What are the symptoms of cancer and how to identify whether cancer is there are not?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Cancer presents as uncontrolled proliferation of cells leading to symptoms like palpable lump, ulceration, abnormal bleeding from anywhere, weight loss, difficulty in swallowing, change in voice, change in bowelor bladder habits, throat pain etc. One has to go for complete examination of body for any obvious lesion, some radiological investigations like chest xray, ultrasound abdomen etc, blood investigation for cancer markers and routine urine and stool examination. If any specific symptoms are there then specific tests may be done, otherwise routine screening should be done atleast annually.

Uterine Cancer - How to Prevent it?

MBBS, MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Kanpur
Uterine Cancer - How to Prevent it?

Uterine cancer is also known as endometrial cancer and it mostly affects the middle-aged women. The uterus of a woman is a muscular organ. The cancer can affect any part of the uterus and is more common in women having obesity, diabetes and hypertension. In most cases, the cancer starts in the endometrium, hence called endometrial cancer. Uterine cancer can be cured using any of the following methods:

  1. Surgical removal of the uterus along with ovaries, lymph nodes and fallopian tubes
  2. Radiation therapy
  3. Chemotherapy

What are the Red Flag symptoms of Uterine cancer?

  1. Post-Menopausal Bleeding: Any vaginal blood loss once you have attained Menopause
  2. Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Any bleeding besides your menstrual bleeding or if your menstrual cycle becomes abnormal especially if you are more than 45 years old.

Although uterine cancer is curable, it's always a better option to prevent it. You cannot control all the causes for uterine cancer like those related to heredity. But other than that, here are a few ways in which you can prevent suffering from uterine cancer:

  1. Control body weight: Keep your body weight in control. Obesity can pose a huge risk of getting affected with uterine cancer. The fat in the body produces estrogen, which promotes the growth of uterine lining that is the Endometrium and may lead to Endometrial cancer.
  2. Breast feed: If you are lactating, then the risk of cancer decreases, as breast feeding decreases ovulation as well as estrogen activities.
  3. Treat abnormal bleeding: If you are suffering from any type of abnormal bleeding, be that heavy periods, bleeding even after you reached menopause or if you start bleeding between two period cycles, consult your doctor immediately. Abnormal bleeding is the symptom of endometrial hyperplasia, which might eventually turn cancerous.
  4. Exercise: As already said earlier, keep your weight under control to avoid uterine cancer. Exercise to avoid increase in weight leading to obesity. It also reduces the estrogen level in your body.
  5. Healthy food: Healthy food is the key to avoid any disease, be that a common cold or uterine cancer. Eat a healthy and balanced diet everyday to be fit and bouncing.
  6. Birth control pills: It is believed that the intake of birth control pills helps to keep uterine cancer at bay.

So eat healthy, exercise and adopt healthy habits. Then nothing can stop you from enjoying life to the fullest. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Treating Skin Cancer with Photodynamic Therapy

BHMS, PG Diploma In Clinical Cosmetology (PGDCC), MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Greater Noida
Treating Skin Cancer with Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy or PDT is a relatively new and non-invasive treatment for non melanomaskin cancer. It is mostly used in cases where the cancer is superficial and has not spread too deep. PDT is used mostly to treat Actinic Keratoses on the face and scalp, Basal cell carcinomas, Bowen’s disease, as well as other conditions such as head and neck, mouth, lung and gullet cancer.

How does it work?
This treatment involves the use of a drug known as photosensitize or a photosensitizing agent with a specific type of light. When the photosensitizing agents get exposed to a light of a specific wavelength, a form of oxygen is produced, which eliminates nearby cancer cells. Every photosensitizer gets activated by the special light. The wavelength of the light determines how much it can penetrate into the body.

Process of Photodynamic therapy
Skin cancer is cured by PDT in several steps. The first step involves the injection of a photosensitizer into the patient’s bloodstream. The blood cells absorb the agent all over the body, but in the cancer cells, it stays for a longer duration. Within 72 hours after the injection is given, the skin is exposed to light. The photosensitizer agent present in the cancer affected cells absorbs the light. An active oxygen form gets produced, which kills the cancer cells.

Other than killing the cancer cells directly, PDT uses two other ways to destroy cancerous tumors. The blood vessels in the tumor are affected, which leads to its death. The immune system also gets charged up and activated for fighting the cancer cells.

The light used for PDT is usually in the form of a laser. LEDs are also used to treat tumors present on the surface of the skin. The primary photosensitizing agent used in PDT is called porfimer sodium or Photofrin.

PDT can be undertaken in the outpatient department in a hospital. After taking the treatment, you have to keep the cancer affected area of the skin dry and covered for 36 hours. The area should be treated with care while showering. In case of thick skin lesions, repeat treatments are required within 4 weeks.

When is PDT used for skin cancer
PDT can be undertaken instead of surgery for treating basal cell cancer, Bowen’s disease and actinic keratosis. PDT is used in cases where surgeries are required. It is used to treat large skin cancers, which are not very deep and in the case when several cancers develop in an area. For many skin conditions, PDT is a better remedy than undergoing a surgery.

Advantages of PDT

  1. There are no long term side effects.
  2. The process is less invasive compared to surgery.
  3. A very short time is taken for this therapy to be undertaken.
  4. The process can be repeated several times in the same area.
  5. Very less scarring takes place in the affected area.
    1. The cost of this procedure is lesser than surgery.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dermatologist.

