This morning after I woke up I felt a slight pain on the left side chest and arms. But no dizziness or fatigue. Slowly the pain turned to mild numbness and vanished after 1 hour or so. I checked my BP it was 130/90 and pulse 85. Did I feel a heart related pain.

Dear Lybrateuser, - Your pain could be due to a faulty position of the arm & limb while sleeping - reduce your weight by diet & regular exercise - also restrict salt intake, avoid fried, processed & junk food, have more of fruits & green leafy vegetables, low fat milk & milk products, lean meats, a handful of mixed nuts - do regular exercise for 30 min like walking, jogging, swimming, Also include yoga, deep breathing & meditation in your schedule for 5-10 min - if pain occurs again get an ECG done & consult a doctor.

Dear lybrateuser, -Do steam inhalation twice a day -avoid exposure to cold weather, dust & smoke -have warm fluids like water, tea, coffee, soup -mix 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder in a cup of warm milk & have it twice a day -take syrup Chericof, 2 teaspoonful three times a day -take tablet levocetrizine, 5mg ,once a day in the evening -do warm salt water gargles three times a day -if not much improvement then you will require investigations & consult a doctor.

Coronary artery disease, also known as coronary heart disease or CHD, is a kind of disease in which a wax-like substance called plaque, builds up in the coronary arteries.

Function of Coronary Artery
The task of coronary arteries is to supply oxygen rich blood to the heart muscles. When there is the growth of plaque in these arteries, the condition is termed as atherosclerosis. Plaque builds up over the years, and it hardens or ruptures with time. When plaque gets hardened, it narrows the coronary arteries and thus disrupts the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscles causing coronary heart diseases. Millions of people are diagnosed with heart diseases, nowadays.

Though it is true that living with a heart disease is not easy, it is not impossible either. Many people are successfully leading a happy life in spite of having such diseases. With some major changes in your lifestyle, food habits and with the help of exercises and a healthy diet, it is possible to enjoy a happy life, irrespective of your diseases. 

Here are six ways that would help you to lead a better life, even if you have been diagnosed with coronary artery disease.

  1. Lifestyle changes: This is the first point that needs to be kept in mind if you are a CAD patient. Lifestyle changes are essential to make for a better health and life. Smoking and drinking have to be given up completely. It is advised to avoid secondary smoke, as much as possible.
  2. Exercises: This is the next important activity that needs to be a part of your daily routine to lead a healthy life. Consult with a doctor about the types of exercise that would suit your conditions. Some common exercises that would help are walking, jogging, and swimming, for at least 30 minutes at the most. Choose whichever activity you like doing. The motive of exercises is to get your heart-rate up.
  3. A Heart healthy diet: Get a chart prepared for your diet by a dietitian or by your doctor. This will keep your disease from getting worse. Stick to a heart-healthy eating plan, which consists of foods that can lower your risk of heart attack, stroke, etc. Include more fruits, vegetables, and other high fibre foods in your daily diet. Go for foods that are low in saturated fats, trans-fats, and cholesterol. Try to include fish into your diet.
  4. Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight or obese aggravates any disease. So it is important to keep your body weight perfect.
  5. Taking medicines as prescribed: It is important to take medicines regularly and as prescribed by the physician.
  6. Keeping tensions, anxiety to a minimum: These will make the situation worse if you are CAD patient. So try to keep tension and anxiety away and lead a healthy life.

What is hypertension?

Blood pressure is defined as the measure of force which is exerted by the arterial blood on the arterial blood vessels. Damage can occur if the pressure is constantly high over time. This results in the stretching of the arterial walls beyond their threshold and the tissues of the arteries get damaged. Blood pressure is recorded as a ratio of two numbers. The higher number represents the systolic pressure (used to measure the pressure in the ventricles when it relaxes) and the lower one is the measure for diastolic pressure (used to measure the pressure during ventricular relaxation). Going by medical guidelines, you are diagnosed with hypertension if your blood pressure goes over 140 over 90 mmHg. Not treating hypertension over a long span of time can lead to end-organ damage and ultimately, death.

You can make an effort to incorporate more cinnamon in your diet by sprinkling some in your oatmeal, breakfast cereal or coffee.
  3. CARDAMOM: This seasoning is very common in India, most prominently in the south Indian states. Studies investigating the effects of cardamom have shown that incorporating cardamom in your food for several months has positive effects on the blood pressure by reducing it. You can add cardamom in the form of seeds or powder in your soups and stews. Cardamom goes well if sprinkled on baked goods as well. I am 40 years old. I am experiencing palpitations since last one year. Earlier this problem was not accurately diagnosed because the symptoms were weird. There were vibrations in the left side of the head and numbness in left leg and hand. So I started taking Librium 10. It helped but not completely. Then I started taking Inderal 40 twice daily for 10 days. It helped but at times I feel palpitations. I want to know two things. How to get rid of Librium10 because whenever I skip its dose I feel weakness and numbness in leg. And secondly will I be able to get rid of palpitations?

