Thrombolysis - Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Of It!

Thrombolysis - Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Of It!

Formation of blood clots in the arteries of the lungs, heart or legs can actually kill a person. In such a case, the immediate medical action is necessary and the only way to deal with blood clots is thrombolysis.
Thrombolysis or thrombolytic therapy is a medical process that dissolves blood clots and facilitates blood flow to all parts of the body. Thus, it protects tissues and muscles from damage.

What are the causes of blood clots in the body?

• Poor blood circulation
• Conditions such as Deep Venous Thrombosis and atrial fibrillation
• Blood clots can also be formed because of dialysis catheters and by-pass grafts

How can you tell if you have blood clots?

• Swelling in one or more legs
• Cramp and tenderness in the legs
• Breathing trouble might indicate that blood clots have travelled to the lungs
Sweating and frequent chest pain may suggest that blood clots have travelled to the heart

How is Thrombolysis performed?

Thrombolytic drugs are injected into the body intravenously. They make their way to where the blood clots exist and dissolve them. If there is a medical emergency, the drugs are delivered to the exact location of the blood clots and immediately start dissolving them. Another method is inserting a device into the blood clot infested region to break the clots up. The drugs which on entering the body dissolve blood clots are called thrombolytics. There are many varieties of thrombolytics such as the following-

Streptokinase - It is a kind of enzyme. It is used when a person has just suffered a heart attack or pulmonary embolism. Doctors do not usually prescribe the second usage of this drug. It is injected into a vein and can be administered to pregnant women.

Tenecteplase - Also an enzyme, it is a plasminogen activator. When it binds to the surface of the blood clot, it makes the clot degenerate.

Reteplase - It is actually extracted from E-Coli. It is a sterile intravenous bolus injection

The leading cause of heart attacks and ischemic heart disorder is the formation of blood clots in the arteries that connect the heart and the brain. Thrombolysis is often employed as an emergency treatment for this purpose. Thrombolysis is also effective against blood clots formed in the lungs (which lead to acute pulmonary embolism). Sometimes blood clots are formed in the legs, upper extremities of the body, the pelvic region (deep vein thrombosis). These clots may travel to the lungs and heart.

Consult your doctor before undergoing the treatment.

Reasons Why You Should See A Sexologist!

Reasons Why You Should See A Sexologist!

Only a few years back, visiting a sexologist was a big taboo. People would never feel comfortable sharing their intimate moments. Lately, as societies have become advanced, People are gradually getting liberal about such issues. Sexologists now claim to have more clientele than ever before. Stressful competitive lives, ego clashes and individualistic thinking destroy couples ability to enjoy intimacy to a large extent. Thus, in general, there is a greater need for an expert help in present times.

Sex is strongly linked to our physical, emotional and psychosocial health and determines our relationships and happiness to a large extent. For many, sex is the most exciting part of a relationship and gives immense pleasure and contentment. For such couples, it is a pillar of strength as they derive confidence and trust in their relationship through a good sex life.

Unfortunately, this does not hold true for many partners. Many struggle to find answers to their problems. Many struggle with failed relationships and fail to enjoy the act itself. Human relationships are quite complex and sex is an indispensable part of it. Understanding and dealing with sexual issues require a lot of sensitivity. An expert such as a sexologist can help partners explore causes for their unhappiness and plan interventions to turn on the spark.

There are quite a few physiological reasons that explain issues around sex. Those can be treated with medical intervention, however, most have associated psychological issues and require counselling. Let’s have a look at them:

  1. Penis Size: The size of penis is a matter of great concern for men. Small size penis can affect a man’s confidence making him anxious and nervous thus affecting his performance drastically. The doctor may advise drugs and hormonal treatment and an expert may help the patient overcome confidence issues.

  2. Erectile Dysfunction: Lose erection or inability to hold erection can cause severe distress among men. This is curable in most of the cases. A sexologist can help the patient restore his sex life to normal.

  3. Pain and Discomfort During or After Intercourse: If any of the partners experience pain during or after intercourse, the experience becomes traumatic. Painful intercourse is caused due to many reasons including infections, lesions, ulcers or dryness. The treatment for the same is available. It is extremely important to consult a doctor and get yourself treated than to linger on with an infection and suffer in silence.

Apart from this, loss of interest in sex, fears or inhibitions due to an abusive experience may become obstacles to achieving marital bliss. A sexologist deals with issues surrounding relationships and intimacy and provides a guided self-help personal intervention so you achieve the best in your relationship.

