Dear lybrate user, a kidney stone is mainly formed due to the accumulation of the minerals present in urine. Such accumulation occurs mainly due to low intake of fluids. Continuous low fluid intake results in the deposits of the minerals over the stone & eventually leads to an increase in the size of the stone. Formation of stone leads to pain along the kidney region. If the size of the kidney stone is below 3 mm then it is possible to get rid of it without any surgery. Take homoeopathic mother tincture berberis vulgaris q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water for 15 days. The stone will be expelled through urine in between the span of 15 days of medication. But if the size of the stone is more than 3 mm then you should surely go for surger.

Don't consider this to be a simple UTI as the creatinine levels are raised you need to be more concerned to check whether there is any diabetic or hypertensive nephropathy causing in raised creatinine levels. However you said because of the shooted BP she got paralyzed hence this might be the reason for altered kidney function also hence don't neglect and use home medication and instead consult your doctor and get diagnosed and treated accordingly. If you need any further advise please write back to me in detail.

Last week I undergone surgery ,thrombosed extended pile.I discharged from hospital next day.Prescriptionmedicines ,monocef ,smith cream, duphalac oral solution ,liquid paraffin I.P used.Since 3 days some seepage from my anus orange colour with smell is coming.Surgery part also not healed. Very inconvenient to me.Anus also pain around while passing stool.

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS - Urology, MBBS

Dear , This a common aftermath of surgery for prolapsed thrombosed piles. Some discharge is routine and so is pain. That will go away in due course of time. So is the case with healing. Raw area will not heal in weeks time, probably it will take 4-6 weeks depending upon the size of raw area if open surgery is done. If the discharge is foul smeling then probably you need to change antibiotics. On the whole you have nothing to worry about. Dr. Kiran Mehta.

Dear lybrate-user, since how much time you are having this symptom. Do you also have fever. Get your urine tested for routine and microscopic test and then we will plan treatment. As a home remedy you soak coriander seeds in water overnight and drink the water and chew the soaked seeds every morning. See to it you consume enough water.

Kidney Disease in Childhood

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS, FISPN & FISPN - Pediatric Nephrology
Pediatrician, Delhi
  • Kidney disease can affect children in various ways, ranging from treatable disorders without long-term consequences to life-threatening conditions.
  • Acute kidney disease develops suddenly, lasts a short time, and can be serious with long-lasting consequences, or may go away completely once the underlying cause has been treated.
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) does not go away with treatment and tends to get worse over time.

Kidney disease in children can be caused by

  • birth defects
  • hereditary diseases
  • infection
  • nephrotic syndrome
  • systemic diseases
  • trauma
  • urine blockage or reflux

A health care provider diagnoses kidney disease in children by completing a physical exam, asking for a medical history, and reviewing signs and symptoms. To confirm diagnosis, the health care provider may order one or more of the following tests:

  • urine tests
  • blood test
  • imaging studies
  • kidney biopsy

Treatment for kidney disease in children depends on the cause of the illness.

  • Children with a kidney disease that is causing high blood pressure may need to take medications to lower their blood pressure. Improving blood pressure can significantly slow the progression of kidney disease. As kidney function declines, children may need treatment for anemia and growth failure.
  • Children with kidney disease that leads to kidney failure must receive treatment to replace the work the kidneys do. The two types of treatment are dialysis and transplantation.
  • For children with CKD, learning about nutrition is vital because their diet can affect how well their kidneys work. Parents or guardians should always consult with their child’s health care team before making any dietary changes.

What are the Symptoms Associated with Pediatric Kidney Disease?

Kidney disease often goes undetected in the general population, but children and adolescents are at an even greater risk due to the nature of the causes of the diseases and the ambiguity of the symptoms.

Children might not be aware of some of the changes that are impacting their body and will not always let their parents know of potential issues.

Common symptoms for children are:

  • Swelling (even mild) of the hands and feet and/or puffiness around the eyes caused by excess fluid build-up, to the point where the child’s ability to move around normally is compromised
  • After initial swelling, socks or a belt can leave an indentation in the skin that will persist
  • Lack of or decrease in appetite.
  • In children with ESRD it is especially important to keep their appetite up because transplant eligibility is based partially on growth.
  • Decreased or increased frequency of urination. Children who can normally use the toilet without assistance may suddenly begin to wet the bed at night
  • Long-lasting changes in the color of the urine such as unusually dark or red, which can indicate blood, and changes in appearance of urine such as extra foam that can indicate protein
  • Headaches resulting from high blood pressure
  • Flu-like Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite
  • Stunted or poor growth as compared to similar age group peers
  • Difficulty concentrating and poor school performance

Another potential indicator of pediatric kidney disease is family history of kidney disease. Genetic related disease is much more common in children than in adults. If there is family history, it is a good idea to get a check-up.

In parents that are pregnant with a child with polycystic kidney disease a common symptom is decreased amniotic fluid.

Looking at the list of common symptoms it is easy to see how CKD can go undiagnosed.  As a parent or caregiver, it is important to have conversations with your children to understand the severity and duration of the symptoms and follow up with pediatric nephrologist.

Hi This is perfectly normal and natural. Frequency and quantity of urine is directly related to the amount of fluid consumed by a person. If you have some symptoms like burning or painful urination then its a matter of concern otherwise just dont worry and enjoy life.

Norma level of vit D is between between 20-50 ng/ml. A level less than 20 ng/ml indicates Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D3 is essential for healthy bone, teeth, muscle, cell growth, immunity, neuro muscular functioning and overall health. Deficiency causes ricket/osteomalacia, poor hair growth, increased risk of cancer. Treatment-Vitamin D3 60,000 unit/wk for 3 -6 months 1. Expose yourself to sunlight for 15-20 minutes daily in the morning 2. Take Milk, cheese, egg yolk, Fish (salmon/mackerel/ trout/sardines/tuna) cod liver oil, Mushroom, cereals, orange juice. 3. If you have deficiency of Vitamin D you have to take Vitamin D supplement 60000IU/week fo r 3 months after consulting physician.

Sir, it is better if you get a detailed blood test for diabetes, which includes fasting, after food sugar levels, hba1c% and lipid profile and also routine urine examination and inform the results. With those details I can guide appropriately. If diabetes is present whatever type it may be, treatment has to be started. I await your details.

Dear go syrup you are taking is simply an alkaliser and not antibiotic. It will not cure your infection on its own. It is usually given to change reaction of urine to alkaline. If urine shows more than 5 pus cells then one think of infection and then you need to take antibiotic for at least 15 days.

Dear obviously you have obstruction in your urinary tract. One has to find out where. It could be phimosis, meatal stenosis, urethral stricture or bladder neck obstruction. Cysto-urethroscopy is next logical step and if the diagnosis is confirmed then suitable surgery could be done or even medication in some cases.
