Hi doc,
from past few days m in depression please suggest what to do .quick .thanks.
Depression may affect all the people during some part of their life. In some people it comes and passes away soon whereas some individuals are not able to cope with the depressive situations of life and they continue to suffer which affects their physical and mental health.  Please make a note of it that it's a phase and it will pass. *it is necessary to take enough sleep to get relief from depression. Insomnia or loss of sleep is one of the important causes of depression. Therefore, people who lack sleep should calm down their brain by taking normal sleep. *you should go out with friends and enjoy in the company of others. Do not sit alone for longer periods of time. One should engage in several activities of recreation to get some entertainment. * Morning walk increases the supply of oxygen to the brain and it helps in removing the symptoms of depression. *Healthy food is very necessary to get relief from the state of depression. *drink more water to remove the waste chemical substances from the body. *Exercise also helps in the treatment of depression. *Yoga asana and mild exercise helps to increase the supply of blood to the brain and gives quick relief from depressive state of mind. Try following these ,and report me after 15 days .if need be felt we can go for some ayurvedic medicine s and counseling. You can consult me personally for that .

Hello Mr. lybrate-user.Along with the medicines prescribed, you should get enough sleep (6-7 hours minimum) and a balanced regular diet along with daily exercise. If you are not able to exercise you can atleast go for walks in open air. Such walks are rejuvenating to the mind & body. Stress & tensions in life can have an alarming impact on one's memory. Such walks & exercise will make you feel better mentally as well. Hope you improve faster with these tips.

Dear lybrate-user, Dementia is an old/middle age problem. Memory loss at your age, will NOT be due to dementia. Probably your neurologist is right in saying, it is depression. He is NOT hiding dementia. After 2-3 weeks of Stalopam (antidepressant - not sleeping pills - take it in the morning itself) and betacap, get back to him. He may adjust the dose depending on your memory abilities and fluency. Or he may refer you to a psychiatrist for better management of your preoccupation of dementia.

Dear Lybrate user, At your age, Memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. I do abuse alcohol. Causes may be irritation because of house issues. I also tend to avoid in hand tasks & delay .probably due to effect of alcohol particularly day time. I do not have problem of sleep at night & do reasonable exercise at least 4/5 days a week. How I can get out from alcohol abuse.?

MD - Psychiatry

Alcohol dependence involves intense craving or desire to drink alcohol. People drink for pleasure or rationalize it on external factors like family problems, work tension, etc. They drink continuously, i.e. Almost daily or even weekly once or twice with withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, bodily damage, etc. You need to consult a psychiatrist and go for 3 steps of de addiction. 1st is detoxification, when alcohol is stopped and the withdrawal is made smooth with minimal discomfort, 2 nd is maintenance and further deaddiction when the physical problems and psychological state of the individual is maintained and anti-craving drugs started 3 rd rehabilitation, when relapse prevention is the goal, while maintaining deaddiction. All the best.

Behaviour Problems Among Children - Things Parents Should Know and Never Ignore!

Behaviour Problems Among Children - Things Parents Should Know and Never Ignore!

Diagnosis & Management of Behavioural Disorders in Children

Disruptive behavioural disorders are complicated and may include many different factors working in combination. For example, a child who exhibits the delinquent behaviours of Conduct Disorder may also have ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, and a difficult home life.

Diagnosis methods may include:

  1. Diagnosis by a specialist: Paediatrician, Psychologist or Child Psychiatrist.
  2. In-depth Interviews with the parents, child and teachers.
  3. Behaviour check lists or standardised Questionnaires.
  4. A diagnosis is made if the child’s behaviour meets the criteria for disruptive behaviour disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders from the American Psychiatric Association.

It is important to rule out acute stressors that might be disrupting the child’s behaviour. For example, a sick parent or victimising by other children might be responsible for sudden changes in a child’s typical behaviour and these factors have to be considered initially.

How can habit disorders affect behaviour?

Most children develop certain repetitive behaviours at an early age, but it is the frequency, persistence or its effects on the overall well-being of the child which could qualify it as a ‘Disorder’. These habits include

  1. Repetitive sucking of the thumb
  2. Biting of the nails
  3. Hitting his own self
  4. Pulling at his own hair
  5. Holding on to his breath just for the sake of it

This refers to the behavioural issues of your child which cause the child to misbehave more often; this can be due to a variety of reasons such as Improper Parenting, Persistent Family problems, Child Abuse or Neglect, or any other incident that has traumatised the child in the past, both Psychological problems or Medical illnesses etc.

Preventive Measures:

  1. Respect Others Space - Your child may be very excited to tell you about some special event or happening in school, but teach him not to interrupt you when you are at work. He must learn to respect other people’s space and have patience while dealing with people. Otherwise, he would not be able to take rejections and thus be inconsiderate in his attitude.
  2. Adjustment with Peers - Monitor how he behaves with his playmates. Stop him when he happens to fight with his playmates or fights with them aggressively and teach him how exactly to behave with people.
  3. Firm Discipline - You should deal with stubbornness with a bit of high-handedness. Look at your child right into the eye and tell him what is expected of him. Be tough, but not rude.
  4. Balance Independence - Monitor his use of PCs, laptops and mobiles. Well, that doesn’t mean you need to loom over everything he does on his gadget, but do try to watch over the content whether it is inappropriate or not. But remember to never really pry and barge into his privacy. Respect that and you can still humour him.