Enlarged Prostate - 8 Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore!

Enlarged Prostate - 8 Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore!

The prostate gland in males surrounds the urethra, through which urine and sperm are passed out of the body. Its function is to secrete a fluid, which provides nourishment to the sperm. It is about the shape of a walnut and is present between the pubic bone and the rectum.

As a man crosses 40, the prostate gland begins to increase in size due to an increase in the number of cells. This is known as hyperplasia. The condition is usually benign and therefore the name benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). As it continues to grow, there is an increased pressure on the urethra. Therefore, there can be problems with urination. The bladder, being a muscular organ, compensates to some extent and so the problems with urination are mostly managed. If left untreated, this can continue to be a major problem and the bladder may not be able to compensate. In men who are 60-plus, BPH is very common.

Signs and symptoms

  1. One of the initial symptoms of BPH is when the urine stream begins to grow weak.
  2. There could also be a reduced speed of passing urine.
  3. Men with BPH never have a feeling of complete emptying of the bladder.
  4. On the other hand, there is also a constant difficulty in initiating a urine stream. There could be intermittent breaks in the urine stream.
  5. The person may feel the need to strain to initiate the stream and to ensure complete emptying.
  6. There could be dribbling of urine after passing urine.
  7. The duration between two bathroom visits can constantly reduce, with the constant urge to urinate.
  8. There is a constant urge to visit the bathroom, which is more common in the night. One of the most annoying features of BPH is the walking up at night to urinate, but with an inability to initiate a stream and an inability to completely empty the bladder, it leaves the person very irritated and frustrated.
  9. There could be blood in the urine. In fact, blood in the urine accompanied by fever, chills, nausea and vomiting are indications of an emergency.
  10. There could be blockage of urine completely, if the enlargement is quite severe.

Diagnosis
If you are having any of these symptoms, then the doctor will first test for an enlarged prostate through a digital rectal exam. Then a test is done to check a chemical called prostate specific antigen.  Increased levels of this chemical is almost always indicative of BPH. In addition, X-rays and scanning may be used to confirm diagnosis.

Treatment
Though medications are available, confirmatory treatment is through surgical removal. The procedure needs a inimum of 2 to 3 days.

Seborrheic Dermatitis - Which Ayurvedic Remedies Can Help You?

The red, itchy rash on your scalp or body with dandruff-like flakes is actually caused due to seborrheic dermatitis. This skin disease’s resemblance the symptoms of dandruff, eczema, psoriasis or a skin allergy, that seborrheic dermatitis often goes undiagnosed. This is actually bad for your health, as the seborrheic dermatitis patches keep reappearing and get larger. Ayurveda and nature have solutions how to tackle this skin scourge and keep them controlled.

Seborrhea can occur on any part of your body as well as your scalp. It’s symptoms are yellowish flakes and oily scales along with reddened skin. This disease usually occurs on oily areas of your body, such as the face, side of the nose, upper chest and back. The affected skin also looks swollen and greasy. Since seborrheic dermatitis tends to occur in areas of heavy sebum or oil production, studies show that oily skin can be the cause of the disease. Other causes are yeast infection of the skin, and any disease that reduces your immunity like AIDS, or a condition that affects the nervous system like Parkinson’s disease.

Allopathic treatments for the disease are many and they do work, especially if your seborrheic dermatitis is mild. Doctors usually prescribe antifungal creams or medicated shampoos like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, coal tar, and zinc pyrithione. These do control the symptoms for a while, but the symptoms tend to be back with a change of season. In more severe cases, you may also have to ingest corticosteroid medication to calm the inflammation that occurs due to this skin infection.

This usually prevents a flare-up. Ayurveda is the only therapy that treats seborrheic dermatitis from its roots. Seborrheic dermatitis is a disease that occurs due to the increase in Kapha and Vayu doshas inside your body and is known as Darunak in Ayurveda. Hence, Ayurvedic physicians recommend that you should avoid cold and dry weather, and certain foods to reduce the effects of these two doshas. Avoid too much salt, sour, cold items, curds, eggs and eat more bitter veggies. Oil treatments are very effective and so are certain panchakarma procedures like Abhyangam, Murdha thaila, Virechan, Nasyam are recommended under supervision. Marichyadi tailam is highly recommended for external application on the skin regularly.

