How to Manage if Your Child Is Suffering From Asthma

Asthma is a condition that can flare up anytime; be it at your child's soccer practice or during the middle of the night. Whenever the condition sets in, it leads to your child struggling for breath. For a parent to witness this situation can be hard; but you should know the techniques to keep the situation under control.

Here are a few tips on how to manage the situation:

1. Find out the triggers in your home: Asthma is triggered due to substances that your child may be allergic to. Examples are cigarette smoke, fur of pets and dust. If possible, keep your child away from the known triggers so that the condition does not flare up again.

2. Keep records of the following: It is good to have an action plan ready for your child when the bouts of asthma strike. When you visit the doctor to discuss about your child's condition then make sure that you have these records at hand.

  • The triggers that caused the bout of asthma
  • How many times did your child have wheezing episodes?
  • The number of times your child has been admitted for the same reason
  • The medications that your child is currently taking, dosage and/or whether they have been changed
  • How often does he/she need medications if he/she has acute symptoms?

3. Knowledge of the test your child may require: Asthma control test is a type of test that allows parents and children to grade asthma symptoms without a doctor. A pulmonary function test is used to detect the capacity of the lungs and flow of air.

4. See how your child responds to the treatments: You should consider changing the treatments for your child if he/she has recurrent symptoms of asthma attack and require frequent visits to the Emergency Room even after taking medications for an extended duration.

5. Long term treatment plans require patience: Any asthma treatment plan requires patience as they might not immediately cure symptoms.

On 5.10.16, we shifts with our baby just 8 months old child from our native village to New Delhi who was feeding cow and mother's milk there. Now we have changed to buffalo milk in Delhi. Today he start vomiting two or three times. Suggest us. Thanks n Regards.

Pediatrician, Jaipur
The problem is not with milk but the way you are feeding. Avoid bottle feeding & give milk with katori spoon along with semisolid foods at regulr intervals. Take care of hygeine in feeding, cleaning always. May give antivomiting medicine if needed.

Hi Feeding interval to follow in order to feed my 1 month son. Currently we are feeding him 3 to 4 hours interval.

MBBS, MD, DM - Neonatology
Pediatrician, Delhi
I think best one is Demand Feeding, It means give feed as and when ur baby demand (crying). No need to feed as per alarm/hours. If your baby is sleeping fir 2-3 hr after breast feed, Its satisfactory, Maximum u can wait even for4-5 hrs if your baby is sleeping, not more than thus. I mean to say that if your baby is sleeping after feed, dont disturbed till about 4hrs. Awaken ur baby when its more than 4 hrs. If your baby demand within 1 hr, check for different reasin of cry.

My 3 year old is sick with a temperature of 100 degrees she can not keep anything down including liquids. What should I do?

BHMS, MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Gurgaon
100* is not a very high temperature. Maybe she has congestion in the chest or has become too weak. Try giving her warm water in sips. Soups, light food. Pl show her to a local paediatrician. Always better to consult as vomiting everything not very good.

To be easier for understanding. Any diet which is green yellow or red in colour has lot of iron. Rich sources are jaggery. Beet, carrot, tomatoes. All green vegetables, pista ragi and sprout at some extent.

Pediatrician,
Appropriate and timely response to newborn's emotional need is must to develop secure type of attachment.Babies are born with intelligent brain and have basic survival instincts that leads to different working models for defence which are carried through adult life. First two years of life are very important for forming individual attachment type and lot depends on nature of primary caregiver's (mother in most cases) response to child,s emotional needs

Hi, my baby is 2 month 23 days old. His birth wt. Was 2.6 kg and currently he is 5 kgs. I have following queries 1. My kid has recently started eating his hand and sucking his thumb. Is it normal? Shall I stop him from doing so? 2.he is normally breast fed. But sometimes I need to go out. What formula can I give him and in how much quantity? 3. He feeds after 3 or 4 hours is it normal? Sometimes he sleeps for 6 hours at night. Alsohe does not burps during night feedings? Is it fine?

BHMS
Homeopath, Secunderabad
It would be preferable to breast feed the baby as long as possible (first 6 months is important .) Many babies play with their hands and legs which is normal. Babies can sleep more than 14 to 16 hrs in a 24 hrs. They sleep, play and need feeding every 2 - 4 hrs (varies slightly in different children.)

Thumbsucking is a natural reflex for children. Sucking on thumbs, fingers, pacifiers or other objects may make babies feel secure and happy and help them learn about their world. Young children may also suck to soothe themselves and help them fall asleep.
However, after the permanent teeth come in, sucking may cause problems with the proper growth of the mouth and alignment of the teeth. It can also cause changes in the roof of the mouth. Pacifiers can affect the teeth essentially the same ways as sucking fingers and thumbs, but it is often an easier habit to break. The intensity of the sucking is a factor that determines whether or not dental problems may result. If children rest their thumbs passively in their mouths, they are less likely to have difficulty than those who vigorously suck their thumbs. Some aggressive thumbsuckers may develop problems with their baby (primary) teeth.
Children usually stop sucking between the ages of two and four years old, or by the time the permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. If you notice changes in your child’s primary teeth, or are concerned about your child’s thumbsucking consult your dentist.
Tips for helping your child stop thumbsucking:
Praise your child for not sucking.
Children often suck their thumbs when feeling insecure or needing comfort. Focus on correcting the cause of the anxiety and provide comfort to your child.
For an older child, involve him or her in choosing the method of stopping.
Your dentist can offer encouragement to your child and explain what could happen to their teeth if they do not stop sucking.
If the above tips don’t work, remind the child of their habit by bandaging the thumb or putting a sock on the hand at night. Your dentist or pediatrician may prescribe a bitter medication to coat the thumb or the use of a mouth appliance.
