Mr. Lybrate-user, excess use of cough syrups containing codeine for long time is not good. Codeine can lead to addiction, both physical and mental. Plus causes constipation. According to the company's own list of side-effects list it can cause cns depression, lassitude, drowsiness, loss of appetite, dizziness, blurring of vision, tightness in chest, hypertension etc. So such preparations should be used sparingly only for a very short duration. Thanks.

I am 39 year old female and having anti tubercular medicines since last one month but i'm still having fever but all my ct scans and blood reports are normal except for tuberculosis. Kindly tell me for how long the fever persist?

DNB (Radiodiagnosis), DMRD, MBBS
Radiologist, Bangalore
Hi , the tuberculosis symptoms should usually subside in 6 weeks and you should start gaining weight. Please have daily 1800 kcal diet and follow up on your body weight every 15 days and make sure it is increasing. It is important to know where was the tb lesion on your ct scan and if required it is to be followed up. You should also get liver function test done. If there is no improvement in symptoms after taking treatment then please discuss with your doctor regarding the possibility of drug resistant tb and this might require change in medicines. Regards,

Every day when I wake up .I'm having cold and cough .I don't know what it is. It started from my childhood itself .I have seen many doctors. But they were not able to cure me . Please help me.

MBBS
Geriatrician, Jaunpur
Hello lybrate-user, i'm sure this will help you. You can try 1) steam inhalation 2-3 times a day. 2) drink lots of water (around 2-3 litres/day) & keep yourself hydrated. 3) anti-allergic medications -this one will help you most plus 4) also take proper 8 hr sleep a day. Avoid late night studying/work. Note, you should not ignore the, as recurrent episodes may lead to development of polyps in nose & different other problems like sinusitis. Feel free to get in touch for any further assistance.

Hello My husband has been diagnosed with brain tuberculosis. Docs r saying there is fluid accumulation in the brain. He is on tb medicines since the last 20 days. Though is headache and drowsy ness has gradually decreased. But the weakness refuses to go. Doctors has asked me to give him high protein diet. But the protein in his brain is 152. Is it safe to give him high protein diet. Since his protein level in brain is so high.

DNB(Respiratory Diseases), MBBS
Pulmonologist, Jabalpur
It take some time for anti tb drugs to show some good effects, so continue medicines. Yes high protein diet is recommended. The high protein in the brain fluid (csf) which you are taking about is due to the infection and not that his body has high proteins. It is necessary to have proteins in body so that the immunity levels to fight tb are optimized. Another thing to note is that brain tb patients need anti tb medicines form longer durations than lungs tb patients i. E. At least for an year.

I am suffering from both of maxillary sinusitis what is the reason behind it and how can it be controlled kindly suggest me.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
Main symptoms for maxillary sinusitis are thick nasal discharge, headache, watering eyes, forehead pain, recurrent infection of nose and mouth, post nasal drip, sinusitis, is nothing but a physiological disorder of nose which led by malfunctioning of aerodynamics of nose (temporary sinusitis, secondly it is because of repeated infections of the sinus (permanent sinusitis) sinuses regulations and air conditioning of the air which we breathe and to get the benefit of above we must have normal, well sized opened sinusitis and hence nose breathing is required, those who breathe from mouth, they have tendency to get more throat and lungs infections. Recurrent sinus infection, pollution, poor diet, spicy food, long term steam inhalation from nose, and allergies leads to thick discharge from nose. This thick mucus if stays in the sinuses, it leads to irritation of the sinus skin which is mucosa and this go on growing hence leads to permanent sinusitis this extra growth is called nasal polyps this is where patient needs surgical correction. If patient comes to nose surgeon at right time, doctor can revert his/her symptoms and surgery can be abandoned. Sinusitis if patient does not take serious steps to correct might lead to cardiac symptoms, lung diseases, etc. Once there are nasal polyps you have to go for surgery immediately.

What are the tests to confirm TB? Can a x-ray detect TB? If sputum is not available how can I test TB? Please be quick to answer.

MD PULMONARY, DTCD
Pulmonologist, Faridabad
By xray chest we can suspect TB but can not confirm without AFB demonstration in sputum by smear, genexpert mtb/rif or culture for TB mycobacteria. By mantoux test or TB gold blood test we can detect latent TB which mean one is infected with TB bacilli but can not confirm active diaese.

Hi. I understand your concern. You are having asthma. You will need to undergo pulmonary function test. It is needed for the diagnosis as well as to assess the severity of asthma. Based on which you will benefit from inhalers. Consult a pulmonologist for the same. Thanks hope your concern was addressed.
