4 Ways To Keep Your Circulatory System Healthy

4 Ways To Keep Your Circulatory System Healthy

1. Engage in physical activity

Exercise of 30 minutes or more, most days of the week is advised to improve the health of your heart and circulatory system. Physical activity can help manage your weight and reduce your risk of developing other conditions that make your circulatory system work harder, like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Exercise is even effective when broken down into shorter sessions.

2. Quit smoking and tobacco use

Smoking and using tobacco products significantly increases your risk for heart disease. Damage to your heart and circulatory system by the chemical compounds in tobacco can cause atherosclerosis, which may lead to heart attack. Once you quit smoking, your risk of heart disease significantly decreases over the next year, according to the mayoclinic website. Regardless of how long you have smoked or used other tobacco products, you will notice the benefits of quitting as soon as you do.

3. Eat high quality foods

Your food intake can significantly improve the health of your circulatory system and heart. Diets containing five to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products are most beneficial to the circulatory system. Avoiding processed foods, foods that are high in saturated and trans fats, and excessive alcohol consumption can also improve your circulatory system health.

4. Maintain a healthy weight

Managing a healthy weight plays a major role in the health of your circulatory system. Being overweight can increase risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol, all of which put you at increased risk for heart attack and other circulation problems. By just losing 10 percent of your body weight, you can significantly increase the odds of not developing these chronic diseases.

Breast Reduction - Procedure and Recovery

Breast Reduction - Procedure and Recovery

Breast reduction or breast reduction surgery is a form of cosmetic surgery where the size of disproportionately large breasts is reduced.

Extra large breasts may cause neck pain, back pain and several other physical symptoms. Many women undergo a breast reduction to make life easier. This surgery provides effective results.

The procedure of breast reduction surgery-

Breast reduction surgeries can be conducted in an outpatient facility. You may have to stay for one night at a hospital as well. While performing this surgery, a patient is given general anaesthesia, which will make the patient asleep during the process.

Breast reduction surgery requires about two to five hours to be completed successfully. During the process, the surgeon will create a cut around the nipple and then on the breast. The cut is made in the shape of a keyhole. Extra skin, tissue and fat will be removed from the breast through the keyhole-shaped incision. Drainage tubes are also utilized for removal of excess skin and fat. After the removal is complete, and enough skin has been removed, the breasts are stitched. They are then wrapped in a special gauze. Sometimes, a surgical bra is required to be worn by the patient during the surgery.

Recovery from breast reduction surgery-

After a breast reduction surgery is performed, the patient must take a minimal one week off from any kind of work or school. Some women require two weeks or more to recover. However, this varies from patient to patient, but not more than three weeks are required for recovery. It is important to see the surgeon if you come across any problem.

You will be having follow up appointments with your surgeon, where the bandages and stitches on the breasts are removed.

As a part of the recovery process, a woman must abstain from all kinds of physical activities for one month following the surgery. After the surgery, it is likely for a patient to feel tired and experience breast pain. However, this is normal and you can have oral pain killers prescribed by your surgeon to get relief and ease. Heavy lifting should be strictly restricted.

Some women experience emotional reactions such as depression after the surgery. This too is normal, but you should talk to your surgeon about it.

Breast reduction surgery is an efficient cosmetic surgery, which enables women to reduce their breast size and volume. The results of such a surgery are quite satisfactory.

My mother has a lump in her left chest since one year ,could you suggest what kind of test should be done to know weather it is normal or any other problem. And recently she has undergone a gynaecological surgery for uterus removal just one week before.

DNB (General Surgery), MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Sri Ganganagar
You should show your mother to the same gyane or a surgeon to consult for the lump. Clinical examination asking with mamography and pathological examination (fnac) can diagnose upto 99% cases.

Hello. The monthly measures date of my wife is 13th. She has missed her date. After how many days we can test pregnancy so we can be sure of it?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS

Hi lybrate-user. I suggest you do a pregnancy test as soon as possible to check. Though I would recommend to do the test with an early morning sample of urine as it has highest chances of detecting a pregnancy.

Dear user. ABORTIONS can be performed as early as an intra-uterine pregnancy can be identified by ultrasound, which is usually about 3-4 weeks after your Last Menstrual Period (LMP). In the first trimester, two options are available: Aspiration is done by a physician in the clinic or the Abortion Pill which you take at home. Do not take any decisions before consulting your gynecologist. Take care.

