Why Do People Need A Heart Transplant?

DM - Cardiology, MD, MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
Cardiologist, Ghaziabad
Why Do People Need A Heart Transplant?

There are many people worldwide who suffer from heart problems (irrespective of their age and sex). While in most cases, the condition improves with proper treatment and medications, in few, the condition is beyond treatment. A heart transplant comes as a savior for such people. It gives them a new lease of life. The transplant involves replacing a heart that has stopped functioning normally (damaged or may be diseased) with a healthy heart (from the donor).

Over the years, heart transplant has undergone a sea of change. With the advancement of science and technology, the success rate in a heart transplant has seen an exponential rise.

People who need a heart transplant:
A heart transplant may be essential in the following cases.

  • A congenital heart disorder (a person born with a heart problem).
  • Defective or diseased heart valves.
  • Amyloidosis (a condition where amyloid fibrils get deposed in the tissues and organs of the body intracellularly or extracellularly).
  • Problems in the coronary artery.
  • Cardiomyopathy (A condition where the muscles of the heart become weak, thereby affecting the normal functioning of the heart).
  • A heart transplant that failed previously.
  • Ventricular Arrhythmias (a condition that originates in the ventricles, in ventricular arrhythmias, the heart rhythms are abnormally rapid).

However, under the following circumstances, a heart transplant may not be a wise idea

  • People with infections or chronic lung or kidney disorders.
  • A case of cancer in the past.
  • Age may be a deciding factor. The recovery from a heart transplant may not be 100% in an aged person.

The heart transplant procedure:
The first step in heart transplant is the availability of a suitable donor. In this case, a donor is a person whose brain is dead but the other organs, including the heart, is healthy and functioning properly. A surgeon performs three operations in a heart transplant.

  • The first operation is essentially the removal of the healthy heart from the donor body. The heart is kept in a cool place, preferably ice (to keep the heart alive and in good condition until the heart transplant takes place).
  • In the second operation, the recipient's damaged or diseased heart is operated out.The situation may, however, be complicated if the patient had a heart surgery in the past.
  • The third and the final surgery involves implanting the donor heart into the recipient body (the recipient's upper heart chambers and the atrial back wall are however not removed).
  • Once the implantation takes place (without any complications), the surgeons sew the heart into place.
  • The blood vessels are then connected back to the heart and the lungs. The heart starts beating again once it is warmed up.
  • To enable the patient to receive the nutrients and oxygen (during the heart transplant), the patient is put on a heart-lung machine.
  • If no complications develop after the transplant, the patient is discharged within a fortnight.

In some unfortunate cases, there may be organ rejection. The condition arises when the recipient's immune cells see the transplanted heart as non-self (foreign agents). If left unattended, it may damage the heart. Immunosuppressant drugs can help avert the rejection. However, it is important to monitor the patient closely for any infections that may arise to the administration of the immunosuppressants. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

What is the best way to gain weight and have a fit body what food supplement is the best? Please advice.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

What is the best way to gain weight and have a fit body what food supplement is the best? Please advice.
Gaining weight is as difficult as losing it, if you are naturally thin. Skinny people complain that they can't put on any weight. If you want to build up weight, don't just eat high-calorie junk foods and rely on unnecessary supplements. Choose foods that are energy-dense and nutrient-dense whenever possible. Following are some tips to follow to increase your weight. You will take some time to gain the weight you need, but be patient. 1. If you have a rapid metabolism, then you must increase your daily intake of healthy foods (increase your intake of carbohydrates) to compensate for the rate at which you burn energy. Eat six smaller meals a day You should also eat more energy dense foods like healthy oils, dry fruits, seeds, nuts, pulses, etc. along with some starchy foods like potatoes, cereals, bread, pasta, rice, etc. 2. Consume more calories than you burn. Choose healthy calorie-dense food to add calories. Drink healthy beverages to add calories. Mangoes are rich in calories and carbohydrates, include them in your diet. 3. Eat healthy food frequently, 5-6 times a day - 3 larger meals and 3 smaller meals alternately. Separate them by at least 3 hours so you can digest each meal fully. Don't go without food for 5-6 hours after having a major meal. For example, if you wish to consume 3000 calories a day, you may eat 3 larger meals of about 650 calories and 3 smaller meals of about 450 calories. 4. Have a balanced diet. 5. Exercise regularly for putting on weight. Some thin people think that exercise is not good for them. This is not true, it keeps the metabolism high. Remember that eating alone is not sufficient. You don't want to gain fat but lean mass, so exercise is important. Resistance training exercises will help to increase your muscle mass, which in turn will increase metabolism. Learn to distinguish between weight gaining exercises and weight loss exercises. Note that if you do not get enough amino acids during exercise, the existing muscle may break down. Amino acids come from protein foods so you should eat such foods after exercise. Keep in mind that excessive exercise without putting back the energy you have used will not help you to put on weight.

