Neck Pain in Kids Can Be a Serious Affair!

DNB, DCH, MBBS

Neck Pain in Kids Can Be a Serious Affair!
Neck pain in kids can be more than what you think

Normally, neck pain in adults tends to gets fine in a week or so by taking proper rest and medication. But when it comes to kids, one has to be careful because if a kid is complaining of neck pain, it could be because of muscle soreness or slight infection but you need to be careful as it can be much more than merely a neck pain. Here, we are not referring to the neck pain which occurs during sore throat but the pain that happens at the back of the neck.

Let’s see how harmful it could be:

1. Torticollis: If a child’s neck pain is so severe that he’s not able to move his head, then it could be torticollis. You know that it’s torticollis when your child keeps his head continuously on one side which is often associated with painful muscle spasms.

2. Infection in lymph node: Pain in kid’s neck could be because of infection in lymph node which irritates the neck and causes its spasm.

3. Damaged spinal cord: Spinal cord gets its protection from neck. A little pain in the neck could be because of some fracture which the child might have got while playing etc. and did not notice. So, even a mild neck pain in children shouldn’t be ignored and if the child finds it bearable, then you must consult a doctor at once.

4. Meningitis: It’s a bacterial infection of the membrane which covers spinal cord and brain. A child can suffer brain damage if it is not treated in time. And it starts with neck pain only, so it shouldn’t be ignored at any cost.

5. Swelling of glands: When a child is complaining of neck pain or discomfort in the neck area, it can be due to infection which can cause swelling in the glands. So consulting your doctor on time will be good for your child’s health.

I am 33. I have pain both knees from last 20 days. Is any early osteoporosis. Should I take calcium or some painkiller.
Calcium has nothing to do with knee pain. It's a wear and tear of the joint, so: don't bend your knee more than 90 degree. Do knee exercises use sports shoes.

Good to know about no blockages in heart vessels and normal endoscopy reports at age 42. Your blood sugar reports & BP should be in control too, so I presume. Our eating habits are faulty-accept it. Acid is produced within stomach to make food softer to digest and process is going on @ 24 hours whether we eat or fast-both are bad if done in excess. Drink either of these every 2 hours so that acid does not remain collected in stomach. It gets moving the healthy way without hurting the inner layer of stomach causing acidity and ulcers. 1) green tea or normal tea with ginger and saunf. 2) clear soups of any kind. 3) just plain warm water and avoid chilled cold drinks. 4) drink warm water with a bit of honey + lemon (cut down 20 calories elsewhere. 5) do eat normal food regularly but avoid excess of oils and spices ,which you must be taking care because of DM & prevention of heart disease. 5) it is not necessary to eat every vegetable/fruit. Avoid good foods but causing distention. 6) avoid non veg heavy foods if you eat. You can have boiled /scrambled eggs 7) stop Pantocid ,it has long term bad effects like kidney failure. Take saunf, heeng, jeera, ajwain, ginger and garlic and other kitchen masalas which soften the food. 8) digene type of antacids are safer as they are just chalk! 9) diluted toned milk/ chhachh are natural ant acids. 10) take these which work like cotton to absorb acid in stomach but do consider calories. These foods are healthy and nourishing too e g bananas, boiled potatoes but not fried, khichri or boiled rice and moong daal with curd, daal-roti-dahi, soft raw vegetables and fruits like guava, carrots ,radishes, salad leafy vegeies. Oats and other breakfast cereals. No juices but only fruits with lots of fiber. You can take enzyme syrups like unizyme/ aristozyme for better digestion. Good luck and do write back after a week.

Common Hand Pain - Causes And Treatment

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics, Ozone Therapy
Orthopedist, Ghaziabad
Common Hand Pain - Causes And Treatment

The hand is one of the most commonly used parts of our body and is susceptible to damage, wear and tear as well as injury. Pain in the hand can be attributed to numerous causes, including damage and other conditions that can affect the joints, cartilage, nerves and other parts of the hand. Know more about controlling Joints Pain

Causes:

De Quervain's tendinitis: This is also known as de Quervain's tendinosis. It causes pain on the thumb side of the wrist. The pain may grow slowly or suddenly. It can also spread to every part of the thumb and up the lower arm. On the off chance that you have de Quervain's tendinitis, you may experience pain while performing the following actions:

  • Clenching The fist
  • Handling on or holding objects
  • Turning the wrist

Treatment for this includes the following:

  • Wearing a prop to rest the thumb and wrist
  • Calming drugs
  • Cortisone infusions

Carpal tunnel disorder: This is common amongst the well-known nerve issues. It can cause pain in the following parts of the hand:

  • Palm and a few fingers
  • Wrist
  • Lower arm

The treatment methods includes the following:

  • Resting the hand and wrist
  • Painkillers
  • Wrist support
  • Steroid infusions
  • Active recuperation
  • Breaks

Fracture: It's a crack or break in a bone that can cause immense pain in the hand. Other than this, the hand may also experience the following:

  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Loss of proper motion and movement

The kind of treatment depends on the kind of fracture. Braces are usually used for small fractures. Sticks, wires, or plates might be used to treat severe fractures. Likewise, surgery may also be recommended to set the broken bone properly.