Food To Be Avoided During Pregnancy

MBBS, MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Faridabad
Food To Be Avoided During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a really beautiful as well as a very sensitive phase in a woman’s life. Craving for your favourite food in the middle of the night, or even throughout the day, is a perfectly normal phenomenon. Although you deserve to be pampered with your favourite food, however, there are certain foods which irrespective of cravings you really need to avoid for the well being of that tiny little life inside you.

Here is a list of food items to be avoided during pregnancy.

  1. Starting with fruits, papaya and pineapples are big negatives. These fruits contain substances that produce uterine contractions inducing labour, and thus, abortion.

  2. Sesame seeds also tend to excite uterine muscles thereby causing contractions which may lead to abortion. So it would be an intelligent step to avoid intake of these. Other dry fruits like raisins, dates, almonds, walnuts, pistachios are safe to consume in a moderate amount.

  3. Spices that make way into this list include fennel and fenugreek seeds. These may induce uterine contractions too.

  4. Although fish is rich in omega 3 and is an important food to include in the pregnancy diet, intake of some sorts of fish might not be a good idea. Here is a list of the kinds of fishes that should be avoided.

    • Fishes containing mercury

    • Smoked or refrigerated seafood.

    • Fishes cultured in polluted water

    • Shellfish that is undercooked. Eg, clams, mussels, oyster

  5. Undercooked or raw eggs may be tainted with salmonella bacteria that might cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Desserts or sauces containing raw or uncooked egg should be avoided.

  6. Any form of undercooked or treated meat or poultry. This is because a parasite named toxoplasma may be present that might cause excessive food poisoning which in turn could cause foetal damage or miscarriage.

  7. Milk is one of the essential foods in pregnancy diet; however, any sort of unpasteurized milk is strictly negative.

  8. Sprouts and raw vegetables should be avoided. However, these can be eaten if shallow fried.

  9. One major setback for coffee addicts is that caffeine intake is required to be lowered to minimum amounts; that is, not more than one cup a day.

    • Herbal tea

    • Supplements

    • Saccharine

    • Canned food as well as street food.

There are many more little details that should be taken care of but this list would be handy for newly pregnant women. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dietitian-nutritionist.

Vaginal Bleeding Between Periods - Are There Ways to Prevent it?

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Post Doctoral Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine, Fellowship in Infertility, Diploma in Assisted Reproductive Technology & Embryology
Gynaecologist, Hyderabad
Vaginal Bleeding Between Periods - Are There Ways to Prevent it?

Many women experience unusual vaginal bleeding between periods at some point in their lives. It is also known as metrorrhagia. Vaginal bleeding is thought to be abnormal in the following cases:
1. When your menstrual period is not expected
2. When your menstrual flow is lighter or heavier than normal
3. At unexpected stages in life. For example, when you are pregnant or after you have attained menopause.

Bleeding during periods is not a normal condition. Usually, the duration of the cycle is about 21 – 35 days. Abnormal vaginal bleeding has numerous conceivable causes. Independently, it doesn't show a genuine condition.

  1. Mid-cycle bleeding can be caused due to ovulation.
  2. Two hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle are progesterone or oestrogen. A condition of hormonal imbalance which is known as Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOs) causes interference with normal ovulation. This results in problems in thyroid glands as well as causes dysfunctional ovaries.
  3. Medications such as birth control pills are capable of causing abnormal bleeding, especially with the irregular intake of such medications.
  4. Infections or inflammation caused in the pelvic regions such as uterus, vagina, cervix, ovaries or fallopian tubes are capable of causing abnormal bleeding. STIs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) and PIDs (Pelvic inflammatory disease) are often the cause of such a condition.
  5. Although Cancer is not one of the primary causes, cancer in organs such as the uterus, vagina, cervix and ovaries are capable of causing abnormal bleeding during periods.

How it can prevented

  1. Maintaining a healthy diet. Women who are either underweight or overweight tend to have more problems with abnormal bleeding
  2. Relaxation practices should be followed so that stress is reduced. Stress can cause abnormal bleeding.
  3. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) should be consumed to reduce menstrual bleeding. Examples are ibuprofen or naproxen.
  4. In case of consumption, birth control pills should be taken as per the prescription only and regularly at the same time.
  5. Hormone therapy (using external hormones in a medical treatment) can be used in order to regulate menstrual cycles, stabilize the endometrium which is the lining of the uterus as well as to rectify hormonal imbalances. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist and ask a free question.

Advantage of Using Dental Microscope in Endodontic Practice!

Dentist, Delhi
Advantage of Using Dental Microscope in Endodontic Practice!

Use of Dental Operating Microscope in endodontic therapy In all areas, from exposure of the access cavity and preparation to three-dimensional obturation and post endodontic management, the microscope provides major advantages over working without appropriate magnification. As a result, the use of the microscope can be expressly recommended for the following specific indications and special aspects.