What is the survival in number of years for a Breast cancer survivor, who is free from any recurrences/secondaries after treatment with all three modalities (Surgery, Chemo & Radio therapy)

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, now that more studies in terms of genetic analysis is being done, we know there is a group who respond very well and are long survivors. It also depends on the hormonal status ER PR positive patients are better responders. So it is difficult to say in general as the survival will depend on Histopathology, grade and lymph node status, ER PR status, initial stage and then newly analysed genetic status. Earlier stage more number of relapse free survival, receptor positive, better survival etc.

Hello I'm asking for some help regarding cancer issues. How can we. Recognise cancer issues. My mom got breast cancer and now she getting so many problem. So how can she will be all right from breast cancer.

MBBS, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Delhi
breast cancer if diagnosed early is generally given radio/ chemotherapy to shrink the tumour followed by surgery to remove the breast and axillary lymph nodes. It has good survival chances if treated early. Regular self breast examination to look for a lump, pain, nipple discharge/ abnormality, skin puckering helps in quick diagnosis which should be followed by timely sonography or mammogram to detect the cancer in time.

Whether enlargement of prostrate is harmful? How to prevent enlargement of prostrate in men and remedy the already enlarged prostrate?

BHMS
Homeopath,
Whether enlargement of prostrate is harmful? How to prevent enlargement of prostrate in men and remedy the already en...
Dear lybrate user, benign hypertrophy of prostate is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. In this clinical condition multiple nodules are formed inside the prostate gland. These nodules often compress the urethra resulting in the narrowing of the lumen of urethra & producing a resistance to the urine flow. Resistance to urine flow requires the bladder to work harder during voiding, possibly leading to progressive enlargement, instability, or weakness of the bladder muscle. Benign hypertrophy of prostate can be easily diagnosed by an usg of whole abdomen along with blood test for prostate specific antigen (psa). Follow the given medication as directed:- 1) 5 drops of homoeopathic causticum 30 at early morning daily before brushing teeth 2) 5 drops of homoeopathic conium mac 30 before going to bath daily. 3) 5 drops of homoeopathic baryta carb 30 just one hour before dinner daily. 4) homoeopathic mother tincture sabal serrulata q, 30 drops, twice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. Along with the aforesaid medication few changes in your lifestyle are also necessary. Lifestyle alterations to address the symptoms include decreasing fluid intake before bedtime, moderating the consumption of alcohol and caffeine-containing products, and following a timed voiding schedule. Also it would be better if you could void the urine in sitting position.

What is cancer? Is there any medicines for this disease? Is there any prevention methods. If yes please tell me doctor. Thank you in advance.:)

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Cancer is caused by abnormal uncontrolled proliferation of cells, usually caused by some faulty signals in the body which lose check over few cells and they become autonomous. It can be lifestyle related like lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle, fatty food, hormonal imbalance, viruses, pollution, smoking, tobacco, or may be genetic. One must be careful about what we eat and what kind of environmental factors effect us in our surrounding and avoid known carcinogens. Regular screening and health check up to rule out any early disease prior to producing symptoms. Turmeric, tulsi leaves, wheat grass etc have anticancer properties.

There are no absolute risk factors identified for this cancer but the key is to reduce the known ones. Also, doing some of these simple things will boost your immunity and can reduce the risk to some extent. •Avoid exposure to radiations If possible avoid exposure to high doses of radiation as during the certain treatment procedures patients are often exposed to high intensity radiation which increases their odds of succumbing to blood cancer. •Avoid exposure to chemicals Avoid getting exposed to certain harmful chemicals such as pesticides, as this may add up to increased risk of blood cancer. If your occupation forces you to stay in touch with these chemicals you must take proper safety measures. Exposure to benzene can also increase the chances of this cancer. •Avoid smoking or tobacco in every form Cigarette or tobacco consumption is a huge risk factor for not only cancers but several other diseases and should be completely avoided. By following few healthy lifestyle habits given below one can reduce the chances of getting affected with any type of cancer. •Regular exercise Regular exercise is essential to keep the body healthy. If you exercise daily for 30 minutes there are less chances of getting affected to the blood cancer, but still there is no evidence which supports it. •Eat healthy Healthy food consumption helps you to fight against diseases. Increasing consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables that contain fibers and a lot of nutrients reduces the risk of blood cancer to some exten •Don't ignore the symptoms Be watchful of your body and the signals it gives to you, especially when you are being exposed to one or few risk factor of blood cancer. Always consult your doctor when any kind of signs related to the cancer is seen. By having regular health checkups the blood cancer detection can be done at early stages. To live healthy & happy, one must keep a check on the body’s functioning by going for regular health checkups. This helps in assessing risk factors and diagnosing diseases at an early stage, which will result in effective treatment and better management of the condition. Blood cancer treatment & therapy options Treatment for blood cancer depends on the type of cancer, your age, how fast the cancer is progressing, where the cancer has spread and other factors. Some common blood cancer treatments include: •Stem cell transplantation: A stem cell transplant infuses healthy blood-forming stem cells into the body. Stem cells can be collected from the bone marrow, circulating (peripheral) blood and umbilical cord blood. •Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is the use of anticancer drugs designed to interfere with and halt the growth of cancer cells in the body. Chemotherapy for blood cancer sometimes consists of giving several drugs together in a set regimen. It may also be given before a stem cell transplant. •Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy may be used to destroy cancer cells or to relieve pain or discomfort. It may also be given before a stem cell transplant.

There is no proof that such reactions may cause cancer, though we must avoid preservatives and chemicals in the diet as far as possible. Amla juices are good for health, enhance immunity And has protective role from not only cancer but also other diseases.
