Doctor I am having severe depression I feel a lot of anger on small things and I keep on thinking about the past all the time. I want to be happy but I feel how could I be happy I feel low through out the day. I have 2 kids 11 and 9. I often forget many of the things of daily doing. I need help.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Sounds to me like you are into an anger related depression. If you have not been on medication and you want to remain so, you will have to work very hard to recover from this condition. You must first of all seek the help of a counselor, ideally. If that person thinks that you need to meet with a doctor you will need to do so and cooperate right through. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love: find someone to love and to love you back, if you are not already married. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive everyday and learn to be contended with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

I am 23 old 5.11" I have been smoking since 2010 but from last 3-4 months I have been smoking 10 to 12 sticks per day but now am tired of itI m finding it very tough to quitcan you suggest some medicines to cope up with damage done by the ciggerate.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
There are some medicines to help you with quitting the smoking but only for the initial stages. You will need to meet with a doctor to get that prescription. The habit can be very difficult because of the many conditions attached to smoking. In fact these conditions can exist all through the day unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important reason. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. All the damage you incurred earlier because of the smoking can be reverted back to normal in quick time.

Sir, My wife is affected by depression aged about 54. Refusing to attend a hospital/psychiatrist for treatment/consultancy. It is very difficult to manage her daily. Please give the solution.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
If she is suicidal also, she needs treatment without her co operation. You need to admit her forcibly in any licensed hospital to take care of un co operative patients. One of the magistrates will sign the request from psychiatrist or hospital. Two psychiatrists independently need to sign that she is mentally ill and needs treatment for her own safety or others safety. One can approach police or special ambulances for mentally ill (available at bangalore) to take her to hospital. Once she is diagnosed and treated, she will become co operative and she will be given psychoeducation of depression and its treatment.

Hi there ~ Thank you for the detailed description of your problems. It certainly is a fact that many students react to stress the way that you are reacting if the work they have on hand is more than what one can handle. Everyone is different and so are you. It seems like you continue to point fingers at the first drink of alcohol that you had to have been the source of your problems. I strongly believe that you are not probably right in saying so about yourself. I can suggest many techniques for you to be able to perform better, however I also believe that medication management is what you need to deal with your problem of poor concentration. I hope this helps. Take care and have a lovely day!

I cannot stand loud talking or more noise. I get irritated and often scream. I get tense if my work as per my plan does not go.

BHMS
Homeopath, Secunderabad
You need to be realistic and analyse why you are getting irritated. Accept your short tempered nature and slowly work towards improving your nature. Get yourself checked for hypertension and diabetes. Become active and focus on your work and hobbies, which will give you confidence to overcome your shortcomings. Daily exercise (yoga, pranayam, meditation) can bring wonderful results in no time. Stop being a perfectionist and accept your errors and also of others with humbleness. Bring in humour in life.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Anger and aggression are emotions. These emotions are triggered when you are frustrated, disappointed, stressed or anxious. Emotions, once triggered, should be vent off. You should learn not to get angry even when there are apt circumstances around. Holistic methods like meditation and breathing exercises should help you. Take care.

I am 42 years old and taking psychiatric medicines sine last 10 years but still not feeling good. I have been taking multiple drugs for that, my doctor has said me that I am suffering with bipolar disorder, depression, etc. I need assistance. I am unable to do my routine work at office efficiently, forgets things, get irritated on pin pricks, doziness, After forgets the road routes and what happened earlier. Burning sensation in eyes, etc.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Since a psychiatrist has already diagnosed you as bipolar disorder, the information you are providing is not sufficient to either agree or disagree with what he has diagnosed. You need to have a second opinion if symptoms do not come to remission, since in bipolar in 6-8 weeks there is total remission with treatment.

Smoking and Your Teeth

Smoking and Your Teeth

Smoking increases the risk of heart disease and lung cancer, but even before those potentially deadly diseases develop, regular smokers are more likely to begin losing their teeth. A new study from britain's university of birmingham and the german institute of human nutrition determined that men who smoke are 3.6 times more prone to lose their teeth than non-smokers, while among women smokers the risk is 2.5 times higher. The researchers based their conclusions on data gathered from 23, 376 participants in a long-term study in germany. Part of the problem is that smoking is a strong risk factor in promoting tooth decay and gum disease, both of which can lead to tooth loss. The investigators noted that smoking can mask bleeding gums, a key symptom of gum disease, so that a smoker's gums may look healthier than they actually are. The good news is that quitting smoking can reverse the increased risk of tooth loss, although the researchers wrote that it could take more than 10 years for the risk to equal that of someone who never smoked.

When you see that she doesn't care for you then it's high time that you move on. She is behaving improperly but you need to take note of the same that due to your girlfriend you are also not sincere with your studies. When something doesn't give you peace and happiness then don't get into it.

I always feels upset. Whenever I want to study I am not able to concentrate on my study. So tell me my solution.

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology

Dear , if you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with" effective learning" techniques. Take care.
