7 Effects That Smoking Has on Sex!

7 Effects That Smoking Has on Sex!

Effects of Smoking on Sexual Health

Smoking, in general, has a negative effect on the human body. It can cause a host of disorders such as mouth cancer, blood pressure problems, and lung cancer. Smoking affects the sexual performance of both men and women.

Here are some effects that smoking has on sex :-

1. Impotence: Smoking can damage the blood vessels that lead to erectile dysfunction (a condition where the penis cannot sustain an erection).

2. Decrease in libido: Smoking can cause various physical problems such as stamina reduction and lack of desire for sex. An individual who smokes won't be able to give an optimal sexual performance and this can further lower satisfaction levels.

3. Erectile dysfunction: Smoking can cause problems related to the circulation of the blood in the body. It can narrow the arteries that supply blood and this is directly linked with erectile dysfunction.

4. Tissue damage: Smoking can damage the tissues inside the penis thus impairing your ability to have an erection during sexual intercourse.

5. Early onset of menopause: It can affect the estrogen (a sex hormone) levels in the female body; so, women who smoke tend to reach menopause early.

6. Reduction in penis size: It can reduce the penis size in men by damaging the blood vessels and the structure of the tissue around the penis. This is more common in younger men.

7. Reduction in stamina: Smoking can cause a reduction in the stamina, thus a person will not be able to perform well sexually. It can lead to fatigue and tiredness during sex.

Of course, there are a lot of therapies which can help you recover from the damage already happened because of smoking and prevent further damage.

Borderline Personality Disorder - Causes And Symptoms

Borderline Personality Disorder - Causes And Symptoms

Personality refers to the enduring and habitual patterns of behaviour, cognition, emotion, motivation and ways of relating to others. In simpler terms, it's the persona we have for the world to see and interact with. If these patterns or ways of relating with others become nonadaptive or pathological, a personality disorder develops.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is such a disorder of personality that causes mood swings, self-esteem issues, impulsive behavior and recurrent self-harm behaviour. It is very difficult to lead a normal life with these varied psychological issues.

The symptoms begin to appear from early childhood but they take a serious form only when one reaches adulthood. Issues with behavior and emotion are difficult to treat, people suffering from this illness should be willing to spend a lot of time and be dedicated towards his/her recovery. Through treatments and therapies, they do make significant improvements over time.

Causes

The exact cause of borderline personality disorder is not known but various reasons have been hypothesised as possible aetiology. Neuro-chemical disturbance in the brain, genetic vulnerability, some kind of childhood trauma like abandonment, death, neglect and/ or sexual abuse are probable causes of the disease. Prolonged and chronic stress/ anxiety may also lead to triggering of BPD symptomatology in vulnerable individuals later in life.

Symptoms

  • Prolonged dysthymia/ sadness
  • Feeling lonely/ misfit
  • Emotional dysregulation or Frequent mood swings
  • Significant interpersonal issues
  • Self-Injurious behaviour like making cuts in skin, burning, pricking etc

These symptoms are warning signs of borderline personality disorder and should be paid attention to:

  • Abandonment issue - People suffering from BPD have serious abandonment issues. They have an intense fear that they would be left alone and often act out to restrict their love ones from leaving. Sometimes their strategy is to not get too close to protect themselves from being left alone, so they appear aloof.
  • Disturbed self-image - People have self-esteem issues, they sometimes love or hate themselves or see themselves as evil. They have unclear goals, views, beliefs and often end up changing their friends, lovers, jobs, sexual identity frequently.
  • Dysfunctional relationships - It is very difficult to maintain a normal relationship for people with personality disorder. They tend to have quick short-lived relationships and get put off very easily which leads to a lot of heartbreak.

Suicidal tendencies and frequent self-harm behaviour like cutting skin using blades/ sharp objects are common.

Drugs and alcohol abuse, eating disorders and sexual promiscuity are other forms of self-destructive behaviour commonly encountered in this population. Extreme aggression, delusions, transitional Psychotic states are other possible symptoms of BPD.

Love and support from family and friends are crucial for patients suffering from this disease. Prolonged counseling sessions, therapies and the effort to break away from the chronic gloomy thoughts will definitely lead one to a better life.

Stress and Anxiety - Treat It With Homeopathy!

Stress and Anxiety - Treat It With Homeopathy!

