Dear Doctor Ji, I am 63 years old and I work in a private company as an accounts manager. I take medicine for high BP and blood sugar. Both are within normal range. I always carry two packets of marie biscuits and when I feel hungry I take few biscuits and water. You suggest peanuts. Salted peanuts are available but will it do any harm to my health and BP and sugar problem. Kindly confirm. Even potatoes chips are available. Please confirm.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
It would have been better if you had mentioned the blood glucose readings both fasting and pp as well as hba1c% and bp. When diabetes is in control fasting should be closer to 100 mg. Pp 150 to 160 mg or up to 180 mg and hba1c% <7. Bp should be 130/80 mm hg. As regards eating a few biscuits, let me tell you, it is better to avoid them. At the most 2 can be aeten, the reason is that all biscuits give about 30 plus calories per piece and contain simple carb, hence increasing the blood glucose rapidly. Peanuts rosted ones without salt are good about 30 g per day. Salt intake is not good for a person with high bp. Potato chips, other packaged foods, are harmful, as they contain too much of salt and trans fats. Even if one consumes peanuts those should be brought from home, packed will have salt in them. You have not mentioned the weight, so so bmi can not be calculated. It should be <23 kg/m2. Thanks.

Sometime My heart beat fast at night . Around 20 days gap. I consult Dr. . ECG normal Echo normal . Is it due to stress ? It do not happen whole day . Only at sleeping time .

General Physician, Mumbai
Dear lybrateuser, -the fast heart beat is due to stress & anxiety -to reduce stress do regular exercise like walking, jogging, swimming, outdoor games for 20-30 min a day, also do yoga, meditation & deep breathing for 10-15 min in the morning, you don't have to do these at a stretch, even short periods of 10-15 min spread over the day is beneficial -other than work occupy your mind by reading, listening to music, following a hobby, socializing with friends as these have a calming effect on the mind -eat well balanced, nutritious, home made food, avoid spicy, fried & junk food, more than 2-3 cups of tea, coffee if you take, also avoid alcohol & tobacco -have a good restful sleep for 7-8 hrs at night, for this eat your dinner 2-3 hrs before bedtime, avoid watching tv & other gadgets 1-2 hrs before bedtime, read a book or listen to music before going to bed -if still not much improvement then consult a doctor as you may require medication.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

Palpitations can be related to underlying heart disease. When they are, palpitations are more likely to represent arrhythmia. Heart conditions associated with palpitations include:------------- • Prior heart attack--------- • Coronary artery disease-------------- • Other heart problems such as congestive heart failure, heart valve problems, or heart muscle problems---------- In you case and at your age you must start doing stress management exercises especially BRAMARI PRANAYAM daily for 10 minutes and avoid habit of over eating and control on your weight but again I will suggest you to consult your doctor in person as he can only come to a correct diagnosis after physical examination.------------- Being a Homoeopath I will advise you to take following medicine alongwith which will surely help you. DIACARD (MADAUUS GERMAN) Drink 10 drops twice daily along with your present treatment-------------------

Cholesterol Level - Ayurvedic Remedies That Can Lower It!

High cholesterol has become a very common phrase nowadays. With excessive consumption of fast foods and sugar, lifestyle disorders such as diabetes and high cholesterol have become very common. In order to know what high cholesterol is, you should first know about cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a type of fat present in the body which is needed for regulating hormones in the body. It also plays an important role in Vitamin D production. Though you get cholesterol from food, the body has its own supply of cholesterol as well. Excessive cholesterol in the body can lead to cholesterol build up in your arteries, resulting in blood circulation problems. The arteries tend to narrow down, not allowing the blood to flow properly. High cholesterol levels are linked to heart problems and strokes.

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine, the treatments of which are based on natural ingredients. It is very effective and free from side effects, unlike conventional methods of treatment. Ayurvedic remedies for high cholesterol levels in the body aim to bring down the cholesterol level and improve your overall wellbeing.

The Ayurvedic tips to lower cholesterol levels are:

  1. Eat healthy: Diet plays an important role in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, so eating healthy is of paramount importance. Include plenty of vegetables and fruits in your diet to get the required amount of Vitamins and minerals in order to keep your body healthy. Avoid refined grains as they spike your blood sugar levels. Instead opt for whole grains such as brown rice.
  2. Eat healthy fats: Eat healthy fats such as unsaturated fats present in foods such as almonds and olive oil. Keep saturated and trans-fats at bay as they increase cholesterol levels in the body.
  3. Exercise regularly: Regular exercise keeps your weight levels optimal and also brings down your cholesterol levels. Simple cardiovascular exercises such as running and swimming can be done on a regular basis.
  4. Avoid smoking: Smoking causes your blood vessels to constrict, thus hampering the flow of blood. In addition to accumulation of plaque, this can further hamper blood flow.
  5. Maintain optimal weight levels: Following healthy eating habits along with regular exercise will allow you to maintain optimal weight levels. So if your weight is on the higher side, then re-evaluate your eating habits and make the necessary changes.
