You might be suffering from shin splints. After jogging or running (specially for beginners) the muscles and flesh along the edge of the shin bone become inflamed, so it hurts to walk, run, or jump. Jogging on hard surfaces can bring this on. You are more likely to get shin splints if you have flat feet or your feet turn outward. Some tips to deal with this condition : 1.Rest your legs, do not jog when in pain. 2. Ice pack application for 10 mins at least 4 times a day. 3. Anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen to be taken round the clock for 3 days. 4. Stretching and warm up to be done before jogging or running. 5. Gradual and step wise increase in physical activity. 6. Avoid running on hard surfaces. 7. Wear good quality running shoes. For further queries please consult again.

I'm 30 years old. I have vertigo. I feel very giddy tired and have a neck ache. What should I do?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You have mentioned pain in neck region as the main problem. You are actually very young to have persistent pain. If there is only localized pain in neck region with no other associated symptoms like radiating pain, numbness, paresthesias etc, and no systemic symptoms like fever, loss of appetite, loss of weight etc, my advice to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - to maintain proper posture of your neck while working and sleeping and observing principles of neck ergonomics - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or even tab paracetamol which suits you - intensive physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied 3-4 times in a day - analgesic spray for local application like dynapar qps spray can be used and is easily available. If there is no improvement in 2-3 weeks with this conservative management, we will need to evaluate you further in form of dynamic x rays to look for any instability as a cause for pain and some blood investigations to rule out any deficiencies etc. You can also have vertigo due to neck issues and other causes as well, you can take tab vertin or stugeron on sos basis if you unbearable vertigo but in that case we ill have to get mri cervical spine done in your case. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Hello Mr. Lybrate-user, since how long you are having this knee pain? where exactly does it hurt you while you play football. It's very crucial to know the exact location of the pain at the knee. There could be various reasons behind your problem. Avoiding proper warm-up and cool down can be the precipitatory cause. Inadequate water intake could be another reason. Weak knee and hip & tfl muscles could be another reason. There could be some old biomechanical misalignment or subluxation in the knee like anterior or posterior rotaion of the tibia with wedging which could be adding undue torque on the meniscus or any other soft tissue structure. These are quite common in players and youngsters who are physically active. To rule out the exact cause you need to get a xray of your knee done. In short, visit a skilled orthopedic manual therapist who can diligently handle this and give proper correction manipulative therapy. If it's not a subluxation issue then it won't be a big issue to deal with. To deal with it as of now, you can apply hot pack before and after playing. Apply nupatach 200 at the painful area of knee 6 hours before playing and knee it for 24 hours. This is a temporary solution, get your knee fixed. Good luck hope it helps. Thanks.

Apply hot fomentation twice daily. Avoid bending in front. Postural correction- sit tall, walk tall. Extension exercises x 15 times x twice daily - lying on tummy, take left arm up for 3 seconds, then bring it down, right arm up for 3 seconds, bring down. Bring right leg up, hold for 3 seconds, bring it down. Then right leg up and hold for 3 seconds and bring it down. Repeat twice a day- 10 times. Bhujang asana? lie flat on your stomach, keeping the palms out, bend the neck backward, take a deep breath and while holding it for 6 seconds, raise the chest up. Release breath and relax your body. Repeat the exercise 15 times twice daily. Core strengthening exercises- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.

Repeadetaly backache is going on with my wife after child born around 10 Years ago.

Repeadetaly backache is going on with my wife after child born around 10 Years ago.
Hi, as pain have started after child birth (presuming its to be normal delivery. You should know that during pregnancy, the body releases a hormone that relaxes the joints and ligaments in pelvis to make it easier delivery. Unfortunately, this instability also increases the risk of inflammation and joint misalignment, which can lead to lower back pain with time. The physical stress of parenting or caring for infants and young children can impart tremendous biomechanical strain. Daily repetitive stress from tasks that require lifting the child or infant can compromises spinal integrity. Repetitive injury to the disc, joints, muscles and ligaments of the spine can result from chronic lifting, twisting and poor posture. I suggest she should get precautionary mri done or other investigation to check for any other injury (like disc prolapse or infection or v. Prolapse). Check with gynecologist, orthopedician or physiotherapist. Advice: 1) to relieve pain suggest hot pack, ift and swd for 10 days. 2) specific pelvic floor and back core muscle exercise regime after complete assessment. Pointers: 1) she should avoid lifting heavy object 2) be posture aware, while doing daily routine work. 3) avoid staying in position for long time like avoid continuous standing or sitting. Thanks.

I am a 37 yrs old male and I am suffering with back pain since 3 months. please advice.
Hi back pain usually occurs due to prolonged sitting in a bad posture hence the pressure on the back increases and you get back pain as your muscle don't support any undue pressure so for this now you can start with a hot packs for ten minutes twice a day and also start strengthening your core muscles.

No further investigation needed if you know that sugar is under control. After all more investigations will not have corrective properties. It will only analyze the damage. Neuropathy, retinopathy etc progress even when sugar is under control by allopathic drugs. I recommend support of herbal combos for strengthening nerves and combating general weakness in sugar patients. Initially your current medicine shouldn't be interrupted.