Treatment of behavioural disorders in children

Untreated children with behavioural disorders may grow up to be dysfunctional adults. Generally, the earlier the intervention, the better the outcome is likely to be.  Treatment is usually multifaceted and depends on the particular disorder and various factors contributing to it, which may include:

  1. Parental education – For example, teaching parents how to communicate with and manage their children.
  2. Family therapy – The entire family is helped to improve communication and problem-solving skills.
  3. Cognitive behavioural therapy – To help the child to control their thoughts and behaviour.
  4. Social training – The child is taught important social skills, such as how to have a conversation or play cooperatively with others.
  5. Anger management – The child is taught how to recognise the signs of their growing frustration and given a range of coping skills designed to defuse their anger and aggressive behaviour. Relaxation techniques and stress management skills are also taught.
  6. Support for associated problems – For example, a child with a learning difficulty will benefit from professional support.
  7. Use of Reinforcement – Many children with behavioural disorders experience repeated failures at school and in their interactions with others. Encouraging the child to excel in their particular talents (such as sport) can help to build self-esteem using positive reinforcements both verbal and non-verbal.
  8. Medication – To help control impulsive behaviours if required so.

Alcohol - 6 Reasons It Is Bad For Your Sex Life!

Alcohol - 6 Reasons It Is Bad For Your Sex Life!

If you are a heavy drinker and you are having problems with your sex life, they are likely to be caused because of your alcohol consumption. Sex and alcohol are not considered to be a good mixture. Although a small amount of alcohol is harmless, moderate to heavy drinking can hamper your sex life in several ways. Moreover, alcohol is very dangerous for pregnant women.

Alcohol can lead to sexual problems and issues in both men and women. It can also make them behave in a different and unusual manner, which may lead them into having sex with people who are unsuitable. It makes people take unnecessary risks and many get infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Unwanted pregnancy after having sex is a common aspect in today’s world. Alcohol also makes people likely to be victims of sexual attacks.

The bad effects of alcohol on your sex life
There are several bad effects of alcohol which take a toll on your sexual life. They are as follows:

  1. Alcohol may make people more likely to engross in sexual activity with the wrong person. Getting pregnant, catching infections and embarking in affairs which lead to the breakup of many marriages are common effects of alcohol. Alcohol is a primary reason for the demand of the emergency contraceptive or morning after pill, all over the world.
  2. Alcohol fuddles up people's brain and many of them forget to take proper contraceptive precautions before having sex.
  3. Alcohol is very harmful for unborn babies in pregnant women. It may cause brain damage to the baby. You should consume alcohol as less as possible during pregnancy and totally avoid it during the first three months of pregnancy.
  4. Alcohol accounts for being a major cause of erectile dysfunction or impotence in men. Alcohol may increase your sexual desire, but it reduces your performance.
  5. Men who are heavy drinkers may develop a permanent case of brewer’s droop. Loss of sexual interest is also likely.
  6. Excessive alcohol may lead to diminished or reduced libido in women as well. It is yet to be proven whether alcohol causes any other sexual complications in women.

If you are facing problems with excessive alcohol consumption and it is affecting your sex life, you need to take some steps. It is recommended to consult an alcohol counsellor or join the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group.

Emotion Abuse On Children - Things You Must Know!

Emotion Abuse On Children - Things You Must Know!

Emotional abuse is a lesser known topic that is very important to talk about. Most individuals are oblivious to the fact that such a term even exists. This article is mainly about educating people about what emotional abuse is, how it affects children, thereby, affecting the upcoming generation altogether.

Like physical abuse, emotional abuse too is very real and harmful enough to cause enormous damage to a child’s mental health. So what exactly is emotional abuse?

Any sort of persistent, emotional neglect or emotional maltreatment can become emotional abuse to children and may cause havoc in their emotional development. The world runs at a very fast pace and parents usually are caught up in earning well for the family, raising the children properly and transforming them into respectable adults. This entire process brings about enormous stress and frustration. As such, unknowingly or knowingly, these parents end up emotionally abusing their children. No, that is not the end of it. It is not only the parents who can cause emotional abuse, but also there are numerous other factors to be considered.

So to make the explanation process easier, here are some points that explain what emotional or psychological abuse includes.