The words 'stress and 'anxiety' are often used interchangeably, but bear different meanings in medical terms. Stress is caused by particular situations or events in one's life that makes one feel frustrated, angry, worried or even anxious. The stress response is different for each individual such that the same event can often elicit disparate responses. For example:

Public speaking excites some but terrifies others;

  1. Pressure from deadlines increases productivity in some but renders others paralyzed;

  2. Difficult circumstances in family or friend settings find some eager to take control and others stricken with panic;

  3. Social situations requiring people to voice their opinions are easy and comfortable for some but stressful for others;

  4. Changes in the work environment are welcomed by some but not by others.

Anxiety, on the other hand, is a general feeling of apprehension or fear, the source of which is not clearly defined. Anxiety disorders are a group of psychiatric conditions that cause excessive anxiety. They include:

  1. Generalized Anxiety: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a pattern of frequent, constant worry and anxiety over many different activities and events);

  2. Specific Phobia: A phobia is a persistent and irrational fear of a particular type of object, animal, activity, or situation that poses little to no actual danger;

  3. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), or behaviours that make them feel driven to do something (compulsions). Often the person carries out the behaviours to get rid of the obsessive thoughts, but this only provides temporary relief (not performing the obsessive rituals can cause great anxiety);

  4. Social Phobia: Social Phobia is a persistent and irrational fear of situations that may involve scrutiny or judgment by others, such as parties and other social events.

Those suffering from anxiety disorders display such symptoms on a regular basis and thus have difficulty with daily activities and relationships. These symptoms present themselves sporadically and often without warning.

In many cases, anxiety is developed by overdue stress that is no longer linked to a specific cause.

Homeopathic Treatment for Stress and Anxiety:

Homeopaths for the last two centuries have been constantly pushing this theory of mind and physical body being deeply interconnected and about fixing the problem at a mental level that can often help the other. In homeopathy, mental symptoms of the patient are given the utmost importance. Constitutional treatment in homeopathy combines the understanding of both the psycho and the physiological profile of the patient, with the psychological profile being given more importance.

Homeopathic Medicines for Stress:

A number of homeopathic medicines are effective in treating disorders where one who has learnt the wrong way of handling or responding to stress.

  1. Homeopathic remedies for stress - for the Classic - Type A Personality: Medicines such as Argentum Nitricum and Tarentula are very effective in controlling the accelerated behaviour of Type A people. Anxiety is very marked in such patients . Anxiety disorder is very effectively treated with homeopathy

  2. Homeopathic remedies for stress: When Anger is the Key symptom: Stress manifests through anger in some patients .Nux Vomica and Staphysgaria are meant for the easily angered and impatient ones.

  3. Homeopathic Medicines for stress: When grief is the cause: Ignatia and Natrum Mur where long-standing grief is a reason for stress response.

Homeopathic remedies for stress: for those who are 'Overworked': Kali phos is for a good individual who over-stretches himself physically and mentally. It is great homeopathic remedy for those have 'burnt out' their minds for over work.

Hi. Your symptoms are related to thyroid problem and anxiety. Stress is causing gas problem. For treatment of acidity and gas problem you require not only medicines but also strict lifestyle and dietary changes. Avoid spicy oily and outside food avoid heavy meals in dinner avoid excess tea/coffee sleep properly, do walk for sometime after meals rather than lying down flat. Take your meals at time. Take more of green vegetables, fruits and salad. For medications you can consult me online. Continue taking thyroid medications on time.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Apparently, most of your symptoms are due to high anxiety levels that needs to be controlled. First and foremost, I would advise that you meet up a physician in person who can clinically evaluate and recommend suitable anxiolytic as would deem appropriate. Simultaneously, from a dietary standpoint, do follow a streamlined and balanced diet (preferably Mediterranean) pattern & regular lifestyle with due emphasis on regular exercise, stress reduction and relaxation. Practicing yoga, breath control exercises & meditation daily for 15 - 20 minutes can help you relax and reduce anxiety. Simultaneously, try avoiding tea, coffee, carbonated soft drinks, dairy products including chocolates, alcohol, salt, greasy, sugary and other high calorie food stuff including fast foods etc all. Stay well hydrated and have at least 8 - 10 glasses of clear fluids through out the day. I hope this helps you get well soon. Do take care and all the very best. Sincerely

Asperger's Syndrome - Causes And Diagnosis

M.D Psychiatry , MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Asperger's Syndrome - Causes And Diagnosis

Asperger's syndrome has been found to affect people at a tender age. The augmented impacts of this syndrome are felt as you grow up. It is a neurological disorder falling under the scope of Autistic Spectrum Disorders. However, it is a milder form of autism and has similarly unidentifiable causes. A person afflicted with Asperger's syndrome will not exhibit stark signs of the disorder. These persons are usually smart and brilliant but face issues in communicating or interacting socially.

