Hi my father having blood pressure 190 and his leg is paining and some times he is experiencing no sense also, please let me know which specialist he should consult.

Hi my father having blood pressure 190 and his leg is paining and some times he is experiencing no sense also, please...
Just take him to a doctor (general medicine) so that he can be thoroughly checked and advised properly based on physical examination and some tests. It's basically to know if there is any reason for the high BP and wether all other vital organs are in good state of function. Please revert once the preliminary examination is done. The patient also has to take responsibility to adhere to the healthy habits and take adequate measures. A commitment to follow a healthy diet and exercise every day (even Yoga and pranayam for a few minutes ), and taking the prescribed medications regularly will help in stabilizing the BP faster and effectively.

lybrate-userji First check whether your blood pressure is under control or not. Pressure in chest while walking up slope is not a good sign and indicates probable heart disease. Similar symptoms can also be produced by low hemoglobin Take care.

Hi! When to go to doctor and check my blood pressure? Sometimes I feel that my blood pressure is law or high.
There are no specific timings. Better to go for a routine check up and let the doctor advise you. Some times it is better to take a few more readings for some days to confirm if the BP is really high. Certain tests can also be advised to help diagnose the problem.

High Blood Pressure: Foods That Lower Blood Pressure!

High Blood Pressure: Foods That Lower Blood Pressure!

Health experts do believe, and are promoting the same nowadays, that eating right is the best step to control high blood pressure other than regular medications. Who knows, if you are strong enough to control your lifestyle and eating habits, you may not need a long term medication after some time. The blood pressure may lower down naturally with improving health and weight.

Factors that elevate blood pressure in the body.

Before suggesting the right eatables for lowering the blood pressure, let’s look at the conditions which actually increase the blood pressure. They are:

  1. A coronary heart disease

  2. Stress

  3. Anxiety

  4. Work pressure or family and relationship troubles

  5. Obesity

  6. Cholesterol

  7. Other medical conditions like diabetes, depression, etc.

  8. Pregnancy

Each one has a toll on the body with resultant High Blood Pressure. With eating right you may gain a lot of control on the body.

Eating Right-

Here are some quick tips on eating right:

  1. Avoid excess salt intake. The more salt you take, the more sodium your body gets, and as a result BP elevates. When you eat readymade snacks, packaged foods and drinks with preservatives, check the nutritional information. Most of them contain high sodium. You may stop the intake of such foods or restrict them completely.

  2. Avoid oily and junk food. Avoid food with unsaturated or trans fats. These kinds of foods straightaway add to the fat deposits of the body, and make you obese or more obese. In such cases, the obesity and increased weight build a pressure on the heart to pump more, thus elevating blood pressure.

  3. Avoid excess caffeine. Caffeine comes in the body through coffee, tea, and aerated drinks. These beverages when restricted to only 1-2 intakes per day may help you lower the BP.

  4. Quit smoking, as this puts excess pressure on the lungs to breathe and thus the heart to pump.

  5. Avoid alcohol intake in excess amounts. Drinking more alcohol or frequent drinking can elevate BP.

Besides there are some good foods that can always help to lower or control BP. They are:

  • Plain, fat-free yoghurt or Greek yoghurt

  • White beans

  • Pork tenderloins

  • Small fishes like Tilapia

  • Bananas

  • Oats

  • Broccoli

  • Bell Peppers

These food items are designed by nature to reduce blood pressure or normalize blood pressure in the body. Hence, if you are trying heart and soul to eat right, then try these in your daily food to see positive results. Besides, exercising and reducing weight are the two other important steps to take, which complement the healthy diet and eating habits to lower the blood pressure with or without medication. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Cardiologist.

Common Tests For Coronary Artery Disease!

Coronary artery disease or CAD is the name given to the heart condition in which the major blood vessels that supply your heart with blood, oxygen and nutrients, also called coronary arteries, get blocked, damaged or diseased.

