Spotting - 4 Things It Can Indicate!

MBBS, MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Kanpur
Spotting - 4 Things It Can Indicate!

Spotting can be stated as a form of mild bleeding from the vagina. It is similar to a period, but it is much lighter and can occur in between your periods. Most women who are pregnant and are in their first trimester experience spotting. In fact, spotting is often seen as one of the early signs of pregnancy.

Spotting can happen because of any of the following reasons:

  1. Cysts in the uterus can cause spotting
  2. Though very rare, a thyroid problem can also lead to spotting
  3. Any infection in the cervix or uterine cancer can also cause spotting
  4. Lastly, hormonal imbalance can also cause spotting

What can spotting signify?
Spotting is completely normal and there is no need to be worried if it happens on account of any of the following reasons.

  1. Light spotting at the end of the bleeding period during the menstrual cycle is common.
  2. Spotting can also occur during ovulation; in fact, seeing some spots of blood when one is ovulating, is often considered as an excellent sign of fertility.
  3. Mild spotting can also develop after sex, especially if it is for the first time, owing to the hymen getting ruptured
  4. Mild spotting if one is on birth control pills is also normal.

When should you be worried?

  1. Spotting is an early sign of pregnancy and if you are not planning to conceive any time soon, then you must visit your gynaecologist.
  2. Spotting may also be a symptom of any STD, primarily Chlamydia or Gonorrhea.
  3. As spotting could also be indicative of cancer, it’s advisable to not delay and visit the gynaecologist immediately.

As I am in 3rd semester on my pregnancy. So pls provide me the food intake chart.
1. Proteins: Especially essential during 3rd trimester (7th to 9th months of pregnancy). for growth, repair of muscle, skin, hair and body tissues. Protein deficiency leads to low immunity, hairfall, feeling of tiredness. Proteins are not stored in our body as any excess protein is converted to energy or fat. (a) Major protein sources: Egg white(white portion), Milk, Soybeans/Soymilk, Fish, Cheese, Tofu. (b) Other protein sources: Beans with wheat, Nuts, Curd, Yogurt (Dahi) 2.Carbohydrates Our main source of energy. Stored in liver and muscles. Carbohydrates are used the most by our body duringexercise. Hence, it is important during pregnancy to consume a diet rich in carbohydrates. (a) Instant/rapid carbohydrates energy sources: Banana, Milk, Sweets, Sugarcane juice. (b) Slow carbohydrates energy sources: Beans, Bread, Cereals, Potato, Pulses, Rice. 3.Iron : Especially essential during 6th to 8th months of pregnancy). Helps in production of haemoglobin and transportation of oxygen to blood cells. 1. Largest mineral found in our blood which also helps in producing energy. . 2. If taking Iron and Vitamin C supplements, do not take them at the same time but after a gap of about 3 hours. Taking Vitamin C tablet helps in absorbing iron. Sources of Iron: 1. Vegetables: Spinach, Dark green leafy vegetables, Lentils(Daal). 2. Fruits: Avocados(Makhanphal), Peach(Adau), Pear(Nashpati), Pumpkin(Kaddu), Raisin(Kishmish), Pomegranate(Anaar). 3. Food: Eggs, Fish, Meat, Cereals, Almonds(Badam), Whole wheat bread, Soybean. 4.CALCIUM 1. Helps form strong bones, teeth, healthy gums, muscle growth and prevents muscle cramps. 2. Taking a small dose an hour before bedtime helps achieve sound sleep. Sources of Calcium: 1. Vegetables: Cabbage, Dark green leafy vegetables, Broccoli, Figs(anjeer), Flax seeds(San Beej). Food: Eggs, Milk, Dairy products, Yogurt(Dahi), Almonds(Badam), Soybeans/Soymilk.

Hello, If you are breastfeeding, then you are unlikely to be pregnant as it acts as a natural contraception. However, do a urine pregnancy test to be double sure. Also, use contraception next time during intercourse for at least two years to avoid pregnancy.

Lybrate-user your body's proportion is not good: start taking something natural and have a will to improve your health without medicines, for thyroid start drinking coriander juice (50 gram), make a paste and boil in water, then when its bit colder drink it regularly in morning empty stomach, after 45 minutes eat" triphla" chooran with luke warm water than 45 minutes later have breakfast, triphla will help you reduce your weight. For menses problem start drinking cow milk and put 1 table spoon cow ghee in it, you will never have any ladies problem in you life. Bleeding might not be coming due to lack of blood, get your hemoglobin check, drink fresh juices, eat lots of green vegetables, avoid fast food.

I have adopted a new born child and I want to feed my child. I have read an article on net about induced lactation. I did not got pregnancy for a single time. Is it possible in my case? Please guide me about induced lactation.

I have adopted a new born child and I want to feed my child. I have read an article on net about induced lactation. I...
Yes, induced lactation is possible, but it requires a lot of preparation (six months) and hormonal therapy. Since you have already brought the baby home, time is short and the baby needs immediate nourishing. Today we have excellent formula milks (lactogen 1&2 etc) which you may give to the baby. Remember to wean the baby away from milk from 4 months onwards. After 6 months milk alone is not sufficient and the baby should be taking solid food. Cooked softly.

If you have sex when she is in 12th-16th day of menses (when menses started is counted as first day), and she has not taken pills, chances of her getting pregnant are very high. If it is 8th-11thday of 17th-20th day of menses pregnancy may or may not occur. Risk is there. If it is1st to 7th day or 21st to 28th day of her menses, there are no chances of her getting pregnant. In future use safe period 1st to 7th day of menses or 21st to 28th day of menses if she has 28 days cycle.(if she has 26 or 30 days cycle calculations would change). If do have intercourse from 8th day to 20th day, use condom or today or i-pill.
