GERD - Complications That Can Possibly Lead To It!

GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is a condition in which the stomach acids spill back into the esophagus due to a malfunctioning diaphragm muscle just above the stomach sac. People suffering from such a condition are likely to experience heartburn almost every time they have a meal.

However, not everyone who suffers from heartburn necessarily suffers from GERD. In fact, occasional heartburn is quite common and does not indicate any underlying condition. However, if the frequency of heartburn increase, you should probably get yourself checked by a gastroenterologist. Apart from the burning sensation in your chest, you may also experience a sourness at the back of your throat.

Here is a look at some of the leading complications in the body that can lead to GERD.

  1. ObesityObese people are at a greater risk of suffering from the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. This is because the fat deposited in and around the stomach region in obese individuals can sometimes lead to the lower esophageal sphincter or LES, the muscle flap that separates the stomach from the esophagus, to loosen. This leads to the stomach contents spilling back up the esophagus.
  2. StressEven though stress does not directly lead to GERD, it may act as a catalyst for the symptoms of the disease. Studies have revealed that people who are stressed out are at a greater risk of complaining about GERD symptoms than people who are in a relatively relaxed state of mind. Doctors call this condition ‘hypervigilance’, where even a little discomfort may seem like an extreme pain.
  3. Hiatal hernia: This is a condition where the stomach itself pushes against the LES muscle, causing it to open. A hiatal hernia is an underlying condition and in such a case, immediate treatment is necessary to eradicate the GERD symptoms completely.
  4. PregnancyPregnant women undergo several hormonal changes in their bodies. Some of these changes may have an adverse effect on the body of the mother but are necessary for the overall growth of the fetus. One of these hormones is progesterone whose concentration in the blood increases drastically during pregnancy. This can sometimes lead to the mother developing GERD symptoms. However, the condition should be treated once the baby is delivered and the mother’s hormone levels come back to their normal levels.

At any rate, people suffering from GERD should consult a gastroenterologist and avoid smoking, drinking alcohol. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

My eyes regularly releases water while reading and working on phone. What is its cure?

My eyes regularly releases water while reading and working on phone. What is its cure?
Hi lybrate-user. Sorry about your eye trouble. The problem faced by you is common in today's age. The problem actually is not cause by the use of the phone-it is cause by improper posture and habits while using the phone. I have a few suggestions for you regarding the usage of phones, computers, and books. Follow the rule of" 20" this means that every 20 minutes, take a gap of 20 seconds, blink your eyes actively 20 times and focus at an object which is minimum 20 feet away. This will help in relieving your eyes from the continuous strain that is caused due to staring. Staring at the computer continuously causes us to subconsciously blink less than normal. This causes the tear film on the surface of the eye to dry up. The result of this is pain, discomfort, etc. Another suggestions regarding the usage of computers is to maintain a proper posture. The computer must be positioned at the same height as your eye level. The neck should not be inadvertently flexed or extended. Roughly, an angle of 90 degrees should be maintained between your upper body and thighs. Likewise, a similar angle (90 degrees) should be maintained between your lower legs and thighs. Also the angle between your hands and arms should be roughly 90 degrees. This is the healthy ergonomic way of sitting while using a computer. Maintenance of proper posture would help in further relieving the symptoms of eye discomfort and pain. You could consider preservative free lubricant eye drops 4 to 5 times daily. These eye drops would ensure that your eyes stay well lubricated and fresh. All these suggestions may take a while to sink in and imbibe in your routine. Once followed, they are sure to work wonders for you. You could also use a preservative free lubricant eye drop 4 to 5 times in a day. Also, adequate sleep of 7 hours a day is essential in order to maintain healthy eyes.

Sir hi this is manoj I have hair falls problem so please give me best suggestions for this.
Most of the men hardly care about the shampoo they are using. I have seen a lot of my friends using a four-in-one shampoo, conditioner, body wash & automotive degreaser in one easy-to-use bottle for hair! Always use good hair care products and not just any scented shampoo. Add special hair care products to your routine and you’ll feel natural after trying it for a couple of days. Using specialized and good hair care products is a significant step towards hair loss prevention.

I am taking HP (h pylori) kit for ulcer I gives relif for ulcer but it also give side effect in which I have to go toilet 3 times daily then may I reduce the dose or any replacement for HP kit. Or which tablet of Hp kit (omeprazole, tinidazole, amoxicillin) should I take less amount (i have problem of gastric ulcer)

MBBS, MD, CCEBDM(diabetology), CCMTD(thyroid dissorders)
General Physician,
amoxicillin component of the kit might cause antibiotic induced diarrhoea, but is otherwise very safe drug. I would suggest to continue the regimen. to control diarrhoea take sporlac-plus sachet 2 packs a day.......take care and be healthy

Give pressure the dipping point on the portion between the thumb and the index finger on the back of the palm. Press and release for 15 times where the pain is more. This will solve the problem. Further do some wrist rotation exercise. Consult after 5 days. For further guidance and treatment.