  1. Blockages usually happen when cholesterol-containing deposits called plaque deposit in your arteries. Plaque narrows the lumen of your coronary artery which means your heart gets lesser and lesser oxygen and nutrients to function properly.
  2. Inflammation is also to blame for coronary artery disease.

Common symptoms of CAD include

Common Diagnostic tests
When you go to a heart specialist, she will ask questions about your medical history and follow it up with a physical exam and order routine blood and diagnostic tests to confirm CAD like:

  1. Electrocardiogram (ECG): An ECG records electrical signals as they travel through your heart revealing evidence of a previous heart attack or one that’s happening. Holter monitoring is a type of ECG where you wear a portable monitor for 24 hours as you go about your normal daily activities. Abnormalities in the results suggest reduced blood flow to the heart signaling CAD.
  2. Echocardiogram:  This test uses sound waves to produce images of your heart. It helps your doctor determine whether all parts of your heart wall are contributing to your heart's pumping activity. If certain parts are moving weakly it can mean damage to muscle due to a heart attack or because of receiving too little oxygen- again signaling CAD.
  3. Exercise Stress test: This test is done by making you do exercises like walking on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike during an ECG. Sometimes, medication to stimulate your heart may be used instead of exercise.

This again detects areas in your heart that receive less blood flow.

  • Cardiac catheterization or angiogram. A special dye is injected into your coronary arteries to observe blood flow through your heart in a test known as an angiogram.
  • The dye is sometimes also injected into the arteries through a long, thin, flexible tube called catheter that is threaded through an artery in your leg to the arteries in your heart. This procedure is called cardiac catheterization. This test is very good in diagnosing CAD as the dye outlines narrow spots and blockages on the X-ray images of your heart.
  • Heart scans. Computerized tomography or CT can help your doctor actually see calcium deposits in your arteries that can be narrowing your arteries. If a substantial amount of calcium deposits are found, coronary artery disease could be the reason.
  • MRI scans are also done to diagnose CAD. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Cardiologist.

Management of Stroke: The Role of The Neurosurgery!

Management of Stroke: The Role of The Neurosurgery!

A stroke may be called a brain attack. It may happen to any person at any time. A stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is cut off. The brain cells become oxygen deprived due to the stroke and eventually die. Dead brain cells result in brain dysfunction due to which patients lose control over muscle and memory.

Strokes can be mild to life threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Stroke requires advanced care and should be treated by extensively qualified and experienced medical experts.

Neurosurgery satisfies all the required clauses for treatment of stroke and accounts for being one of the best ways for management of stroke. Renowned hospitals have a dedicated neurosurgical wing and a team of neurological specialists who know how to deal with stroke the best.

Vascular Neurology
This form of neurology focuses on patients who have undergone a stroke or have experienced symptoms of stroke. A multidisciplinary approach is taken for the prevention of recurrent cerebrovascular conditions.

Types of stroke

  1. Ischemic stroke: This kind of stroke occurs when there is a blockage in a blood vessel, which supplies blood to the brain. This form of stroke is the more common. The underlying cause of this stroke is known as atherosclerosis, which is a condition where fatty deposits occur in the walls of the blood vessels and cause blockage in them.
  2. Hemorrhagic stroke: This type of stroke occurs when a blood vessel gets weak and ruptures into the brain. This is caused by two types of weak blood vessels known as aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation.
  3. Transient ischemic attack: This type of stroke is also known as a mini stroke. These attacks occur because of blood clots. The blockage caused is temporary or transient in nature.

Treatment of Ischemic stroke

  1. Tissue Plasminogen Activator: This is one of the best ways to treat ischemic strokes. This medicine is given to the patient intravenously. It dissolves the blood clot and improves blood flow to the area of the brain which is affected. The medicine should be given within three to four hours after stroke symptoms appear.
  2. Endovascular procedure: This is a process by which the blood clot is removed using a catheter, which gets inserted into the area of the blocked blood vessel. It helps in restoring blood flow to that area.

