Sir I have recent stammering problem what can I do fr it to cure. What is its treatment?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a neurologist evaluation.

There is no medicine for stammering as its not a disease. Stammering is psychogenic in most of the cases. See a speech therapist.

Hi Am sorry to hear your situation. Can understand is quite nerve wrecking n embarrassing to say the least. My dear. Every cloud has a silver lining n so has urs .as you get into trouble only when you face difficult situations. Yes you have stammering which only surfaces in anxiety provoking situations as described by u. Why not control the anxiety first. Naa rahega baans .na bajegi baansuri .if you get what I mean. Pls Google rcpsych social anxiety to know more about your condition n then see a good Psychiatrist. Yes speech therapy n public speaking courses will definitely help you but in my view it is also important to work at the root of your problem. Hope this helps. Rgds.

Dear lybrate user. Your symptoms are suggestive of you being in major depression. A person when in major depression has low neurotransmitters like serotonin in brain and thus is very difficult for him to motivate himself. He has a negative attribution style for almost everything around him which is similar to what you are having and yes you seem to have other risk factors of being unmarried and jobless. Lack of confidence and interest are further hurdels to motivate self for social interactions. I would suggest you to consult a psychiatrist and get started on medications as soon as possible. Gradually over time cbt and other life changes may be brought about. With medications you will start feeling better by say 10 to 15 days from the start. I hope you take the step in right directions and get better soon. Take care.

Dear Shrividya, Welcome to lybrate. Stammering is "speaking with sudden involuntary pauses and a tendency to repeat the initial letters of words" or "say something with difficulty, repeating the initial letters of words and with sudden involuntary pauses". Stammering could be due to two reasons. First reason is Vocal cord misalignment. Second is Psychological performance anxiety. First of all you should consult an ENT Specialist and evaluate your vocal chords. If there is problem, ENT specialist will be able to correct it. If there is no problem with your vocal chords, You should consult a psychologist for stammer therapy. Take care.

Hi, I am sorry to say there are no proved medicines for stammering but practicing fluent talking methods like speaking slow and monitoring your stammering. You need to be patient and practice the guidelines given by your speech pathologist. You may do the following: 1. Speaking slow (not low volume but less speed) 2. Reading slow (not low volume but less speed) thanks.

Stress and Stuttering - How to Deal with It?

MD, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Stress and Stuttering - How to Deal with It?

Stuttering is a type of speech disorder wherein, a person speaks slower than normal. It is quite  common in the age group of 3 to 8. The relationship between stress and stuttering has been pondered over for decades now. A lot of people seem to believe that stress and stuttering are co-related. On the contrary, recent studies show that stress is more of a consequence rather than a cause of stuttering. If you take the first theory into consideration, then according to that, children would be the greatest victims of anxiety and stress. But it is seen that the level of stress increases proportionately with the increase in age.

Social anxiety in teenagers increases due to stuttering, when they come across individuals who can speak in a normal pace. This in turn can crush their self confidence and lead them to isolate themselves from social groups and people in general. Hence, it is important to deal with stuttering in the early ages or as and when it occurs.

Sometimes stuttering can develop due to physical or mental trauma.  Most people with stuttering do not seek therapy for it because they might not think of it to be too severe. Little do they realise that a simple process of speech therapy can help them overcome this disability and rejuvenate their level of self-confidence.

It has also come to light, that people with relapse in stuttering post therapy has shown a three-fold increase in anxiety levels than normal. Hence we cannot ignore the strong relationship between stress and stuttering. So from the above evidence, it is safe to conclude that social anxiety or stress develops as a result of chronic stuttering.

How to deal with stress related to stuttering?

Seeking help is a great start to tackle your disability. If your stuttering is prominent enough to warrant therapy, you must seek professional help for the same. You must also learn to control your anxiety by dismissing any anxious thought or make sincere efforts in controlling physical anxiety.

You can also try to increase your social skills by participating in events, such as public speaking that can reduce your stress levels and make yourself more confident about yourself. One must also remember that a person is defined by what he does rather than what he says. So never let a minor disability come in the way of your self worth!

You need to go for thyroid testing, as this is the main organ which deals in the small muscles of larynx, secondly this may be due to the dryness in the mouth as this can be improved by taking iron diet properly, and milk products.

Surely there is solution. Presently you both are" talking" but you both are not" listening" what the other person has to say. Typically with newly married couples, what happens is, both have certain expectations from their spouse, but they do not voice these expectations and expect their spouse to" understand" it on their own. At the same time, what meaning each person is making from the other's actions/remarks also differs - e. G. If the wife says" why are you late again today? the husband thinks she is suspicious or nagging. But what she actually wants to convey is" I want you to come back on time, so that I can spend more time with you" and if the wife is talking to her husband and if the husband is busy watching tv or reading news paper, the wife assumes that she is not important for him, tv/paper is more important, which may not be so. So please remember that most of the relationship issues are because of lack of communication and listening skills. You both please try to learn some communications and listening skills. Learn to express your needs and understand other's needs. It will help you a lot. In the absence of good communication and listening skills, you both will not be able to have any other good relationship. Even if you both decide to leave each other now, you will have similar problems later on, with another person. So the best way is, to understand and accept that you both have come from different homes/backgrounds so you will have clashes because you will have different opinions, perceptions, values expectations etc. If required talk to a counsellor. You both need to work together to make this relationship work. All the best.

Sir. I have stammering problem. Can you give me some tips for speech therapy ? Or can tell me any medicines for it? If any present.

MPHIL, M A PSYCHOLOGY
Psychologist, Chennai
Stammering is a speech disorder which affects your and personality. I can understand it has been giving you lot of anxiety and doubts. What you need is a therapist who can retrain the way you speak. As a start I would like you to read aloud as much as possible by taking each letter of a word at a time. L- e- t - t - e - r. Llllllllllll. Each word should extended as much as you can. This should continue for half an hour daily. Then you need to do relaxation exercises. After practicing this for one week. I will tell you next step.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Speech therapist uses proven and on sight voice box exercises with the help of modern machines and equipment. Nothing matches their expertise. I request you to consult a speech therapist for once and see what opinion he has. Then we can see how things can be done. Take care.

It's a very comman problem. You need to practice at home with your friends, and go ahead. Just do it once and the fear will disappear. It's not a speech problem.

Jab bolta hu to meri aawaj bahut karak and fati fati aati h. M aaisa kya kru ki mera gala thik hojae and awaj thik hojaye.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS

Breathe deeply and exhale on a hisssssssing sound. Repeat 10 times. Proper breathing is the foundation for a healthy voice AND control over nervous energy that can make the voice quiver. Say “Mm-mmm (as in yummy) Mmm-hmm (like yes) ” Repeat 5 times. This develops mask resonance, which creates a clean and vibrant sound by creating a clean approximation of the cords and a resonance that will sound great and project easily. Say “Mm-mmm. Mmm-hmm.” up and down your vocal range, from low to middle to high and back again, 10 times.
