat. Make sure that you avoid cold foods or leftovers from refrigerator which might increase the condition. Inhaling hot air through vaporiser helps you feel better from chest and nasal blockage and clears the mucus. Avoid going out in to cold air and exposure to dust which might again increase your cough and cold. Decrease your intake of sugary foods and foods high in oil and fat which might prolong your illness.

Peppermint Tea - 6 Reasons Why You Must Drink It!

Peppermint Tea - 6 Reasons Why You Must Drink It!

Peppermint tea is a herbal tea which we know are infusions or tisanes. This tea is used as natural remedies for a wide range of health problems. It is a soothing beverage and offers a host of health benefits, particularly for those suffering from headaches, sinus problems or stomach issues. It is also an effective health tonic for your body. Peppermint tea is one of the most widely used and the most respected for its uses and benefits that you must know about.

Benefits of drinking peppermint tea:

  1. Remedy for headaches: Peppermint tea is very helpful in treating headaches. It is more effective in staunching headaches that are caused by stress or a poor diet. These headaches typically restrict blood vessels in the brain, causing pain. Usually, pain killers relieve the pain by relaxing the blood vessels in the brain. Peppermint tea also does the same, it opens up the brain's constricted blood vessels, bringing instant relief.
  2. Peppermint oil in aromatherapy is also used against headaches and colds.
  3. Remedy for sinus problems: Peppermint contains Menthol which gives it its refreshing flavour. Menthol also helps peppermint fight sinus problems. The menthol in peppermint helps in sinus problems by calming inflamed mucous membranes in the sinuses and throat and by thinning the mucous so it is less likely to block the sinus passageways. Menthol also acts as a decongestant which means it breaks down phlegm and mucous congestion. You can breathe in the steam from peppermint tea to help your sinus become mucous free.
  4. Remedy for stomach upsets: Peppermint tea is a real stomach healer as it soothes and heals stomach aches, pains, and cramps. Peppermints also get rid of heartburn, gas/flatulence, indigestion and diarrhoea. Peppermint oil is extremely effective against irritable bowel syndrome or IBS.
  5. Remedy of the brain: Peppermint tea improves brain function and makes you more mentally alert and also improves memory retrieval. Peppermint thus is extremely useful if you are driving back home after a stressful day.  It’s also useful for students and those who suffer from stress induced health problems because it calms you down.
  6. Remedy for menstrual crampsPeppermint tea is known to ease constricting muscles. This is the reason it’s very useful for athletes as well as people suffering from anxiety. For this reason, it’s also particularly effective in treating cramps caused due to the constricting the muscles in the walls of the uterus.

Other ways it helps is due to its antimicrobial and antiseptic properties, which makes it one hell of an effective skin cleanser and great for fighting bacterial infections when applied topically. It also acts as an analgesic and a treatment for skin disorders like rashes. It also has been shown to break down "bile stones" and reduce bad breath.

Hello lybrate-user, Since you haven't mentioned for what and/or which particular purpose you want to know, so I cannot give you any specific response but yes I can definitely help you out with the ingredients. Like you have already mentioned, carrot-beetroot-amla (gooseberry) is one option for mix vegetable juice. Other options can be pumpkin-almond-cinnamon smoothie, cucumber-green apple-kale smoothie, Pomegranate-raspberry smoothie, strawberry-blackberry-raspberry smoothie, orange-pumpkin-cinnamon smoothie, banana-almonds-cinnamon smoothie, oats-chocolate smoothie. Other than these you can also try orange-ginger-pink grape fruit juice, amla-ginger-pear juice, pomegranate-orange juice, etc. I really appreciate your concern, and if you are really eager in this matter, than you even create your own cocktail juice mix with all the winter fruits and vegetables and a bit surprising cinnamon and/or cardamon flavour. I hope this will be helpful to you. Thank you. Have a nice day!

Hi, I wanna know what to drink before and after the morning workout and exercises? Is having too many green tea (7-8cups) in a day a good habit or not?

Hello Lybrate user, eating the right food I the morning can affect your health all day long. Typically it takes food about 45 minutes to digest so I suggest you to eat small meals 45 minutes to an hour before you work out. For about 45-60 minutes total gym workout, your pre-workout snack should be about 200 calories. This will give you enough fuel to energize your workout but not so much so your body feels sluggish because it is using so much energy digesting. When it comes to energy, carbohydrates are your best friend! They break down quickly so your body can use the fuel to energize your workout first thing in the morning. Here are some of my favorite examples: • 1 slice whole wheat toast, 1 tbsp almond butter, ½ banana • 1/2 cup plain yogurt and ½ cup fresh berries • 1 apple & 10 cashews • 1 scoop protein powder, 1/2 cup fresh fruit or vegetable juice and post workout meal should be carbohydrate + proteins + electrolyte i.e. You can have bread omelet with juice/ banana or milk + oats and banana Green tea is good to replace with evening tea made of milk if wish to have a zero calorie drink but consuming more than 2 times a day is harmful as it lowers down the blood pressure levels, affects kidneys and even affects the joints, so its ok if you keep green tea consumption to 2 times a day and not more than that. Good luck!