  1. Scaring or humiliating a child deliberately and regularly
  2. Isolating or ignoring a child
  3. Telling a child that he/she is worthless, inadequate or unloved
  4. Not providing the children any opportunity to express him/her by deliberately silencing them or making fun of their expression
  5. Age inappropriate or developmentally inappropriate expectations from children. For example, making a child believe that topping the class is necessary and is a shame otherwise.
  6. Overprotecting the child and hindering their exploration and learning
  7. Preventing them from participating in an absolutely normal social interaction. For example, asking girls not to mix with boys and punishing them for doing so.
  8. A child seeing or hearing utter ill-treatment of another child or person
  9. Serious bullying by other children and cyber bullying
  10. Threatening a child and calling names
  11. Making a child perform any sort of act that might be degrading
  12. Exposing a child to distressing interactions like domestic abuse or drug abuse.
  13. Not expressing positive or congratulatory feelings to the child
  14. Not showing any sort of emotional attachment or interactions with the child
  15. Causing physical abuse to the child.
  16. Trying too hard to control the child’s life and not allowing him/her to recognize their individuality.

Yes, there is no such thing as good parenting or bad parenting. However, parents need to know how much any sort of emotional abuse may affect the future development of their child.

Hi Feeling depressed always on my sexual orientation I not want to be gay. I want to be a normal person like my frien...
There are many factors that may have influenced this gay mindset. It could be due to genetic factors; mixed parenting roles between mother and father; an over-bearing father/mother; you may have cultivated the drive when we are all in that phase between 7 years to 14 years when we tend towards homosexual contacts with our peers as a social adaptation; You may have had gay exposure at some time in your life; you may have had too much of male exposure during a considerable part of your life; You could have cultivated more of anima than animus and vice versa depending on the role you have identified with; and it may happen because of some social development when you may have found it easier to relate to boys than to girls. These are some of the reasons that I can think of right now. If you do not like it, don’t just resist it because that will make you want it more. Instead talk to a sexologist and understand these orientations and get some education on sex and sexuality to know what your urges are all about. Then he could propose some measures to take to cultivate your heterosexual drives instead. In the meantime, do spend time with girls and learn to enjoy their company and to respect them overall. If you indulge in the thought of your attraction towards boys it will trouble you no end. Just let it be there but cultivate healthy relationships with them and spend more time in female company. In time you will be able to appreciate your leanings towards girls more. If you wish you may go for hypnotherapy too.

I recently Discovered about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? I would like to know what is it exactly? I would also like ...
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) focuses on how people think and act in order to overcome their emotional and behavioral problems. It is a form of short psychotherapy. It acts by helping patients identify and evaluate Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs). By doing so, patients become able to think more realistically. As a result they feel better emotionally and able to behave more functionally. When patients change their underlying beliefs about themselves, their world and other people, therapy results in long lasting changes.

Dear Lybrate user. In many of the cases Stammering has two important reasons. Vocal chord misalignment or other problems are the primary reason. For this vocal chord complaint, you should consult an ENT specialist and get it corrected. Second reason is purely psychological. Stammer therapy can help you in psychological reasons. Take care.

Autism Spectrum - How Homeopathy Can Help?

Autism Spectrum - How Homeopathy Can Help?

One of the best pleasures of life is to watch a child grow up and begin to learn and explore new things in the surroundings. However, children affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or autism may not be able to do this at the same pace as other kids. They are a little slow to respond and may not socialise very easily.

ASD is a collective term used for a range of symptoms, including poor verbal and nonverbal communication, poor social skills, repetitive behaviour, and impaired learning abilities. The onset and severity of symptoms also vary across children. While some show symptoms in preschool, others would be completely normal and start showing symptoms after a couple of years of schooling. The following are some symptoms that indicate the child could have autism.

  1. Lack of babbling by 9 months of age
  2. No response when called by their name even after 12 months of age
  3. Not uttering single words by the age of 16 months, two words by 24 months
  4. Lack of social skills including resistance to cuddling, not mingling with other kids
  5. Self-injurious behaviour like banging head on the wall, hurting a toy, etc.

Homeopathy offers safe, effective remedy for children with autism. Treatment regime is highly customised based on underlying and accompanying symptoms of each patient. The following are commonly used ingredients; however, self-medication is best avoided.

  1. Agaricus: The child talks and sings but does not respond. There is indifference, fearlessness, shouting, constant jerking of the head, difficulty reading, possible double vision and feels awkward physically and mentally.
  2. Carcinosin: The child is obstinate and has compulsive obsessive tendencies. It is hyperactive, does not sleep, has addictive tendencies, and likes to drink milk which worsens the symptoms.
  3. Androctonus: The child is destructive, suspicious, mischievous, but very quick to respond. The child behaves very well at times and can be very naughty at other times.
  4. Helleborus: The child is generally weak, slow to respond, appears thoughtless, often stares into air, and looks depressed with involuntary sighing and habit of lip biting. Sight, hearing, and taste could be affected.
  5. Cuprum Metallicum: The child is extremely tense, irritable, rigid, malicious, and very difficult to handle. Does not like to be touched or spoken to or played with. Can be aggressive with the parents, driving them to despair.

May have tics infestation on the scalp.
Another recent approach is the CEASE (Complete Elimination Autism Spectrum Expression) Therapy. This combines homoeopathy with orthomolecular medicines that provide the required nutrition for brain development (vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, etc.) This helps in overall brain development and restoring function in affected children. As noted, the right potency of these products will determine the response to treatment. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a homeopath.
