Hi, I would suggest you to first pay a sound attention to your physical health. Start with a brisk walk daily for minimum 45 minutes wearing sports shoes. Do slow and deep breathing for 10 minutes after waking up in the morning and before going to bed in the night. Also have a stomach full of healthy breakfast after 2-3 hours of waking up in the morning. Do this routine for at least 15 days and you yourself will feel the positive difference in yourself.

I have some short of depression like I am addicted to tobbaco. I eat medicine then eat tobacco so it doesn't improve my health. Can you suggest me some action to come out of this situation?

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear Sohil, Many persons fighting with depression, get addicted to tobacco. Antidepressants and nicotine in tobacco, act on the same nerve cells. So their interaction may be not be effective, if they are used together. Why don't you plan and quit tobacco and take only antidepressant for improving your health? Quitting tobacco may be difficult, but not impossible. Try for 12 weeks continuously. All the best.

Dear lybrate-user. Welcome to lybrate. I will advise you not to reduce your sleep. You must sleep at least 6 hours in a day and please maintain it. Memory and mind power depends mainly on three aspects. Understanding, storage and recollection. To understand what you are studying, you must be able to be attentive or concentrate. Concentration is possible when you are interested in that subject. Creative way of learning can help you concentrate and understand easily. When you are able to understand and concentrate, it is stored within your brain. If you read more and more it will be store in long term memory. Third part is retrieval. Whenever you want to retrive what you learned and stored, your brain gets the request, searches the database and retrieves the information for you. The retrieval may prove to be difficult if you are anxious, stressed, worried or tired physically or mentally. Retrieval is more easy when you are relaxed and healthy. Brain needs nutrients to keep itself sharp. Fruits, vegetables and dry fruits provide much needed nutrients for your brain. Include at least one fruit in your daily diet. Physical exercises, entertainment, hobbies, relaxation, memory games like sudoku etc help keep your memory sharp and active. Take care.

Self motivation is the best way. The chewing gums in the market are just to help you with quitting but you need to be strong willed.

Dear , I can understand your problem. Psychiatric problems are always treated with a combination of medicines, psychotherapy and counseling. You are taking medicines but not supplementing it with psychotherapy and counseling. In fact, psychotherapy and counseling will help you to quit the medicine and continue without medicines. Ayurveda may help you but not to the extent of what psychotherapy and counseling can. Please contact me with every detail and I will help you. Take care.

I am male 29 years, having depression problem and always thinking negatively and sometime feeling angry, lonely, badly can you pls suggest me how to overcome above problems.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
If you have depression then there are some major ramifications to take into account. I believe there may be some genetic predisposition or there has been some childhood issue, related to anger, that needs urgent attention. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

I overthink a lot. this has reduced my weight. Bcoz of over thinking, I get depressed many times. There is a lot of negativity in my me. It is affecting my health and many relations. I am not able to ignore the things which is not good for me. Lots of unnecessary thoughts are there in my mind.

MD Psychiatry, MBBS

Dear Ms. lybrate-user, I can understand what you must be going through. Overthinking, negative thoughts are suggesting of underlying depressive and anxiety disorder. You should consult a psychiatrist and get yourself evaluated completely. Depression and anxiety disorders respond well to treatment. Medications and psychotherapy will help you recover. In addition, start exercising daily. Start writing diary daily in order to vent out your feelings and emotions. I do hope that you recover completely. Best wishes.

Why my mind is unstable, I find it difficult to concentrate or being in present, constant negative thinking is always there, I doubt myself, I am facing these problems from long time. I even get scared easily when crackers burst or when dog passes in front of me, or when I have to travel through crowded train. What actually is the meaning of faint hearted I am so morally weak, I don't know what to do, a lot of confusion in my life. Does this means that I am faint hearted.

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate-user, you are morally weak as well as faint hearted. That does never mean you are a failure. Even with the said problems people excel. Due to these, it is easy to develop an inferiority complex and introversion and both of them are going to do good to you. Along with that you also have a moderate amount of generalized anxiety disorder. All these aspects can be managed (not cured) and you can live a normal happy life. Many aspects of your negative thoughts can be cleared and many can be managed. I suggest you to consult a psychologist for necessary advise. Take care.

Hi, I can understand your concern. Encourage your partner to be more open with you. Sharing more of your emotions with your partner and encouraging your partner to do the same with you will help strengthen your bond. Make it a habit to confide in each other every day. Some opening questions for confiding in your partner include: “Remember when we used to go walking and talking around the neighborhood, walking the dogs together? Let’s do that again tonight…How about it?” “What happened yesterday between us didn’t go so well, and I want to try another way-can we start over and this time I will take some deep breaths and listen more patiently. I also want to say what works better for me and find out what you are hoping for.” Be considerate of each other’s needs. In order to move forward in your relationship, you will both need to learn how to understand each other’s needs. The best way to uncover what your partner needs and let him or her know what you need is to talk about it. If you are not sure what your spouse wants or needs, the best way to find out is to ask questions and listen. If you still are not sure, ask more questions. For example, you could say something like, I think that what you need from me is ________. Is that what you mean? Ask your partner to commit to change. If you decide that you are ready to move forward in your relationship with your partner, you should ask your partner to promise you that he or she will not follow the same pattern of behavior that led to the affair. Ask your partner to articulate or even write out what that behavior includes and commit to change Establish consequences to deal with the possibility of another affair. Since there is a possibility that your partner may cheat again, you should work together to establish consequences for another affair. These consequences may include things like divorce, losing custody of your children, or other repercussions. You may want to get these consequences in writing and work with a lawyer to make them legally binding If you are having a hard time dealing with your emotions because of your partner’s cheating, consider talking to a mental health professional by yourself to deal with these emotions.

DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Hyderabad
Most probably you are suffering from a refractory type of epilepsy or your compliance to medicine is not good (i mean missing the doses of epilepsy medicine in between) or the medicine you are taking is not appropriate for your epilepsy type or not in proper doses, consult a epileptologist or atleast a neurologist in person.
