Best Diet to overcome PCOS

I am Daksha Punse, I am consulting dietician at 'all about diet'.  All about diet is an online platform where we provide online consultancy for healthy weight loss dieting. We have helped thousands of people across globe to achieve their weight loss target and changed the lifestyle of people suffering from PCOS, diabetes, hypertension, thyroid, etc. Today we are going to talk about PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome). Today one in 3 woman suffer from PCOS. It’s a condition in which woman’s levels of sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone are out of balance and leads to the formation of ovarian cyst these are benign masses on the ovaries. This may cause problems with women’s menstrual cycle, fertility, cardiac function and appearance as well.

PCOS is a genetic hormonal disorder which is related to diabetes, it is something with which you are born with. Symptoms typically start appearing usually after puberty, or in few cases not until you are in 30s or 40s. It is myth that PCOS has no cure but the fact is there are treatments that help in improve your health and fertility. Losing weight is one of the most important things you can do. You may be given chlomiphene citrate that will help your body produce more FSH. If you are insulin resistant you may be given a drug called metformin or gluphage that will improve your insulin sensitivity. Depending on the other symptoms that you may have you may be given medications for acne and excess hair growth too.

The fact is losing as little as 5% of your body weight will help you balance your hormonal levels and ovulate normally and bring back your fertility. Because of the way insulin is processed in many women with PCOS, a diet which is low in glycemic index is the most beneficial way to lose weight. You can do certain modifications in your diet for weight loss. Reduce the calories, stick to 1500 k/cal diet. Reduce intake of simple sugars, add more complex sugars to your diet. Increase fiber. Aim for fruits, vegetables and salads. Increase lean protein. And stop eating fatty foods such as pastries, pastas, cakes, biscuits etc. Other than that don’t stress and exercise regularly.

Health Constitution - 6 Tips That Will Help You Stay Fit!

People who rarely fall ill and are able to undertake strenuous tasks are said to have a strong constitution. When talking in terms of health, constitution refers to a person’s physical and mental strength. The stronger your constitution, the healthier you are. Having a strong constitution also makes treatment more effective in case you do fall ill. Here are a few tips to help build a strong constitution.

  1. Eat a well-balanced diet: Missing out on important nutrients may not have immediate effects, but in the long run, will cause deficiencies and harm your constitution. Not following a healthy diet is also one of the most common reasons for reduced immunity. In a day you must eat 2-3 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables and at least one serving of carbs and proteins.
  2. Drink plenty of water: It isn’t enough to give your body all the nutrients it requires, you must also drink plenty of water so that your body can absorb these nutrients. Water plays an important role in every process of the body from the digestive system to the circulatory system. Water also helps eliminate wastes and toxins from your body.
  3. Avoid processed foods: Processed foods have very little nutritional value but have a high fat content. Jams, packaged juices, breads, cakes etc. are packed with additional sugar that lead to weight gain and other problems associated with it. Instead, snack on fruits and nuts and drink freshly squeezed juice.
  4. Exercise daily: Exercise not only helps you regulate your weight, it also helps tone and strengthen muscles. Exercise also makes a person more flexible and boosts the immune system. Ideally, exercise outdoors early in the morning for half an hour a day but if that isn’t possible, break up your workout into smaller sections. Simple ways of incorporating exercise in your daily life are to use the stairs instead of the elevator or walk short distances.
  5. Meditate: Your mental health is as important as your physical health. Stress has a huge impact on your health and daily meditation is an easy way to deal with everyday stresses. Set aside time at the beginning of each day to quietly meditate and ready your mind for the day’s tasks.
  6. Get adequate sleep: Your body uses the time you are asleep to rebuild muscles and repair tissues. A person should ideally have an uninterrupted sleep of 8 hours a day. Sleep deficiency can lower your immunity, cause irritability and mood swings etc. To ensure you get a good night’s sleep, create and follow a sleep routine of going to bed and waking up the same time every day. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dietitian-nutritionist.