My mother's heartbeat suddenly increases and she is also feeling some heaviness around her chest area. Actually, her hemoglobin was 6 around one month ago and doctor advised her 7 cycles of 300 mg iron injections (3 ENCIFER or OROFER S) in 200 ml normal saline. Since then, she has had five injection cycles in hospital. The last four iron injection cycles took around 2 to 2.5 hrs per cycle but fifth injection cycle was completed in approximately one hour by nurse. Also at the time of fifth injection, the canola was fixed on her wrist (since both the hands were paining as they were used for the last four cycles) and she was also told by nurse to hold the canola so that the same could not come out (but it was not the case in the last four cycles in which the canolas were fixed on hands i.e. On back side of palm). Since the application of fifth injection cycle, she was feeling heaviness in chest and now after 5 days of application of fifth injection cycle, she is saying that the heaviness has moved slightly above chest. The phenomenon of sudden increase in her pulse rate is also taking place. Today, I measure her BLOOD PRESSURE which was 135 and 62 and pulse was 98. She takes TELMIKIND40 for blood pressure daily and thyroid tablet of 75 mg daily for thyroid. Please explain, if the heaviness or sudden increase in pulse rate may be due to the fact that the fifth injection cycle was completed within one hour as compared to the last four injections (which took at least two hour each time) or is there something related to BLOOD PRESSURE which is causing heaviness and sudden increase of pulse or there may be different reasons for sudden increase in pulse and heaviness around chest area and about her present condition (can fifth iron injection given be harmful) and also what treatment should be given. I shall be extremely thankful to you.

First thing forget about 5 th injection procedure. I usually give it in one hour. Increase in heart rate is due to anxiety, worry or stress. Her bp and pulse is within normal limit. So nothing is to be done.

I've been having this pain in my left upper back for a while. It feels sore and painful whenever I turn or lie down. I feel pain in my upper left chest when I press on one rib there or when I bend. The pain forces me to cough. I did an ECG and a blood test for a clot and a chest xray and all results were normal. I'd like to know what might be the causes for that pain.

Dear lybrateuser, - Your problem could be due to muscular & bony problem - do not exert, bend, lift up weight - do hot fomentation of the affected area three times a day - apply pain relief gel thrice a day, do not rub apply lightly - take a pain relief tablet after meals if pain is more.

Dear Lybrateuser, - You have to reduce your weight so that the BP also will come down a few points - restrict your salt & sugar intake, avoid fried, processed & junk food, foods containing saturated & trans fats, restrict intake of tea, coffee to 1-2 cups - have more of fibrous foods, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, sprouts, a handful of nuts - use healthy fats like in olive, canola oil, walnuts, avocados & fish - do regular exercise like walking for 30 min, also do yoga, deep breathing & meditation for 10-15 min in the morning - take BP regularly as advised by your doctor - consult your cardiologist as the dose of the drug or the drug may be required to be changed.

I am getting very light pain or sensation near heart (only left hand side of chest) from last one week. I am feeling this from last one month, but it got little increased now and I am feeling palpitation also sometime (not regular). This happened to me before also around two year back. Then I consulted cardiologist, he done ECG and concluded that it is a muscular spasm due to vitamin deficiency. My Blood pressure is 125-135/84 from last week. Is it again a muscular spasm or related to heart? Please advice solution for my problem.

Dear Lybrateuser, - You should get a check up done by a cardiologist to rule out any heart problem which can be due to your thyroid hormone abnormality also - only after a checkup & investigations the cause can be confirmed - to keep your BP at normal level restrict salt intake, avoid fried, processed & junk food, have more of fibrous foods like fruits & vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts - do regular exercise like walking, jogging for 15-20 min, also do yoga, deep breathing & meditation for 10-15 min in the morning.

Dear sir, My grandma have been blood pressure and diabetes since 10 years and her usual treatment or medication are going on. When her legs are swelled extremely ,she reached to a cardiologist. Yes it is safe to use these medicines in diabetic. But what is reason for swelling. If not investigated then get her tests done. With these medicines and in elderly keep checking her electrolytes periodically.

Chicken eggs are high in cholesterol, but the effect of egg consumption on blood cholesterol is minimal when compared with the effect of trans fats and saturated fats. The risk of heart disease may be more closely tied to the foods that accompany the eggs in a traditional American breakfast — such as the sodium in the bacon, sausages and ham, and the saturated fat or oils with trans fats used to fry the eggs and the hash browns. Most healthy people can eat up to seven eggs a week with no increase in their risk of heart disease. Some studies have shown that this level of egg consumption may actually prevent some types of strokes. But the story is different for people who have diabetes. In this ever-growing population, eating seven eggs a week significantly increases the risk of heart disease. When deciding whether to include eggs in your diet, consider the recommended daily limits on cholesterol in your food: If you are healthy, consume no more than 300 mg of cholesterol a day. If you have diabetes, high cholesterol or heart disease, limit the daily cholesterol intake to no more than 200 mg a day. If you like eggs but don't want the extra cholesterol, use only the egg whites. Egg whites contain no cholesterol. You may also use cholesterol-free egg substitutes, which are made with egg whites.

Dry cough is usually an allergic reaction to environment or changing weather. In a Tsp of honey mix 3-4 pinches of turmeric and take it 3-4 times a day.

Dear Lybrate User, 32.9 value is not the major concern as per your age & weight also, for maintaining good homocysteine level, cholesterol level & also for your gastro -intestinal problem without medicine you need to do regular cardio exercise - 30 mins, yoga+ pranayama + stretching exercise = 30 mins, in diet you should avoid fatty food, milk & milk products, oily-spicy stuffs which may increase your gastric problem.
