Knee Pain - How to Stop It With Strengthening Exercises?

The knee is one of the largest and most important joints of our body. It is also susceptible to wear and tear as well as injuries. Knee pain can occur due to a variety of reasons starting from conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis as well as injuries that can affect the ligaments, the joint, the menisci and femur. These are the various parts of the knees, which can suffer from degeneration or even injuries. The best way to combat chronic knee pain is through rest, ice compress and with the help of pain relieving and anti-inflammatory medication. 

While rest and ice compress for chronic knee pain and pain relieving and anti-inflammatory medication are the best ways to combat knee pain, orthopaedics also recommend the use of various strengthening exercises which can alleviate knee pain. Here are a few of the best ones!

  1. The Towel Hook: Lie down flat on your back and raise one leg, Hook a towel under the foot and press it against the towel as you pull both ends downwards, creating slight pressure. This can be done for a few seconds at a time. Remember to do this at least ten times for each foot and increase gradually. This exercise helps in strengthening your entire leg from the calf to the knee and even the thighs so that the pain subsides.
  2. Towel Roll: In towel roll exercise, after pushing knee, should do dorsiflexion and hold for 20 seconds.. Hamstring exercises are also given by placing roll towel under your feet, push down, dorsiflexion and hold for 20 seconds Adductor exercises are also given by placing small ball between your legs just above the knee joint, press and hold for 20seconds.
  3. Swing: For this exercise, you will need to sit down on a chair. Now take one leg and swing it up until it is in line with your hip. Hold it out like this before you slowly bring it down again. Do this at least twenty to thirty times for each leg and gradually increase the frequency and the number of seconds for which you hold the knee. This will also help in pain management.
  4. Knee Marches: You can also do knee marches by sitting down on a chair. You will need to march each knee up and down at least twenty to thirty times. You will need to do this for a few minutes every day and you can easily do it twice a day even when you are at work, sitting in front of a desk. You must ensure that your posture is straight and upright for this exercise.

Do the simplest things: 1) Eat right (a balanced diet) which is healthy and not junk, processed, packaged or artificially flavoured. That simply means eat freshly prepared homemade food. Add seasonal fruits and vegetables every day. 2). Exercise every day (any exercise or sports of your choice or even Yoga and pranayam ). 3) Drink enough water (8-10 glasses or a more glasses if you feel thirsty) 4) Sleep at the right time (for 7-8 hrs) which will give rest to the body and make you feel refreshed and rejuvenated everyday. 5) Keep away from things that are addictive - stimulants like alcohol and tobacco or any other things. Limit the intake of tea and coffee. 6) Keep yourself active - do your job honestly with a sense of responsibility which will keep your mind pleasent and fill you with a strong sense of self-esteem. You shall become wealthy soon due to your sincere hard work! 7) Develop some hobby which can help you relax - it can even be some kind of social service where you do not expect anything in return. This shall keep you grounded and humble and save you from conflicts in your life.

Gym timing depends upon your work schedule. Preferably morning. If not possible evening. You should always eat before and after workout. Drink banana Almonds milk shake 30 mins before workout and Protein shake predominantly after workout.

How Ayurveda Helps Reduce Knee Pain?

Ayurveda is a very old system of medicine, which originated in India. Using herbs found in nature to cure various illnesses, knee pain can also be permanently cured with this method indigenous to India. It reduces knee pain caused by various illnesses including arthritis, inflammation of the cartilage and wearing of the patella among others.

Here are some common Ayurvedic remedies, which help reduce knee pain:

  1. Alfalfa: Alfalfa is medically known as Medicago Sativa. Alfalfa is excellent for making sure that your joint pain reduces, when taken in liquid form four times a day.
  2. Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is medically known as Withania Somnifera. In the West, Ashwagandha is popularly known as Winter Cherry. Also, it has a lot of therapeutic properties, which include reducing joint pains. 
  3. Banyan: The Banyan tree's medical name is Ficus Benghalensis. It has a sap very similar to the form of rubber known as latex is derived from the Banyan tree. The Banyan tree's sap is externally applied over the joints and the pain usually disappears after a few regular applications. 
  4. Bishop's weed: The medical name for Bishop's weed is Trachyspermum Ammi. The oil extracted from this herb is usually applied to the knees to reduce the intensity of such knee pains.
  5. Celery: The medical name for celery is Apium Graveolens. Celery is not only an effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and associated pains in the knees, but it is also helpful in treating gout. It is usually agreed upon that this particular treatment is usually long lasting because of its alkaline nature.
  6. Dandelion: Dandelion's biological name is Taraxacum Officinale. It is rich in magnesium and is crucial for the correct mineralization of the bones. This mineralization allows the bones to become stronger and also prevents knee pain.
  7. Garlic: The medical name for garlic is allium sativum. Five to six cloves eaten everyday has proved to reduce knee pains.
  8. Ginger: Ginger is biologically called Zingiber Officinale. These can be easily included in your diet and go a long way in curbing knee pain.

This amount of weights should be done under an expert gym trainer. Weight increase should be slow and steady. It also depends upon your fitness level, Body building duration and how early or late in life you started weight training. There cannot be a single answer to this question for all the individuals. However if you have been training your legs and quadriceps well alongwith your back and you do not experience any abnormal knee joint pain while doing it I feel you may continue to do so. Hello Mr. lybrate-user, Since you have a medical history of IBS, it would be actually hampering the weight gain issue. So instead of focussing on increasing weight at this age, try to include a nutritious diet in your daily schedule. Try to include mire of a rice base diet which is also bland in texture. Fibrous foods which promote gut movement should be avoided. Spicy meals should be overlooked and dairy products like cheese, whole milk need to be avoided.