For an endodontic specialist include: increased visualization, improved Quality and precision of treatment, enhanced ergonomics, ease of proper digital documentation and increased communication ability through integrated video.

1} Examination, diagnosis, and treatment planning - With enhanced visualization, the clinician’s ability to diagnose problems in the earlier stages of a disease process is possible. High-powered magnification allows endodontists to identify a microscopic blemish, colour alteration, tiny amounts of plaque collecting within the grooves, microscopic amounts of chalky white demineralization around the grooves, and tiny amounts of flaking of darkened carious tooth structure within the crevices of these grooves. Treatments also can be performed with a greater level of precision, thereby reducing the occurrence of failures and the need of redos.

2} Diagnosis of cracked teeth Microfractures and longitudinal fractures which are often difficult to diagnoseclinically and represent signs of occlusal damages which include cracks in teeth orrestorations, craze lines, wear facets, cracks at slightly elevated marginal ridges, or areaswhere the enamel has been worn by opposing porcelain, exposing dentin and thus causingsensitivity and pain can be viewed more precisely with DOM

3} Better visualization of pulp chamber, canal orifices Magnification allows endodontists to better identify anatomical landmarks, within thepulp chamber—including the sides, overhanging remnants of the pulp chamber roof, initialperforations into the pulp, dentinal map, canal orifices and to differentiate between the pulphorns and the main body of pulp within the chamber

4} During instrumentation , the improved ability to see specific canals allowsendodontists to maneuver files into canal openings with greater efficiency, to distinguishbetween vital and necrotic canals, and to detect tiny amounts of purulence or blood drainingthrough specific canals or see any tiny amounts of necrotic pulp material that were notremoved during canal instrumentation. So it is possible for an endodontist to determine if allcanals are accessed and instrumented properly when a direc t view might be difficult withoutremoving excessive amounts of coronal tooth structure

5} Locating hidden canals/canal systems Anatomical variations are not as rare or exotic as is frequently assumed as described by Walter Hess as early as 1917. Many of these important structures cannot be readily detected or treated with traditional endodontic treatment methods. If the radiographic image is examined more closely, there are often signs of unusual root and/or canal shapes like those caused by changes in the course of canal anatomy or root surface. An off center exposure or three dimensional image can provide further valuable information. Three rooted premolars, for example, are encountered in 6% of all first maxillary premolars. However, anatomical variations also include other complex structures like middle mesial canal in mandibular first molar and C-shaped canals in mandibular second molar (7.6%) . Without a doubt, the second mesiobuccal canal in maxillary molars (16% and 78% in vivo), which is often difficult to localize and prepare, is the reason why the failure rate is highest in first maxillary molars . Virtually all studies point to distinct advantages in the localization and treatment of this highly complex anatomical variation when using a dental microscope. The introduction of the dental microscope and the associated ability to inspect the root canals – both orthograde and retrograde – have fundamentally changed our understanding of dental morphology and its complexity.

6} Identification and removing of Obliterations and calcifications - These signs occur to a greater or lesser extent in 50% of all teeth, impairing instrumentation considerably or essentially preventing treatment of the canal system

Identification and removal of Denticles This specific form of calcification is also encountered very frequently, can block the canal entranceor even obstruct further instrumentation. Denticles can be found and negotiate readily with the help of a DOM

In Open apex cases Modern apexification therapies call for special treatment techniques and materials, the manipulation of which is facilitated significantly under a dental microscope .

Perforation repair Treatment of iatrogenic problem such as pulpal floor perforation, lateral root perforation and prognosis chiefly involve visualization of the problem so the microscope certainly plays a major role in this contex.

7} Removal of fractured post and instruments The enhanced vision with magnification and illumination from a microscope allows endodontist to observe the most coronal aspects of fractured post and broken instruments andto remove them without any major loss of tooth structure and perforations, the prognosis forpreservation of the tooth is quite good.

Microsurgical apicoectomy Incorporating microscopic approach in surgical endodontics, Use of the smaller retro mirrors it is possible to carefully examine the apical segment of the root endand perform an atraumatic , more moderated bevel apical resection procedures and permit a coaxial ultrasonicpreparation into the root, better management of the bone structures thereby making minimally invasive class Iretrograde cavity preparation and retrograde filling of the canal system and all its branches along the longitudinal axis of the root easy to perform

Microscope reduces distance and improves the overall treatment quality and encourages endodontists to review and perfect their own treatment concepts resulting in a positive impact on the entire practice structure but also increases the enjoyment of providing treatment.
