Sometimes you may find yourself stuck in a rut that is frustrating and mind numbing. If you’re in such a situation, it could be an indication that you need to reprogram your mind. This will help you set realistic goals for yourself and lead a more fulfilling life. Before getting to how to reprogram your mind, it is important to first understand how the mind works.

Mind vs Brain

In colloquial terms, the words mind and brain may be used interchangeably but, the two are in fact not the same. While the brain is a physical organ, the mind can be described as a virtual entity present within each cell of our body and extended to minimum 2 inches outside body. That is why mind controls body. It is more like a collection of thoughts, emotions, imagination and memories. When compared to a computer, the brain acts as the hardware while the mind is the software within it.

The Three States of Mind 
The mind can be categorized into three states:

  1. Conscious
  2. Subconscious
  3. Unconscious

Actions that need you to make an effort and think about what you are doing are said to be performed by the conscious mind. The subconscious mind refers to information that is accessible to you when needed and otherwise not something you pay attention to. For example, when walking down the road to your house, your mind subconsciously creates landmarks. The unconscious mind consists largely of primitive instincts and memories from early childhood that may not be easily recalled.

Unconscious mind also contains memories from past lives. That has been proved by father of modern hypnotherapy, Dr. Brian Weiss. Thus hypnotherapy under supervision is a great tool for reprogramming your mind. Embedding positive cognitive scripts / suggestions through hypnosis helps in reprogramming mind. 

A majority of our daily functions are controlled by the unconscious mind. The memories stored in our unconscious mind are responsible for many decisions that we make based on beliefs. Thus, training the unconscious can help reprogram the mind and make it more productive.

Here are three easy tips to help you make your unconscious more efficient.

  1. Meditation: Meditation not only calms the mind and reduces stress, but can also help train the unconscious mind. Meditation helps increase your ability to concentrate on an activity and achieve the desired level of mental focus. This, in turn, helps develop new ideas and increases your belief in yourself.
  2. Visualize what you want to achieve: Merely telling yourself that you want to do better is not enough. You need to set a goal for yourself and visualize it to begin working towards it. Create a visual board of the type of house you would like to live in, the lifestyle you would like to have, the job you would like to have etc. avoid generalized visions and be specific about what you want.
  3. Hypnotherapy: Hypnotherapy is a safe, brief and effective way to deal with many emotional and anxiety-related issues, such as those listed on the right. It enables you to deal with your own mental challenges and blocks, so that you can build on your strengths and take control of your life. Many of us may feel stressed out in our daily lives without knowing why, actually the real problem is the stressful situation is that we are enduring, either in our minds or in reality.
Identifying stressors is not easily done for most people, while some of us can point to different stress factors that have occurred recently in our lives, others have no idea why we are stressed.
If you are feeling" stressed out" sit down with a pen and paper and try to identify the causes of your stress. In most cases, it will be more than one different problem that is causing stress.
Keeping a journal of your day to day activities and how you feel periodically throughout the day is also a great idea. Think about the different people with whom you interact and how you feel about each interaction.
Once you have identified the source of your stress, you can then make a determination on how you can handle the stress that is affecting your daily life.
Need to understand that some of the stressors you will be able to control, others you will not be able to do anything about. But in order to help yourself you are going to have to know what are the causes of your stress. Often we don't realize that we are in control because we feel so out of control at the time of stress, but the tools are there, you just have to use them.

Although there is no single reason why someone may have suicidal tendencies, certain things can increase the risk. An individual is more likely to have suicidal thoughts if he has a mental health condition like depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. The vulnerability also increases in cases of alcoholism, drug abuse or poor job security. It may not be possible to prevent suicidal thoughts, but keeping one's mind healthy with regular exercise, healthy eating and maintaining friendships can help one deal better with stress. 

It can be very upsetting, when someone says things which sound as if the person is considering suicide. One may not be sure what to do to help,  as to whether one should take talk of suicide seriously or if intervention might make the situation worse. Taking action is always the best choice. One of the best things one can do if someone is feeling suicidal is to encourage them to talk about their feelings and to listen to what they say. One can provide the best help by listening and not being judgemental. If the person has been diagnosed with a mental health condition like depression, one can take advice from his care team. 

