I have been stuttering for some years now. At times it is just normal but at times it seems to get bad. Pl recommend a homeopathy medicine for the same.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS

Stammering can be made lesser only and only by speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, i'd suggest you to visit a psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. People may make fun of this but believe me, slowly you'll get better at it. Hope your query is answered. Wishing you good health.

I am a stutterer and also feel a low confidence ,main cause of this stuttering is low level of confidence and anxiety, I am a medical student ,so how can I get rid of this problem?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

Yes. Stammer may be caused by stress and tension. Take relaxation training from a psychologist plus you do pranayaam as taught by baba ramdev on astha channel 5.30 to 7 am. Very very effective- esp anulom-vilom, bramri and udgit are a must. You will get miraculous results!

I have suddenly developed blocked vocal cord from the last day. I am unable to speak properly. Neither my tonsils nor my pharynx is inflamed. Why can't I speak properly?

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)
Psychiatrist, Davanagere
Good Morning ~ If you have been shouting very much lately or speaking in loud voices you may have aseptic laryngitis which is usually the case of loss of voice. However, it is temporary and usually gets better with voice rest, steam inhalation and soothing lozenges. You can start speaking properly in a couple of days, if it persists beyond that please consult with an otorhinolaryngologist or an ENT specialist.

What are vocal nodules. Are they common? Is it common with teachers? How often it will take to heal? What are the treatments of it?

MD - Homeopathy, BHMS
Homeopath, Vadodara
it is an extra growth on the vocal cords.. because of over use of voice... like in singers and teachers... With proper homoeopathic treatment it should not take more than 6 months... But you will have to consult with more details...

hi, I can understand your feelings. But if the doctors are suggesting that your problem is irreversible then don't fight with it. Just accept it. You have tried your best. Now it's time to concentrate on your strength not on your weakness. Find a job which is suitable to your present health condition. Now a days many options are available. Keep Helen Keller or Prof. Stephen Hawking's example in your mind. When they can why can't you. All the best regards Sunita

stammering could be due to physical problems like vocal chord problems or due to psychological problems. First consult an ent specialist to make sure it is not the case. Take care.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. I suggest you should not worry much about your voice because it can be changed upto an extent even if you go for surgery. I suggest you to just leave it like that and be proud of what positives you have. Just for some change, you may consult a speech therapist. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. Stammering is" speaking with sudden involuntary pauses and a tendency to repeat the initial letters of words" or" say something with difficulty, repeating the initial letters of words and with sudden involuntary pauses" stammering could be due to two reasons. First reason is vocal cord misalignment. Second is psychological performance anxiety. First of all you should consult an ent specialist and evaluate your vocal chords. If there is problem, ent specialist will be able to correct it. If there is no problem with your vocal chords, you should consult a psychologist for stammer therapy. Take care.

And stammer every word. Normally when I speak with my friends, family members, known people, I speak fluently, there is no lagging in my speaking. I don't know what type of problem is it? Dear lybrate-user: I have gone through your narrative of the problem you have been experiencing. Yes, as you mentioned this is a form of anxiety (social anxiety). Although you might experience a sort of helplessness because of the embarrassment, you need to understand that this is not a serious psychological problem. This is a treatable condition; and with proper treatment, you can be completely relieved from these symptoms Treatment may consist of psychotherapy or a combination of medication and psychotherapy. If you are in Bangalore, you may set up an appointment for Monday June 12th so that detailed assessment may be done prior to advising the course of treatment. You may contact Lybrate regarding the appointment or further guidance / referral.

Write down small sentences and read it aloud when alone at home. Keep doing this at least for a month. Also read a few paragraphs from books, magazines and news paper, aloud while alone. It will give you some practice to talk consistently and your language skills will also improve. Try reciting sanskrit shlokas which will train your tongue. You may also consult a speech therapist.