Factors that may result in this disorder

  • Genetic factors could also afflict you with such a syndrome. Thus, it is important to carry your family history while consulting a doctor.
  • Certain changes in a person's brain could create trouble.
  • Your body could be susceptible to external toxins: many times bacteria and viruses from a polluted environment can lead you to such a serious neurological condition.

Ways to diagnose Asperger's syndrome

  1. A doctor would concentrate on your child's speech: Language development can hint at many underlying health issues. Your child might fail to process speech around him or her which impairs its own speech.
  2. Exchanges in a social setup could be indicative of something: Children or adults could find social gatherings challenging. They feel awkward to interact with friends, relatives and colleagues. It takes a lot of effort on their part to exchange basic pleasantries. A doctor will be able to deduce from such symptoms.
  3. Facial expressions while conversing could help diagnosis: A person's facial expressions tell a lot about how they formulate or feel about things. Their words, at the same time, could be contrary. Counselors lay stress on frequent sittings to closely note the gestures made by a patient.
  4. Comprehension and coordination capabilities: Your child or loved one might find it difficult to handle motor regulated appliances. Comprehending instructions could also be a test. People suffering from Asperger's syndrome face problems in understanding simple things.
  5. Responding to change will also be taken into consideration: Patients trying to cope with this syndrome are usually not open to change. They take a very long time to adapt to a given way of life; a sudden change will thwart their idea of normalcy.

I hv been using clofranil 10 mg half a tablet for last 4 years, to control anxiety, can I stop using it now.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Thane
I hv been using clofranil 10 mg half a tablet for last 4 years, to control anxiety, can I stop using it now.
Please do not stop the medicine all by yourself. Please talk to your doctor and learn whether it will be a good idea to stop it. If the doctor's opinion is that you should continue, try to learn the reasons for the advice. Psychotropic drugs are useful treatments for psychiatric symptoms but often are not curative. To continue to get benefits of the treatment one needs to continue consuming the medicines. If you need to stop the medicine for some specific reason e.g. drug side effects or allergic reactions or adverse interactions with another drug that some other doctor has prescribed or contraindication in some other medical condition etc then ask the doctor to help you taper the dose off. Frequently, stopping psychotropic drugs all at once can produce a "drug withdrawal reaction" and to prevent that, one must taper the dose 'gradually'. Please ask the doctor to supervise the gradual taper. Only the doctor can tell you what 'gradual' can be, from his clinical experience.

If you have doubts about the correctness of the diagnosis you have at least 2 options i) ask for some time from the doctor (and offer to pay fair charges for the time allotted to you) and request the doctor to explain the diagnosis to you and why he makes that diagnosis in your case. Please don't argue with the doctor. Just listen to the doctor's explanation and ask for further clarification of medical terms if you have not understood. Your job is to understand the doctor's thought process and not to teach him medicine and diagnosis. Also ask him what his treatment plans are and over what period of time could you expect to see appreciable improvement. Also ask which symptoms/features of the illness will be helped by medicines and which ones will not be. Learn from the doctor what you can do to help the treatment in terms of diet, habits or discipline etc. Or the other option is ii) ask to be referred for a second opinion - a professional will readily do so. If the doctor refuses to refer you for a second opinion then do so yourself. Explain to the doctor that you do not wish to question his treatment and wisdom but you need to understand your illness better. If this doctor is the nearest psychiatrist to where you stay prefer to continue with him even after the second opinion unless he has bed-side manners which are not to your liking.

My son aged 27 years had a serious accident 10 years ago. He suffered from head injury and was operated upon. Though he is alright now, he gets angry very soon. Sometimes he reacts to things in a very inappropriate manner. Is there any link between the head injury and the anger etc.

MBBS, MD (AIIMS, Gold Medalist), Diploma in CBT (Glasgow)
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Hi, Thanks for writing in; welcome to the forum. Yes, it would certainly seem that there is a link. Many possibilities exist as to the exact nature of the problem that has resulted in inappropriate behavior and anger. The first thing that any expert would consider is an organic personality change or a frontal lobe syndrome that characteristically presents with the exact symptoms that you have mentioned. Other causes include anxiety, depressive and psychotic changes due to head injury. The exact diagnosis can be made based on a review of all records and an interview with the patient. The organic personality change can be improved to an extent with treatment. The other causes that I mentioned also can get better and have higher chances of getting better than the organic personality. Please consult an expert in person for exact diagnosis and management. Take care!