Is a Fruit Diet Ideal for Weight Loss?

Is a Fruit Diet Ideal for Weight Loss?

Weight loss is an issue that usually confuses a lot of people. What kind of diet should one follow? How much exercise and what kind should one indulge in? What are the other measures one can take? These are some of the questions that people usually have. While your dietary intake has a major bearing on your weight loss journey, the kind of diet you follow also makes a difference. There are many kinds of diets out there for weight loss, and one of them is a fruit diet. Is this ideal and effective? Let us find out.

  • Nutrition in Fruit: While fruits have high nutrition value, they are also high in fibre and natural glucose. Fruits also have high water content which will leave you feeling full for a long time. Yet, once the effect wears off, you will end up feeling hungry and will find yourself consuming more food that is energy dense and calorific as well. Also, much of this food group has plenty of sugar which may need a balance of vegetables and grains to burn off the excess glucose.
  • Sustained Weight Loss: The initial effects of a fruit diet may show you fabulous results. The fibre pushes the food through the digestive pipe faster, and you find yourself consuming more and more fruits for a slimmer waist. Yet, when it is not coupled with exercise, you may end up gaining all those kilos or pounds back once you stop the fruit diet because your body will not know what to do unless it gets that dose of fibre.
  • Balanced Diet: While fruits offer you all kinds of nutrients, there is a need to turn to other food groups as well so that your body keeps its immunity in place and also gets nourished by all other food groups. As per dieticians, any diet that sticks to one food group only is known as a fad diet, which does not show sustainable results.
  • Monotony: A sluggish metabolism is usually the end result of a digestive disorder or a single food diet. The same type of food is known to drive the metabolism to a state of relative complacency and it may end up slowing down to a point where you find it difficult to move those last 5 kgs or last few out pounds off of your waist.

While there are several kinds of diets that may suit several types of people and their varied bodies and metabolic rates, it is also a fact that a balanced diet is something that does wonders for your metabolism rate and keeps it going with the influx of different kinds of food.

No time to eat? Negative effects of skipping a meal

No time to eat? Negative effects of skipping a meal

No time to eat? Negative effects of skipping a meal

Skipping a meal has become a common phenomenon among most working people. You tend to miss breakfast on off days or skip dinner since you are too tired or sleepy. Skipping meal once in a while may not have any serious effects although making a habit out of it can alter your body metabolism. The way your body reacts to skipped meals varies depending on your age, diet and health. Here are a few negative effects skipping a meal can have on your body-

1. Low brain function

There are times when you choose to compensate for a heavy meal you had by skipping another altogether. Your body weakens even if you skip one meal and subsequently your brain can’t function actively and you tend to lose your focus. The brain runs on glucose primarily, hence you can’t think clearly because of low blood sugar level due to skipping a meal. It worsens in case you have made a regular habit out of it.

2. Mood swings and stress

Mood swings and irritable attitude is very common in case you are starving yourself. Due to low blood sugar level in your body you tend to snap and get easily annoyed. The symptoms worsen if you make it a habit. You tend to get more stressed and face trouble in making decisions. Skipping meals regularly can make you really moody and jittery all the time. You tend to have angry outbursts in situations where you would otherwise deal tactfully.

3. More chances of overeating

Fasting increases the chances of overeating. You may choose to skip a meal as a compensatory act but there are more possibilities that you will end up binging later. Denying your body the appropriate amount of food only makes it crave for more. Most of the times you are likely to end up eating junk food and make up for the skipped meal. It’s best to eat proper nutritious meals than loading up on junk food.

4. Gaining weight

There are high chances of gaining pounds if you skip a meal routinely. You tend to overeat usually when your body feels deprived and gives you hunger pangs. If you restrict yourself too much then it interferes with your body metabolism. Your body goes in a survival mode and starts storing everything you consume as fat. That way whatever you eat adds to your waistline and does not do much good.
