Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Can Severe Gas be a Sign of it

DM - Gastroenterology, MD - General Medicine, MBBS
Gastroenterologist, Hyderabad
Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Can Severe Gas be a Sign of it

Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder, which generally affects the colon (large intestine). It usually show symptoms like abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, diarrhea, gas and constipation. IBS is a long term condition. It can result in sudden mood swings, depression and thus, holds you back from living your life to the fullest. IBS can be controlled by managing lifestyle, stress and managing your diet. Medication and counseling could also be required to manage IBS.

Symptoms of IBS:
1. Immense cramping and pain.
2. A feeling that your belly is bloated all the time
3. Severe gas
4. Alternating and sudden bouts of constipation and diarrhea.
5. Presence of mucus in the feces.

Whenever you experience such kind of symptoms, it is always advisable that you must consult a doctor, so that it doesn't lead to a serious condition.

When should you consult a doctor for IBS?
IBS is not a chronic disorder and can be controlled by home remedies. It may also require medical treatment if the symptoms become acute and persist for too long. If you experience certain symptoms like rectal bleeding, weight loss and heavy abdominal pain that might increase at night, you may be at a risk for colon cancer. If such symptoms persist, you should visit a doctor as soon as possible.

Causes of IBS:

  1. Foods: Most people are susceptible to IBS if they consume foods like spices, fats, fruits, cabbage, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, carbonated beverage, milk or alcohol. These foods irritate the lining of the stomach and trigger IBS. However, the trigger may vary from person to person.
  2. Stress: Signs and symptoms of IBS can also increase if you are very stressed out. Stress makes your muscles too worked up and this may result in IBS. However, you should know that stress aggravates or triggers the symptoms but doesn’t cause IBS.
  3. Hormones: Women are more likely to develop IBS. Fluctuations in the hormonal cycle can trigger IBS. This usually occurs around or during menstruation.
  4. Other illnesses: Sometimes illness such as gastroenteritis (infectious diarrhea) or bacterial overgrowth in the intestines can trigger symptoms of IBS.
  5. Age: You will be more likely to develop IBS if you are 45 years of age or above.
  6. Hereditary: People having a family history of IBS are more susceptible to develop IBS.
  7. Mental problems: Depression, personality disorder, anxiety and a history of sexual abuse can also trigger symptoms of IBS.

Frequent micturition may simply be due to anxiety. If you have any burning or pain during urination please get urine routine and culture sensitivity test done. Ultrasound kub may also help in ruling out any stone which may present in similar manner. For anxiety you need to relax. Too much strict schedule and work pressure can result in anxiety. Give some time to sports or games in morning to help yourself relieve any tensions.

Gastric upset (probably hyperacidity or mild gastritis) following earlier treatment, should be settling down in a few days. The unease can be corrected by taking small meals more frequently. Plus avoiding remaining hungry or on empty stomach for long time. Avoiding excess tea or coffee also alcohol and aerated sweetened drinks like colas. Keep away from bakery items and pastries. It is better to exercise daily for over 1 hour, even brisk walk itself is fine, certain yogasanas also help. If symptoms are persistent, then it is better to consult your doctor or come back here. Using PPI to reduce excess acid is beneficial. Thanks.

MD - Pathology
General Physician, Amritsar
Apply dologel mouth paint before eating anything. Eat food low in spices and it should not be hot. While brushing your teeth take care not to hit the ulcer. Take capsule becosule z once daily. Get examined by a dental surgeon to rule out any dental problem.

Top tips for aiding digestion

Too much food and drink? Keep these useful hints and homeopathic medicines in mind

General tips

Drink a cup of boiled water in the morning before breakfast. This seems to cleanse the stomach and often works wonders.
Eat slowly. One of the main causes of indigestion is unchewed food.
Don’t eat food “piping hot”. Our stomachs are not meant to have hot foods inside them. A useful thing to remember is that if it is hot in the mouth it is hot in the stomach. This includes tea and coffee. Food and drinks that are too hot may disrupt enzymes and injure the lining of the stomach. So, always wait for it to cool.
Don’t eat on the hoof. Meals should be taken at a leisurely pace. If you eat on the move, there is more chance that digestion will not begin. Instead foods in the stomach and intestine will start to ferment, producing gases that bloat you.
Avoid eating fruit with the meal. Tempting though it is, because it seems lighter on the stomach than puddings, it is not good at the end of a meal. This is because fruit digests faster than dense proteins, so fermentation and gas accumulation may occur.
If bloating is a persistent problem, try simplifying your meals. Instead of having lots of food groups at one meal try separating them. For example, proteins need acid enzyme digestive juices, whereas carbohydrates need alkaline enzyme digestive juices. When you have to break down both types all at once you are not achieving optimal enzymatic action, so some fermentation and gas accumulation may occur.
Try taking slightly smaller servings and think twice about second helpings. As a good rule of thumb, try to get into the habit of estimating the quantity you allow yourself using “nature’s food bowl”. Cup your two hands together as if you were using them to make a bowl. The quantity of food that would fill that “bowl” should be your maximum at any meal.
Make sure that you drink enough water. Ideally, hydrate your stomach with a glass of water half an hour before a meal.
Homeopathic medicines
Homeopathy has great proven worth in dealing with many digestive complaints. However, be aware of certain warning symptoms which should not be ignored. An early medical opinion and diagnosis is important in the following situations:

sudden severe abdominal pain;
vomiting, especially if accompanied by abdominal distension;
weight loss which is not from deliberate dieting;
alteration in the normal bowel habit, either with persistent looseness or constipation;
bleeding from the back passage

For above complaints homeopathy give good results
