I am a 18 years old male and have dust allergy for last 1 year. What should I do?

Certified Diabetes Educator, Registered Dietitian (RD), PGDD, Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S), General Physician
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Is your dust allergy is severe? dust allergies are caused by many substances like pollen, mites, wood etc. Many lifesyle changes can help: avoid using galichas\carpeting instead go for hardwood or vinyl\ tiles floors. Vacuum upholstered furniture such as sofas. Wood, leather, plaster, or metal furniture is better for dust allergies. Replace drapes with roll-up window shades. If you must have curtains, wash them in hot water each season. Get rid of stuffed animals, stuffed furnitures, soft toys, and other dust collectors. Once you get the allergy then it can be cured by use of certain medications which I may prescribe. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

To gain weight, eat food with extremely high caloric value. Try to increase your food intake without consuming too much fat and sugar. Regular meals, especially breakfast are important if you find it difficult to gain weight. Eat late - having snacks at bedtime may help to gain weight. Relax after having meal. Eat frequently- eat five or more meals a day. Do regular exercise. Take ashwagandha churna with water twice a day. Take pranacharya krishata nashak capsule twice a day. Drink milk three times a day.

1.Take 11 guava leaves, 11 black pepper, 1 cup milk and one cup water. Put all of them in pot and boil it well, when it reduced to one cup, drink in empty stomach. Take this daily for at least six months or a year. 2.Boil cumin seeds in water and inhale the steam. It helps dilate the bronchial passage. 3.Take 5 gm of ginger, black pepper, cardamom, clove, cinnamon, turmeric and 30 gm of sugar. Grind the mix to a powder. Take half to one teaspoonful and mix it nicely with honey. Take it twice a day 4.Pulses like old rice (rice which is stored for at least one year is called old), wheat, barley, kulattha, mung beans, arhar beans, etc . should be consumed. 5.Honey, warm drinks like herbal teas, spice teas are also okay. 6.Sprouts, nuts and seeds can be taken in moderate amount. 7.The heavy foods and those which make ama should be avoided. Heart rate 100/110 per minute may be due to variety of reasons. Simple anxiety can increase your heart rate. As long as you have symptom control with montus AB nothing more needs to be done. Do review with your doctor regularly for any changes in your medication.

Allergies - Causes Behind It!

Allergies - Causes Behind It!

Allergies, or allergic reactions, are common occurrences, which are caused by unnatural reactions between your body's immune system and foreign substances, which have gained access into the body. When these substances, known as allergens, enter your body, your immune system produces antibodies, which are responsible for warding off unwanted substances like harmful viruses or diseases and helping in the body's overall resistance.

However, when antibodies identify a particular allergen as harmful, when it really isn't, a reaction occurs which may lead to inflammation or infection of the skin, sinuses, the digestive tract and the respiratory tract, among others. Allergies usually differ from individual to individual and can vary from mild skin irritations to fatal life-threatening emergencies.

Symptoms
Symptoms of allergies depend upon a wide range of factors, which are subjective and vary from person to person and from allergen to allergen. Depending upon the type of allergen involved and the nature of the allergy, symptoms may include any of the following:

  1. Sneezing
  2. Running nose
  3. Severe itching
  4. Swollen or red and watery eyes
  5. Hives
  6. Rashes
  7. Facial swelling
  8. Wheezing
  9. Flaky skin which can peel off

These symptoms are common in mild to moderate allergies, such as atopic dermatitis, hay fever, drug or food allergies. There are certain rare cases (say, scorpion stings), however, in which the allergic reaction turns out to be potentially life-threatening. This type of reaction is known as anaphylaxis. Here are its signs and symptoms:

  1. Intense shortness of breath
  2. Lightheadedness
  3. Nausea and vomiting
  4. Loss of consciousness
  5. Skin rashes
  6. Weak pulse
  7. A significant drop in blood pressure

Causes
The main cause of allergy is the uncontrolled reaction between the immune system's antibodies and harmless allergens. Allergic reactions are triggered when antibodies, like histamine, come into contact with particular types of allergens. These may include:

  1. Airborne allergens: Pollen, mold, or dust mites
  2. Insect stings: Bee stings or scorpion stings
  3. Certain eatables: Peanuts or sea food
  4. Medications: Penicillin or penicillin-based antibiotics
  5. Latex: Latex or other substances,  which are responsible for causing allergic skin reactions. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Homeopath.
