How can I increase my memory power, I can not remember things which are said to me just 5 minutes ago?

Dear Sayed, Welcome to lybrate. Memory and mind power depends mainly on three aspects. Understanding, storage and recollection. To understand what you are studying, you must be able to be attentive or concentrate. Concentration is possible when you are interested in that subject. Creative way of learning can help you concentrate and understand easily. When you are able to understand and concentrate, it is stored within your brain. If you read more and more it will be store in long term memory. Third part is retrieval. Whenever you want to retrive what you learned and stored, your brain gets the request, searches the database and retrieves the information for you. The retrieval may prove to be difficult if you are anxious, stressed, worried or tired physically or mentally. Retrieval is more easy when you are relaxed and healthy. Brain needs nutrients to keep itself sharp. Fruits, vegetables and dry fruits provide much needed nutrients for your brain. Include at least one fruit in your daily diet. Physical exercises, entertainment, hobbies, relaxation, memory games like sudoku etc help keep your memory sharp and active. You may consult a psychologist online or in person for advice, counseling and therapy.Take care.

My dad is having cervical myelopathy, neurogenic bladder, severe constipation, are on catheter, numbness in arms and ...
Clinical depression in any neurological patient is common. Since your father tried to attempt suicide also, it is severe depression. He needs antidepressant treatment. It will take around 3 weeks for him to improve and agree for surgery. The surgeons will wait since they want your dad to improve after operation. With depression even after operation, the improvement will be slow. Please request your neurosurgeon only to find a psychiatrist for your dad at the earliest. Otherwise you can also find one in online site. Please don't leave him alone at any time. Remove all objects which he can take to attempt like tablets, knife, etc.

Hello doctor, I'm very much attracted to girls but I'm really afraid to talk to them. Even a very casual touch makes me go crazy about them. I feel extremely excited even when they stand near me. How to overcome this? Is this a kind of social phobia? Help me. Thank you.

Dear. I understand your concerns. I went through the details. You are correct. Afraid to talk to ladies, feeling crazy with even a casual touch, excitement while standing near to girls etc are symptoms of social phobia which happens during adolescent period. You should also understand this type fo social phobia is normal, common and can be treated 100% with the help of counseling and psychotherapy. I request you to consult a psychologist for the above. As an interim measure, you should stop worrying about this. I hope this answer satisfies you. I am available for further clarifications. Take care.

Have tried a lot to quit smoking but can't quit. Please tell me the fastest way to avoid smoking and tell medication as well if possible. Thank You.

General Physician,
Best age to stop smoking is before 40 ,In fact do not start all Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs/ weed, avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40 31st May is “World No Tobacco Day” Quitting smoking before the age of 40 is associated with larger decline in premature death than stopping it at a later date. Best age therefore to stop smoking is before 40. However, stopping smoking even after the age of 50 is still associated with lower risk of death as compared to those who continue to smoke. Even in smokers aged 80 years or more, quitting smoking appears to reduce some mortality.

It seems there are immense negative thoughts & pessimism inside you which are disturbing you lot. You better talk to your attending doctor about your feeling low & lonely with depressed thoughts, & that the symptoms are persisting even after taking medicines for anxiety & Depression. Your doctor will then re evaluate you & adjust your medicines accordingly. Take the prescribed medicines regularly & in time. You can also go for counseling sessions to get relief from those disturbing symptoms faster. Along with, take the following measures to help yourself: •Try to lead an active life & maintain a healthy lifestyle. Go for a walk, exercise regularly, do some yoga or relaxation techniques daily. •Try to be contented with what is in hand. Over expectation is usually harmful. •Set goals which are realistic & within your capability & try to pursue them. •Do not spend time alone. Spend time with friends, family members or well wishers with whom you feel comfortable & positive. •Read motivational books & quotes. •Spend some time daily recollecting the good moments in your life. •Try to evaluate things practically & rationally. •Avoid people who spreads negativity or demoralize you. •Avoid watching or reading mind disturbing things like violence, crime, horrors etc. •Maintain a daily routine. •Pursue your hobbies or keep a pet. •Every day spend some time with nature & try to feel its beauty. •Stay away from substance of abuse like alcohol, cannabis, inhalants, drugs etc. •If any problem is there in your life, put your maximum effort & try to solve it. Work to enhance your problem solving skills & coping skills. If you are not able to solve any problem yourself, discuss about it with a well wisher or take professional help. •Keep reminding yourself the fact that people with bigger problems exist in this world. Then your problem will seem trivial. •Read or watch comedies & laugh to your fullest. •Above all, keep reminding yourself that life is precious & one is gifted with this life for once only. Every moment, every day is precious & life once lost can never be regained back. Wish you speedy recovery.