Can't Stick To Your Diet? Quick Tips That Can Help You Get Back!

A healthy, balanced diet is important for any person for leading a healthy life. However, it is quite likely for you to get bored with the same dietary pattern. Here are some changes you can make to your regular healthy diet to make it more interesting.

  1. Change your way of cutting: Cutting the vegetables for your salad in the same way using your chopping board makes your diet look boring. You can change the way you cut the vegetables to make it more exciting. You can try stick forms, grating and shaving techniques instead of regular chopping. You can also food-process the vegetables to change their texture.

  2. Add your own ingredients to existing salad recipes: You may try adding cooked vegetables with raw vegetables, by chopping each vegetable into a different pattern. A simple change in the cutting technique and mixing some vegetables will make your meals more attractive.

  3. Dressings, Dips and Sauces: Dips and sauces are one of the best ways to liven up your meals. You can add any kind of fresh dip, sauce or dressing to a vegetable meal. This would transform the entire taste of the meal. Mixing varieties of dips will enable you to create tastier and creamier dips, which can be used in many ways. Dips enable you to lead a healthy lifestyle along with tasty meals. Dips and sauces can be used as a salad topping or dressing, can be applied over hot vegetables and be used in various other forms. They also make the meal more bulky. Such dips can be prepared at home or can be bought from stores. You can carry them while you travel to enjoy extra tasty but healthy meals everywhere you go.

  4. Try new food items: Experimenting with ingredients and introducing new foods in your diet add variety and cut the monotony. You should try ingredients which you never used before. There are lots of different fruits and vegetables in the market to choose from. You should visit different grocery stores, markets and gourmet stores in order to find new food items. Nowadays, a huge variety of fruits and vegetables is available.

  5. Use Herbs and Spices: You can totally change the look of a meal by adding fresh herbs or spices. Using different herbs and spices enables you to change the taste of existing recipes. Herbs such as mint, coriander, basil, parsley and others can enhance your salad’s taste. Spices blend in all kinds of preparations to produce new taste and smell. Try different spices and herbs to get delightful results.

You can spice up your regular healthy meals in many different ways. This makes your meals tastier and more attractive.

Hair fall and hyper pigmentation are interlinked. This is the indication of hormonal fluctuation in body. It is important to understand this and then treat it. Hair is part of body so treat it from within. Consult trichologist.

Suffering From Back Problems - 6 Things That Are Good For You!

Suffering From Back Problems - 6 Things That Are Good For You!

Today ‘working’ usually implies sitting at a desk from morning to evening. While this may seem more comfortable than working in the fields, sitting at a desk can trigger a host of back problems. This is because sitting in the same position all day makes the spine bend forward and lowers the efficiency of the back muscles. Working at a desk not only strains your back, but also restricts your movements to typing on a keyboard and moving a mouse.

Once a back problem begins, it usually lasts a lifetime hence; here are a few tips to save your back.

  1. Get yourself a good chair: Your chair is crucial to your back’s health. Avoid the hard backed plastic chairs and pick a more flexible mesh backed office chair if you sit at the table for a long span of time. Ergonomic chairs may seem expensive, but are worth the expense in the long run.
  2. Stretch your muscles: Sitting in the same position all day, puts the muscles under stress and with time can constrict the muscles. Make it appoint to stand up every 30 minutes and stretch your back and sides. Also try rotating your hips and shoulders form time to time.
  3. Take a break: No matter how much work you have in front of you, take a break at the end of each hour. Taking even 2 minutes off out of 60 every hour can have a huge impact on your health. If you still feel guilty skip using the phone to connect with your colleague and walk over to their desks instead.
  4. Get a pedometer: Keeping a pedometer will help you track the number of steps taken in a day. Ideally, a person should take 10,000 steps a day to stay healthy. If you sit at a desk for majority of the day, take every opportunity you can to up the count on your pedometer. Go for a walk around your office after lunch or park your car a little way off from the office to create opportunities to walk.
  5. Take the stairs: As far as possible avoid escalators and elevators. Instead climb stairs for a quick workout. If your office is on the 20th floor, walking up may not be feasible, but you could get off the elevator on the 18th floor and walk up the remaining two floors.
  6. Eat healthy: Lastly, pay attention to what you eat. Avoid eating at the office canteen or picking up a bite at the coffee shop and carry lunch from home. This ensures that you eat a balanced meal.