Ayurveda also highly recommends the following herbs for controlling seborrheic dermatitis:

  1. Amla: An anti-oxidant that raises immunity levels to stop flare-ups of seborrheic dermatitis.
  2. Giloy: A herb that heals inflammation, due to increased pitta levels in your body.
  3. Neem: This calms pitta. Wash the area affected by skin infection with neem infused water.
  4. Daru Harida: Another powerful healing herb that calms pitta.
  5. Mulethi: This regulates hormonal levels and prevents flare-ups.

Prevention is better than cure. Boost your body immunity by having healthy food and regular exercise. Hygiene and regular bath are equally important, to do wonders in keeping such skin infections at bay.

Laser Skin Tightening - Knowing The Procedure!

Laser Skin Tightening - Knowing The Procedure!

Laser skin tightening is a procedure that uses laser to enhance the appearance of the skin and treat minor facial flaws. This procedure is performed with the help of two types of lasers: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative laser is used to remove thin layers of skin, while a non-ablative laser is the one which causes growth of collagen and tightens the skin underneath.

Non-ablative laser is less invasive and requires less time to recover, although it's less effective than laser resurfacing, which is done with an ablative laser.

A laser tightening skin procedure can decrease fines lines on the face, making you look younger and giving a smooth appearance to your skin. It can also be used to treat uneven skin tone and improve your complexion, besides helping the treatment of sunburns and scars to a certain extent.

This procedure is usually used to treat:

  1. Wrinkles
  2. Liver or age spots
  3. Skin damage caused by sun rays
  4. Scars caused due to accidents, chicken pox or severe acne
  5. Irregular or uneven skin tone or texture

Before performing the procedure a doctor is likely to check your:

  1. Medical history - Doctors cross check your current and previous medical history, including medications and medical conditions.
  2. Physical examination - A skin test is very common prior to performing such a surgery.

After the procedure is carried out, you may encounter initial minor problems like acne, itchingswelling or redness.

You may be advised to take medications and avoid direct exposure to sunlight. During the procedure, a highly intense beam of light is directed on the skin. This laser beam destroys the upper layer of skin and also heats the underlying layers of epithelial cells. Resultantly, it causes the collagen fibers to shrink, thereby tightening your skin and giving you a younger appearance. Post the procedure, ice packs can be used to cool down the skin.

Prostate Operation - 14 Ways To Recuperate From It!

A prostate operation involves the removal of a part of the prostate gland or sometimes the removal of the entire prostate gland. Such a surgery is a serious one and several recovery tips must be followed by a patient to ensure quick and successful healing.

Here are some important tips for recuperating from a prostate operation:

  1. After the surgery, you need to spend up to three days in the hospital for initial recovery. You might be given fluids, which go directly into your veins until you fully recover from anesthesia.
  2. After the operation, normal urination will be disrupted in the beginning, as the urethra stays swollen. Urinating gets a little difficult and uncomfortable for a few days after the removal of the catheter.
  3. You may feel fatigued and may feel under the weather for some weeks after a prostate operation. So you must take things easy for at least two months.
  4. Avoid lifting or moving heavy objects for some weeks following the surgery. Do not perform any exercise, which causes strain. You should ask your friends and family members to carry out chores for you.
  5. After becoming slightly stable you should start gentle exercises. Walking is an effective remedy, which helps in blood circulation and lowers the risk of getting blood clots in the legs.
  6. You should drink lots of water during the recovery stage. This will reduce the risk of getting a urinary tract infection and also help in clearing any trace of blood from your urine.
  7. For improving bladder control, you should perform several pelvic floor exercises.
  8. In case of any kind of pain, you can take over the counter painkillers to ease the pain.
  9. It will take you a time span of three to six weeks for total recovery after a prostate operation. You should consult a surgeon about the best time to return to normal daily activities.
  10. You can get back to work soon, but it depends on your nature of work. Office jobs are not much of a problem, but in case of physical labour, more time is needed before you can resume your duties.
  11. Activities such as driving can be started quite soon after initial recovery. However, it varies from person to person. Some people may get back to driving within two weeks while some may need a month.
  12. You have to wait for 6 to 8 weeks after a prostate operation before getting back to sexual activities.
  13. In case you experience high fever, pain during urination or the inability to urinate, you must consult your doctor immediately.
  14. It takes a person several weeks to recover from a prostate operation completely. Initially, total rest is required. But eventually, he can return to normal activities and lead a healthy life.