My daughter aged 9 yrs is having a low memory power and forgets answers at the exam hall. Please advise me the ways of boosting the memory power.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
She is probably having some anxiety during exams for various reasons. At this age, for her to experience exam fear means that there may be very high expectations from the parents, or she has a nervous disposition, or the portions are too much for her mental level, or there is some stress in the home. This is an age when she must enjoy school, and have a lot of time for play. In fact the very idea of doing away with exams for children is to reduce this kind of pressure. There is also a suggestion that children should not be detained in class in the early years of schooling. These are all measures to return childhood to our children and make life a lot easier. So I suggest that even if the school has these exams let your child perform at her pace and convenience. These pressures will tell on her psychologically and emotionally, later. Help her to read a lot and give her time to play. As time goes by you can work on improving her memory by reducing all the stress around her as much as possible. In the meantime get her puzzles, jigsaws, and little memory cards all with a play-way approach to make it easy for her and also to improve memory. Talk to her teacher about what is going on with her in school and she will enlighten you with some useful information.

I am 28 years old female. I am a married woman. This is our third year after marriage and we have a 7 months old daughter. We both love each other but still we are fighting for some things and are not living happy. I am a working woman so I am staying away from my husband. I live with my parents. He works in other place and so he lives alone. My mother in law stays in other place. I have been sending my salary to my mother in law soon after getting married. She takes care of everything and my husband do not involve in any financial matter. I have been asking him to start savings for our future but all went in vein. Now we have a daughter and we have to take care of her future and so I asked hm to save one salary for our baby and use other salary for household expenses. My MIL is staying in our own house and there is no need for paying rent and so the expenses would me maximum of 15000. So I asked him to use his salary for expenses and I will save my salary for baby. I will just keep 10000 for my and baby expenses. But still he is asking to send 20000 for my mother in law. I can save only 20000 for baby. I am not sure for how long will I work. So I want to save something before I quit my job. So we are getting argued every time. I don't know why he is not understanding me. If there is a real requirement I don't have any problem in sending money. And we don't have savings since our marriage though I sent my salary every month. So I am very much worried about savings. As I am staying away from my husband and working I am missing my life with him. So at least I should feel happy if there are savings for our baby. Is my thinking process is wrong?

Three years is very short time in marriage and in those 3 years also you stayed separately from husband and in that you had a pregnancy as well. Think about the lack of connectivity and bonding in relationship. Also it shows poor intimate relationships because you stay away from husband and on top of that there is confusion about financial matters which involves your mother-in-law as well. Now when there is lack of bonding in marriage, confusion bounds to happen. To begin with, first of all have an open interaction with husband without blaming each other. Then Find a common ground of quality personal relationship between both of you. If you are unable to do it own your own then you need to connect with a Marriage and Relationship expert to open your heart out and to find guidance & support. Later your husband may also be involved in interaction with expert. Please Beware and avoid involving any close relative or parents in this interaction because close relative from any-side will further complicate the matter because they may take sides. This is crisis situation because you appear frustrated. So move on quickly if you are looking for quality relationship with husband. You may contact me as well for interaction either in person or online via this website. All the best, Take care.