Treatment of Hemorrhagic stroke

  1. Endovascular procedure: Several endovascular techniques and methods are used so that the weakening of blood vessels is reduced and less bleeding is caused.
  2. Surgical treatment: Different modes of neurosurgery may be undertaken to stop bleeding and for relieving pressure within the skull. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Neurosurgeon.

Yes you can take all these medications in place of telma. These all have the same compound. Telmisartan. Also you should do diet and exercise DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. It is an eating plan that is based on research studies sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). These studies showed that DASH lowers high blood pressure and improves levels of cholesterol. This reduces your risk of getting heart disease. The DASH Diet Emphasizes vegetables, fruits, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Includes whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, seeds, nuts, and vegetable oils. Limits sodium, sweets, sugary beverages, and red meats. Along with DASH, other lifestyle changes can help lower your blood pressure. YOU are suffering from PHOBIA(a psychological problem) A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder, defined by a persistent fear of an object or situation.[1] The phobia typically results in a rapid onset of fear and is present for more than six months. The affected person will go to great lengths to avoid the situation or object, typically to a degree greater than the actual danger posed. If the feared object or situation cannot be avoided, the affected person will have significant distress. Social phobia is when the situation is feared as the person is worried about others judging them. Social phobia and agoraphobia are often treated with some combination of counselling and medication.[5][6] Medications used include antidepressants, benzodiazepines, or beta-blockers. Dear lybrate-user. Don't worry about your BP. Your BP is only harmful when it is continuously high for over a period of one whole year. You are just 35. You will be anxious when you take BP for the first time with your automated monitor. This is called white coat hypertension. Your correct BP reading will be after atleast 10 minutes relaxation. High lymphocyte count, is an increase in white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are an important part of the immune system. They help fight off diseases, so it's normal to see a temporary rise in the number of lymphocytes after an infection. You may have a lymphocyte count that is higher than would normally be expected but have few, if any, symptoms. It's usually a harmless, temporary situation, as can occur after an illness. But it may represent something more serious, such as a blood cancer or a chronic infection. Your doctor may need to perform other tests to determine if your lymphocyte count is a cause for concern Your counts are not soo high to worry but if you are worried you can consult a hematologist and get further evaluation done.

What is hypertension and what are the characteristics of hypertension? To find out hypertension any tests is there?
Hypertension means a recorded BP higher than the normal range for age. There can be many reasons for it and it will be difficult to explain all that to you. To know if you have BP you can get your BP checked by a local doctor/cardiologist. And in case they find that you have hypertension then ask them to evaluate and suggest a plan of treatment. Hypertension may not have any signs at all or it may present with headaches, uneasy feeling, nose-bleeds, redness of eyes, breathless etc etc etc.

Diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse, is it curable? Is there any treatment other than replacement surgery?

MBBS, Dip.Cardiology, Fellowship in Clinical Cardiology(FICC), Fellowship in Echocardiology
Cardiologist, Ghaziabad
Diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse, is it curable? Is there any treatment other than replacement surgery?
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) occurs when one of your heart's valves doesn't work properly. The flaps of the valve are "floppy" and don't close tightly. Most people who have the condition are born with it. It also tends to run in families. Most of the time, MVP doesn't cause any problems. Rarely, blood can leak the wrong way through the floppy valve. This can cause Palpitations (feelings that your heart is skipping a beat, fluttering, or beating too hard or too fast) Shortness of breath Cough Fatigue, dizziness, or anxiety Migraine headaches Chest discomfort Most people who have mitral valve prolapse (MVP) don't need treatment because they don't have symptoms and complications. If you need treatment for MVP, medicines can help relieve symptoms or prevent complications. Very few people will need surgery to repair or replace the mitral valve. MVP puts you at risk for infective endocarditis, a kind of heart infection. Get back to me with the reports and a detailed history for a more personalized response.