When Is Kidney Dialysis Is Required?

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, MD, DNB (Nephrology)
Nephrologist, Delhi
When Is Kidney Dialysis Is Required?

Kidneys are a pair of organs that are located on either side of the spine, each about a size of a fist. The kidneys help in purifying blood by removing toxins, waste materials and excess fluids from the human body. Disorders and dysfunctions of the kidney can lead to severe and often fatal consequences. When the kidneys stop functioning as they are supposed to, dialysis is performed to resume normal functioning in the body.

Dialysis is a type of treatment, which filters and purifies the blood with the aid of a machine. It is an artificial way of purifying blood. There are two types of dialysis, namely hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis, the most common form of dialysis, which involves using a manmade kidney called a hemodialyzer, which removes toxins and waste materials from blood.

Peritoneal Dialysis, on the other hand, is a type of treatment which involves implanting a catheter in the stomach. During the procedure, a fluid called dialysate flows into the abdomen that absorbs all the waste material, which is consequently drained out of the body.

You may need a dialysis if:

  • Your kidneys are dysfunctional
  • When waste materials and toxins start to accumulate in the body
  • In an event of an injury or accident to the kidney such as internal lacerations (wound caused by the tearing of a tissue)
  • If the creatinine (a type of a chemical waste product) level falls to 10-12 cc/minute
  • In an event where the kidneys aren't able to work properly leading to accumulation of toxins, irregular amounts of chemicals in the body and other dysfunctions

Weakening of the abdominal muscles and weight gain are some of the risks involved in dialysis. Dialysis is a temporary treatment and serves to function till the time the actual kidneys get repaired. In chronic cases of kidney disease, kidney transplant may perhaps be the last resort.

Lifestyle Disease - Does Homeopathy Has An Answer?

Over the past few decades, lifestyle disorders have been on a mercurial rise. Sedentary lifestyle, amalgamated with unhealthy eating habits has been the wrecker in chief. Lack of proper awareness has made the situation even worse. The mad and competitive rush to reach the pinnacle has serious health implications. Almost every second individual suffer from some kind of lifestyle disorders. Unhealthy and stressful lifestyle has resulted in increased incidences of Obesity and Diabetes (Type II). Individuals from all age groups have been affected by obesity and diabetes. Anxiety and depression are also on the rise. Other lifestyle disorders like Alzheimer's disease, Stoke, Arteriosclerosis, Hypertension, Hypothyroidism, Cancer (mostly skin, and lung), Cardiac problems, Renal failure, Chronic Liver problems, cannot be neglected either. The lifestyle disorders, if not treated, can cause havoc, changing the entire dynamics of a person's life.

Many lifestyle disorders occur because of the occupation we are in (Occupational lifestyle disorders). Children, who are supposed to indulge in more physical activities and outdoor games, are happy fidgeting around with their favourite gadgets. Fast foods have long replaced the healthy, nutritious foods. Children as young as you can imagine, appear to be obese or diabetic. Stress and anxiety can also trigger a number of lifestyle disorders. Thus, getting to the root cause is an important deciding factor for an effective treatment.
Homeopathy does not treat a disease or an ailment superficially. It believes in curing the patient in a disease rather than a disease in the patient. Homeopathic treatment has a more holistic approach. It takes the miasms (hereditary or acquired) into consideration while dealing with a particular symptom. The homeopathic medicines are mainly prepared by dynamization or potentisation. This greatly minimizes the toxic and harmful effects of the drug (crude), thereby increasing the inherent curative effectiveness of the medicines. Thus, the homeopathic medicines have negligible or no side effects.
Diseases like diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism or depression can be successfully treated and cured with homeopathy. In addition to treating the disease, homeopathic medicines go a long way to improve and enhance the patient's overall immune system. The improved immune system works effectively to keep a lot of diseases at bay. Homeopathy ensures that a person's physical, mental and emotional well being is well taken care off. This greatly helps to treat and control a number of stress related disorders. Homeopathy cannot work miracles. Treating a disease from the grass root level can be time consuming. With homeopathic treatment, one needs to have patience.

Homeopathic treatment, if followed diligently can help in the treatment of a number of lifestyle disorders. To know more about homeopathy and its route of action, click on the link below.