One should avoid offering solutions. While listening, do not give in to the temptation of providing a solution. One should ask open ended questions so that the person remains in control and expresses his feelings. On the contrary, it will offer an opportunity to talk about feelings, which may reduce the risk of acting on suicidal feelings. Ensure that the person is not left on his own, if there is immediate danger. One cannot always tell when a loved one or friend is considering suicide, so one must be on the lookout for warning signs. The warning signs could be talking about suicide, buying or stocking pills, withdrawing from social life, increase in alcohol or drugs, personality changes like severely agitated and saying goodbye to people as if seeing them for the last time. It is also important that one does not make judgements about how a person is thinking or behaving. 

After listening to their feelings, one may feel that certain aspects of their thinking and behaviour are making their problems worse. But pointing this out will not be particularly helpful to them. Reassurance, respect and support will only help someone during these difficult periods. As a final note, one must realise that talking to someone about their feelings is not long lasting and can help them feel safe and secure temporarily. A professional help can provide the long-term support to help someone overcome their suicidal tendencies. That will the person to deal with the primary issues behind someone's suicidal thoughts, besides offering advice and support.

There are a number of polychrests (medicines of many uses) often prescribed constitutionally, which are particularly appropriate for different sorts of worry and stress. The following I have used to good effect on many occasions: Lycopodium for the patient who greatly underestimates their abilities and anticipates every ordeal however small with pessimism; Silica patients are terrified of failure and Calc carbs are just too weak and exhausted to attempt anything! These medicines are only effective, of course, if they “fit” the patient so far as his whole constitution and make up is concerned.

Hello sir / mama my self aniket basically I am student and I was good at all. But since few months I have been suffering with mentally retarding problem like I am studying ad working on work but not getting results. Like I have known all things but at the exam I am blanked. Now these things have become so major that I can't be normal. Some time heart says I should give up .not to see ahead, no need of survive such kinds of thoughts are drawing In my mind. Hello lybrate-user, If you were good at something before and you are good now, then there must be something in between the two spaces in your life. This needs to be explored. But whatever be the case, there is no reason for you to be thinking of such extreme thoughts. There will be other challenges in life and a good thing will be to pick up the pieces in your life and think of tomorrow as a new day. Hi my wife age 27. Has a problem of depression and she had taken sulpitac 100 mg tablet for mare than 5 months and she was fine. Now the problem is different, due to the side effects of tablet ,her period has stopped. Then we consulted the gynecology doctor. They asked to stop the tablet since is prolactin hormone level is very high around 70. Hence we stopped the tablet. Now she started thinking more negatively. And was asking questions about previous accurate of problems. She started blaming at me that due to you this problem has occurred. She was complaint me that you are doing something wrong against her. In background​. She is keep on complain me. Please suggest what to do.

I am 49 years old. I am diagnosed for ocd. My pulse rate increases and I develop vertigo in my head without my knowledge. Hi. I am 32 years old, three days before I feel anxiety my bp is 155/105,(no sugar, no old bp case, I consult doctor and gone through ECG. Reports are normal but my cholesterol level is high (ldl) Cardiologist suggest me telma40 and nebistar 5 in morning and in evening razel f10, now I feel normal but some time I feel anxiety for 10 to 15 minutes than normal and some time I feel my some pulling aur we say (khichavat) in hindi on left side in chest but for a moment than normal. Could be that you are stressed or could be due to anxiety or hypertension. U can get years BP checked, thyroid and blood-sugar (through a competent physician). Also use some form of yoga or relaxation and spend some quality time with years friends & family.

Mood Disorders - Know the Common Types!

Mood disorders are common psychological problems that affect a vast portion of the human populace all over the world every year. These occur when there is a shift or imbalance in a person's psyche which affects his or her daily function and interpersonal relations in varying degrees. Each individual is affected by these conditions in a different capacity and responds to them in a distinct manner.

