I have mild backaches for the past 2 months which I feel is due to the cold weather and me sitting in one position most of the time. When I take a steam bath, it goes off partially. What do you suggest since it is not a major issue. I am only around 30-32 years of age and also do cycling some times in the morning.

Hi, I have osteoarthritis and have been advised knee replacement. What are the alternatives?

MBBS
General Physician,
Hello lybrate-user, I hope you know minimal about this disease. As this disease cause cartilage degeneration of your joints. In some cases it get improves after medicines and in some patients not. Other possible management to alleviate the pain in your case can be - 1.Slight weight reduction. Don't do strenuous exercise but slight food habits change as it put less pressure on your joints. 2. Avoid strenuous work if you are doing. 3Arthrocentesis - In this procedure we inject corticosteroid it can help relieve in pain, inflammation as well as swelling. 4. You can use knee braces. 5.One more thing more according to recent study exercise usually does not aggravate osteoarthritis when performed at levels that do not cause joint pain. Exercise is helpful for relief of symptoms of osteoarthritis in several ways, including strengthening the muscular support around the joints. It also prevents the joints from freezing up and improves and maintains joint mobility. Finally, it helps with weight reduction and promotes endurance. Applying local heat before and cold packs after exercise can help relieve pain and inflammation. 6. Swimming is particularly well suited for patients with osteoarthritis because it allows patients to exercise with minimal impact stress to the joints. Other popular exercises include walking, stationary cycling and light weight training.

Please suggest. I have a severe heel pain what is the best medicine or cure for this. I also have a cramp at my toes.
Heel pain or Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue named plantar fascia that extends from the heel to the toes. In this condition, the fascia first becomes irritated and then inflamed, resulting in heel pain. Heel pain is a symptom if you are suffering from arthritis or any calcium deficiency. You should take a xray and complete blood check up for knowing the exact reason of pain Avoid going bare foot Do stretching exercises Putting an ice pack on your heel for 20 minutes several times a day helps reduce pain. Place a thin towel between the ice and your heel n do not apply ice directly to the skin If ice application didn't help go for contrast hot and cold bath. Cut down on extended physical activities to give your heel a rest Wearing supportive shoes that have good arch support and a slightly raised heel reduces stress on the plantar fascia. Reduce your weight Take 2-3 pieces of brick n heat it. Cover it with sterile cloth. Apply medicated oil on your sole and keep your foot on the brick till the heat get reduced.

I was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. I had physiotherapy for 15 days continuously and was even asked to change my sandal for soft one. After the session, there was no issue for almost a month. Again I have started getting foot pain when I get out of bed in the morning. Please advise.

Hi, for plantar fasciitis, along with the physiotherapy treatment and shoe modification, there are various exercises which you should do regularly for getting complete relief and also for preventing the chances of it happening again. Also, the exercises should be done for both legs even if one of them is not having the problem. Soft sandal is ok, but more specifically you require a complete foot assessment to see if you are having flat feet or low or high medial arch of foot, and accordingly customised footwear and insoles should be given to you. So my suggestion is ask your physiotherapist to kindly do the needful.

Lower Back Pain - Know Its Treatment and Care!

Lower Back Pain - Know Its Treatment and Care!

Back pain is a common source of pain, which can be acute, subacute or chronic in nature. Back pain is classified along the segments of the spine and can be divided into neck pain, middle back pain, lower-back pain or tailbone pain.

Lower back pain is a type of back pain, which affects the lower back portion of the body. It may occur from arthritis or due to sudden jerking during movement. Lower-back pain may cause serious discomfort and aching and may disable a person from moving about. It should be treated and cared for properly.

Here are several treatments and care procedures for lower-back pain.

  1. Take some rest: Most people who get lower-back pain get obsessed with it and end up getting MRI scans, x-rays done and take injections without recognizing the intensity of the pain. It is advised not to rush into the matter. A simple way to cure the pain is by resting. 90% of lower back pains resolve by themselves in 6 weeks and so you must give your back a break instead of taking medical action and give your back some to heal.
  2. Pills: Sometimes, a lower back pain can suddenly become severe. In this case, you should intake anti-inflammatory pills such as ibuprofen or naproxen. These pills will help you ease the pain. However, you should not take them for more than ten days at a stretch as continuous pill consumption can cause side effects.
  3. Hot & cold compress: Apply a bag of frozen peas or an ice pack to the affected area in your lower back for 48 hours after the pain appears. Every session should be about of 20 minutes and you should take several sessions each day. After two days, repeat the same procedure using a heat pad. The cooling procedure shuts down your blood capillaries, reducing the flow of blood to the affected area. The swelling is then eased. The heating, on the other hand, loosens tight muscles and helps to increase blood circulation.
  4. Replace your mattress: People who sleep on firm mattresses and cushions on their beds are at a higher risk of experiencing lower-back pain. If you sleep on a medium-firm mattress, your chances of getting lower-back pain are less. In case your mattress is sagging or is very old, you should replace it.

Lower-back pain is likely to cause great discomfort and trouble. You will be unable to carry out your daily chores because of the pain. Therefore, proper treatment and care are required for lower-back pain.