Arthritis: This is a disease causing joint inflammation and stiffness of the joints. It causes the joints to lose the ligament that permits them to move easily against each other. This tears the ligament, giving rise to crippling pain and swelling.

In the hand, the regions where this regularly happens are as follows:

  • Base of the thumb
  • Center joint of one or more fingers
  • End joint, which is nearest to the fingertip

The treatment depends on the seriousness of the injury and the following may be used:

  • Painkillers
  • Props for the fingers or wrist
  • Heat
  • Non-intrusive treatment

Trigger finger: Also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, this defect causes the fingers or the thumb to bend. It can be difficult, particularly when bowing or fixing the influenced finger or thumb.

Knobs may form on the influenced ligaments. Also, the sheath itself may thicken. In the long run, the ligament may get to be adhered when you attempt to fix a twisted finger or thumb. Learn more about Ligament Injury.

Resting now and again while wearing a support may help resolve the issue. Over-the-counter torment pharmaceuticals can facilitate the agony. Corticosteroid infusions can mitigate side effects. Surgery might be recommended for extreme cases. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopedist.

Sir, hi. I slipped from the stairs of my house and got injured. We waited till the morning and go to a doctor nearby our house who is a bone and joint specialist Dr. Gagan deep. He started the treatment on 5th march'15 by immediately putting the plaster after an x-ray. Another x-ray was done by him after two days i. E. On 17th march'15 and had asked me to come after 45 days. On 20th april'15 he removed the plaster after another x-ray saying that now the bone is perfect. But I was not able to walk properly and the swelling persisted. We decided to take a second opinion. My friend then took him to Dr. Avasthi (ortho). That doctor clearly said that it was a day 1 surgery case and now also surgery is the only solution. One of my friend took me to a doctor Dr (physiotherapist). He also said that it was a clear case of day 1 surgery but we can cure it through physiotherapy. He suggested the following treatment: pneumatic compression walking brace and ambulatory training for the same. Waiting for early reply. Regards.

Hi, pulls, sprains, and tears (all the same thing) range in severity. Depending on the severity of your strain, you may need to take anywhere from a few days to a few months off of exercise so that the muscle can heal itself. When you do head back to the gym, start with gentle bodyweight exercise as it help to heal better. According to information provided. Will suggest you to take break from exercises and give it relative rest and avoid lifting heavy objects or weight lifting exercise. Suggest you get it checked with orthopedician or physiotherapist. You may required x- ray. As some time hairline fracture go undiagnosed (as you heard breaking sound). Thabks and take care.

Exercises for Sciatica To Keep It Under Check

Master of Physical Therapy MPT CARDIO, BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Rajkot
Exercises for Sciatica To Keep It Under Check
Exercises for Sciatica
Sciatica is often distinguished not as a medical condition but as a set of symptoms that underlie a more serious medical concern such as a slipped disc, degeneration of the spine or the lumbar region etc.
It is important to note the symptoms of Sciatica, as these are quite distinct -
1.Constant pain in one of the buttocks or leg (rarely are both legs affected)
2.The pain worsens on sitting
3.The pain is often described as a sharp & searing pain similar to a burning sensation
4.The pain is often accompanied by a heaviness or numbness that makes movement difficult
5.Shifting of postures (sitting to standing and back to sitting) becomes painful and laborious
An alternative to surgery would be to supplement the oral medication with certain specific exercises.
Reflexology, Acupuncture and Chiropractic manipulation are all considered effective to alleviate the pain to a large extent.
Patients are often encouraged to partake in daily exercise routine, incorporating strengthening and stretching exercises.
The strengthening exercises target the core or abdominal muscles along with the back muscles to provide more support to the back.
The stretching exercises will help to “loosen up” the surrounding muscle groups such as the hamstrings, which then allow for more blood and oxygen circulation alleviating the pain and giving the immune system a much needed boost.
When patients engage in a regular programme of gentle stretching and strengthening exercises, they can recover quickly (in comparison to those who do not exercise) from the flare ups and over time the painful episodes are known to reduce significantly, both in frequency as well as intensity.
Ancient holistic practices such Yoga and Tai-chi are often considered the best form of exercises for the afflicted because of the balanced and slow but controlled movements that complement the ‘breath’ rather than causing further exertion to the already fragile bone density.
It is recommended that expert advice be sought and the exercises should be undertaken only under trained supervision. Please do not attempt to “experiment” with Yoga or Tai-Chi on your own, as improper or wrong posture could lead to irreparable damage to the spine.