Mood disorders generally manifest themselves as fluctuations in a person's temperament. It is triggered by various factors. These mental illnesses range from mild to severe, the latter requiring urgent psychological counseling and treatment. A mild condition may even develop into a painful and chronic one without any form of remedial intervention.

What are the most common types of mood disorders?

There are many distinctive categories of mood disorders that can affect a person. The most commonly occurring ones are as follows:

  1. Major depressive disorder
  2. Bipolar disorder
  3. Dysthymia
  4. Cyclothymia
  5. Seasonal affective disorder (sad)

Major depression is the most frequently occurring type of mood disorder. It causes mental and emotional turmoil, as well as physical anguish. Those affected by it may experience a single episode in isolation or multiple episodes over a period of time. The milder version of this condition is known as dysthymia.

Bipolar disorder is a comparatively rare condition that causes alternating states of extreme mania and depression. It is also known as manic-depressive illness. The mild version of this is called cyclothymia.

Seasonal affective disorder or sad is a depressive disorder that is known to affect those living in colder climes. It is caused generally by the lack of warmth and light, the onset of which begins in late autumn and lasts till the end of winter.

What causes a mood disorder?

Mood disorders are very difficult to diagnose as they can be caused by an assortment of triggers and the symptoms are not always apparent. This is particularly true in the case of dysthymia and cyclothymia.

Some of the usual factors that lead to mood disorders are:

  1. Chronic stress and anxiety
  2. Anomalies in the functioning of the nervous system
  3. Prolonged periods of isolation
  4. Genetics
  5. Childhood abuse and trauma
  6. Ineffectual coping mechanisms
  7. Insufficient nourishment/malnutrition

In most cases, a combination of multiple factors usually leads to the development of mood disorders and other mental illnesses.

With exam time around the corner, the stress is on both parents and students. Some kids spend very less time with books and assimilate all that is there in the books. Other children may have a hard time trying to focus on studies and even harder time in recollecting what they have studied.

What can help improve focus, concentration, and memory? Try some of these tips and identify what works for you and build your own rules.

  1. Create a suitable environment: Some claim that they study better with the TV or radio on, this is often not true. Get rid of background noises, phone ringtones, etc. This creates “division of attention,” where there is no 100% focus on books. Sit in a quiet environment without any disturbance for better focus. Red walls are believed to improve concentration, so try a red wallpaper, red computer desktop, etc. Sit in the same place and get into a regular routine of studying.
  2. Draw up a schedule or timetable: Try to finish the tougher subjects or topics first by giving adequate time for these.
  3. Treat yourself: When you have thoroughly understood a topic or cracked a practice exam well, treat yourself to a bar of chocolate or a video song. You begin to do better in anticipation of these treats.
  4. Include breaks: A break of 15 minutes every two hours is very essential for the brain to process the information that was pumped in and to get ready for the next lot.
  5. Work on improving brain power: Learning (memorizing or analyzing) stimulates the brain and improves brain power. So, people who are constantly studying can claim to have better brain power.
  6. Build a concentration clock: With our attention spans spiralling down, this is very important. Force yourself to sit in one place and study. If you have the urge to break, try to delay it, first by two minutes, then five minutes, and then 10 minutes. This will gradually help you overcome the urge to take breaks.
  7. Have healthy food: Eating healthy and nutritious food is another habit to develop, if you want to pep up your brain. Ensure your food has sufficient minerals and vitamins. Try eating fresh food and dairy products adequately.
  8. Follow a systematic sleep routine: If you are not someone who likes to sleep for fixed eight hours, begin doing it. This works wonders for the body and mind like very few other things.
  9. Exercise regularly: This improves blood circulation to the brain and improves brain functioning. So be it cycling or running, gymming or swimming, take an exercise break. Yoga or meditation are equally efficient.

Whether you’ve had a love marriage or an arranged marriage, it is impossible for two people to live together without experiencing a conflict of opinions at some point or the other. After all, each of us has our own unique personalities, habits and idiosyncrasies. Thus the key to a successful marriage is not finding ways to avoid conflicts, but discovering how to deal with them. Here are a few tips that could help you build a stronger relationship with your spouse.