I have been living in the UK for the past four years. Ever since I've come back to my home which is in India, my stomach has been constantly upset, even though I'm eating home cooked clean food. Can you suggest the possible reasons for my problem and a solution please? Do you reckon it might be the water that I drink here?

First change your diet, lifestyle and also your Dr. who has no knowledge on nutrition the problem may be in the water ,wheat, cooking oil ,milk and chemicals inside your home Your Gut is the gateway to health. All diseases begin in the gut because of faulty eating and lifestyle habits and produce symptoms elsewhere. Do not blindly believe your drs. They may have vested interests since they get bribes from drug companies. The lab results may be fine but you are not fine because your doctor has focused only on the Gastrointestinal system without focusing on the whole patient Antibiotics, Pain killers ,Antidepressants, Fast foods, refined oils kill your Gut ecosystem which kill the good bacteria and cause overgrowth of the bad bacteria. Which create havoc by triggering inflammation which is the root cause of all lifestyle diseases like BP, DM, high lipids, Obesity ,Thyroid disease ,Anxiety, Cancer, etc. Do not eat outside foods .They are causing lot of gut diseases like IBS, IBD,Cancers in the younger generation who are addicted to these foods and modern medicine can only provide band aid. Modern medicine is good only for acute care. Lifestyle diseases which is a epidemic now responds to nutrition and lifestyle changes only. If you still have the symptoms then they have not addressed the root cause and you are left with no other option other than Dr. shopping. Take Consult if you want to find out the root cause and fix your health problem by lifestyle and nutrition by sending feedback with name and phone number. You need 1) detailed dietary ,eating and lifestyle habits history taking. High end investigations like MRI scan without detailed history taking is the wrong approach. 2) Comprehensive lab testing-which should include tests for inflammation and which focuses on your whole body and not only the gut. 3) detailed lifestyle & dietary advice based on the results For all diseases diet has to be fixed first before medication which may not be needed always. Remember You cannot fix your health without fixing your diet because all diseases begin in the gut only.

Hi. I am 24 years old and unmarried.
I am not pregnant but today suddenly I saw a drop of milk came out of my nipple....
Hi, Sometimes, milky secretion fromm the nipples is seen in some unmarried and non-pregnant ladies due to harmonal imbalance or severe stress. Please check your serum prolactin levels and get an U/S scan of the breasts done to rule out any pathology. Consult a breast specialist for further management.

It could be because you are hyperthyroid. Get your thyroid profile tested. Gain weight healthily by eating 5-6 meals a day, even if they are slightly smaller than usual. Make sure each meal includes healthy, calorie-dense foods like nuts and full-fat dairy, as they will help you gain more weight without feeling too full. If you don’t feel like you can eat more, drink liquid calories like 100% juices or smoothies because, since they tend to be less filling than food, they allow you to consume more calories overall. Eat healthy foods that are calorie-dense. When you're trying to gain weight it's important to maximize the amount of calories you can consume with each meal and snack. Calorie-dense foods are items that are high in calories per serving.Consume these foods with each meal and snack. Calorie dense foods to incorporate into your diet include: nuts and nut butters, avocados, full-fat dairy products (cheese, yogurt and milk), butter and oil, and eggs. Also use full-fat condiments like regular mayonnaise, full-fat cream cheese or full-fat salad dressings. Not all high-fat foods are healthy or appropriate to eat more frequently or in larger quantities. Minimize these foods: fast food, deep fried foods, candy, and high-fat processed meats (bologna or hot dogs). If you're eating multiple times throughout the day, you may feel more full. This may lead to smaller meals instead of several large meals. Even when meals/snacks are small, if they are calorie dense, they can help induce weight gain. Add extra calories to meals and recipes. In addition to eating more calorie dense foods, you can also increase calories in your favorite meals and recipes. Adding extra foods or using higher calorie ingredients in your recipes is an easy way to bulk up your total calories. The more of a caloric punch you can add to meals, the more calories you'll consume over a given day and week. In recipes, use full-fat dairy products or dried milk in soups, stews or casseroles calling for water. Drizzle extra olive oil or add an extra pat of butter to salads, steamed vegetables, soups and casseroles. Top lower calorie foods with high-calorie toppings. For example, top whole milk yogurt with nuts and granola or top your salad with full-fat shredded cheese and sunflower seeds. Perform strength training activities. Strength training can aid in your weight gain. As you build lean muscle mass, you may notice your weight increases. This is highly important when attempting to gain weight. Many people do not realize that exercise is crucial to weight gain, just as it is to weight loss. Strength training activities include: weight lifting, isometric exercises (push-ups or crunches) and Pilates. Strength training does burn calories, just not as many as aerobic activities. However, it's still important to be aware of how the calories burned during these exercises affects your weight. For medication consult online in private.