Communicate with Your Partner:

Nobody except you can ever know what you’re feeling unless you share it with them. Many conflicts begin when one partner expects the other to be able to read their mind. If something is bothering you, don’t express yourself rudely, but sit the other person down and explain what and how you are feeling. Listening to what your partner has to say is equally important. Keep an open mind and try putting yourself in the other person’s shoes.

1. Be respectful: Feeling hurt is no excuse to start abusing or blaming the other person. Understand that if you begin an argument by shouting at your partner, he or she will turn defensive and not be able to completely understand what you are trying to say. Belittling a person can also shift focus away from the actual problem. Respect your partner and do not start an argument in front of other people or put him or her down in company.

2. Pick the right time: Never start an argument when you or your spouse are stressed (learn the ways to control everyday stress) or tired. In such a frame of mind, it is easier to get irritated with the other person than understand their views. When you are trying to resolve a conflict, the problem and your spouse should have your complete attention. Hence, don’t try and multitask by cooking or catching up with work while resolving a conflict. This applies even if you are talking to your spouse over the telephone.

3. Take time out: Tempers often flare when talking about a sore point. However, be aware that getting angry (learn more about to control extreme anger) or agitated will not solve anything. The moment you find yourself or your partner feeling too upset or negative, take a time out from the situation. Tell your partner that you need some time and walk away quietly. You can resume your conversation when you are both feeling calmer. However, do not use this time out as an excuse to avoid resolving the issue.

I have a bad habit of smoking, a minimum of 6 to 8 cigarettes per day since 3 years. Sometimes when I cough from the throat to spit I notice a bit of blood in my spit. It does not happen always but sometimes like once in a month. Is this a sign of throat or lung cancer? Please let me know any precautions or tests I can do.

Hi dear. Pain of breakup is very hard to carry. Specially when past memories are haunting us due to our loneliness. If that was your first relationship and it went for sufficiently long period then it will lead to even more pain. What I can see from your message is that you are not getting a new person with whom you can fall in love with and have a healthy relationship. Due to this previous breakup is giving more pain by causing loneliness. You have given your tries to make new relations but it also did not work. This has reduced your self-confidence and made you feel incapable of forming a relationship. Your current feelings are quite natural in thia state of mind. When we see other people around busy in happy relationships, our loneliness reminds us of our weaknesses and limitations. If your overall self-confidence has been effected, and you are not able to concentrate on any work then you must consult a clinical psychologist asap. But if you only feel lack of ability in context of relationships, then you must first feel good about yourself and see how you are a girl-in-demand around your circle. Believe me, its just your perception that you are not able to sustain a relation because you miss your bf or may be you think previous relation was in some way better than this lonliness. You still have the ability to attract guys and many guys would love to be in a relationship with you. You need to come out of this mental state that you can not be in a relationship and work on makjng new relations and try new guys without losing courage. One or the other guy would definitely fall for you and you will be able to have a successful relationship.

My mom is suffering from depression from last 10 months. I had dropped my mba and then resigned from my job after she had a cardiac arrest and at home now to take care of her. I will be restarting with my mba from 1st june. I feel sleeplessness and get worried daily usually in the night time. How do I know whether I am depressed or not? I really need help urgent. My mood is always bad in the night time. Due to some gastric problem I had consulted a doctor who helped me with an antacid medicine and anti depressant. He said the gastric problem is recurring because of your mental stress and anxiety. Please help what is wrong with me I am just not able to figure out.

Hi, Thanks for writing in, welcome to the forum. You are obviously having problems adjusting to the troubled circumstances in your family/ life. There are certain symptoms of depression that you are reporting, but it is not clear if you have a depressive disorder or what is known as an adjustment disorder. This is important because antidepressant medicines have no role in adjustment disorder whereas they may have a role in a depressive disorder. Therefore, it is important to have a proper evaluation by a psychiatrist. It is tempting to have a quick, short cut kind of a solution and is only human and natural. But in the interest of your career and long term perspective, an evaluation by a mental health professional is certainly warranted and advisable. Do not neglect food and drink. Practise some form of exercise for atleast 20-30 minutes 4-5 days a week. These will serve as first aid measures. Take care!
