Sesame Seeds - 6 Amazing Health Benefits of It!

Sesame seeds are considered as the oldest oilseed crops in the world. They are derived from the plant of Sesamum genus. Though minuscule in comparison to other seeds, they are extremely beneficial for your health. They are very useful in the prevention of diabetes, lower blood pressure, and are also known to prevent a wide variety of cancers. In addition, sesame seeds are extremely useful for boosting the respiratory health, building strong bones, improving blood circulation, cleansing the body and in the elimination of depression and chronic stress.

They can be added as a natural ingredient in our day to day cooking and can be used in a wide variety of applications. Sesame seeds are rich in vitamins, minerals, and natural oils. They are also loaded with natural organic compounds such as iron, magnesium, phosphorous, manganese, copper, zinc, protein, and tryptophan. Let us have a look at some of the health benefits of the sesame seeds.

  1. Blood pressure: One of the primary uses of adding sesame seeds to our diet is their ability to control blood pressure. They are loaded with magnesium that aids in the prevention of hypertension, and thus can be very beneficial in keeping the blood pressure conditions under check.
  2. Cancer prevention: Sesame seeds are also enriched with natural antioxidants that help in cleansing the body. This criterion benefits us in the fight against cancer. Sesame seeds also do have essential vitamins and minerals that reduce the risk of cancer drastically. They also restrict the circulation of free radicals. Some of the leukemia types that can be prevented when using sesame seeds include breast, lung, pancreatic, colon, and prostate cancers.
  3. Bone health: Sesame seeds are loaded with impressive levels of minerals such as zinc, calcium, and phosphorous. These are essential in strengthening and repairing the bones.
  4. Digestion: Sesame seeds contain natural fiber and hence form a strong element in metabolism. They are also very beneficial for removing the symptoms of constipation and keeps the condition of diarrhea in check. Fiber scraps out the harmful cholesterol from our body. Indirectly, they are beneficial to your heart and prevents heart ailment such as strokes and cardiovascular diseases.
  5. Oral health: Sesame seeds have a strong presence of antibacterial properties within them. Due to this reason, they are best used in the treatment of mouth ulcers and gum problems. Adding sesame seeds to warm water and squishing inside the mouth can act as a natural mouth cleanser.
  6. Skin and hair health: Sesame seeds have rich sources of zinc, a vital component that helps in the formation of collagen, an ingredient used to strengthen the muscle tissue, hair, and skin. They are also known to be part of many face packs and have anti-aging properties. They aid in the skin tightening process and act against the wrinkles.

As a part of culinary proceedings, sesame seeds can be had in a variety of ways. They can either be dry roasted and sprinkled as a topping, or they can be added with spices and mixed into the gravy. They also can be mixed as a part of fruit and vegetable juices. Though the seeds are tiny in nature, their beneficial properties are more potent than any other food items known to man.

10 Common Mistakes That Dieters Make

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
10 Common Mistakes That Dieters Make

1. Starving during the day and eating only one meal at night: though this may sound repetitive, it is vital to weight loss and so frequently ignored, that one is forced to remind potential dieters of this.

2. Eating sprouts on a day when you are also eating cooked food: the combination of sprouts and regular cooked food is very fattening. If you are eating sprouts, then do not add anything with it. The best time to eat sprouts is before your workout or early in the morning. But when you eat a bowl of sprouts along with your lunch / dinner, then the sprouts will only form gases and will not be that helpful for weight loss. When having sprouts, do not mix it with any other cooked food.

3. Drinking juices (very fattening) and coconut water (good for kidney, not so good when trying to knock off flab).

4. Eating plenty of ketchup, pickles. Eating too many of the diet foods like diet chocolate, diet fizzy drinks, diet cookies (heavy on fat and loaded with aspartame which in high doses also prevents weight loss).

5. Eating too many carbs: often repeated but true because some people with a carb-sensitive profile do not lose weight despite being on a low calorie diet.

6. Drinking mega-doses of milk and consuming lot of dairy in the form of curd, paneer, cheese: too much of dairy makes the elimination system sluggish, a sensible amount of dairy suits some people but not all blood groups.

7. Drinking tea/coffee more than 8 cups a day: creates toxins within the system which stagnates weight loss.

8. Drinking soup at night does not suit women as it promotes water retention and increases weight.

9. Eating dals at night: too heavy to digest and stays as calories. And here are a few more:

A lot of people consider dals as proteins whereas most dals have only 30% protein so their protein content is 1/3 that of egg and dals have 65-70% carbs (so a lot of dals can add to your carbs too).

10. Doing fad diets like only vegetables and fruits for 7 days will always lead to rebound weight gain.

Dangal - Things That It Teaches Us!

Dangal - Things That It Teaches Us!

Dangal is one of the most revolutionary movies of our times. It has received rousing reviews from critics and avid film goers alike and has been hailed as a path altering film, which has definitely raised the benchmark as far as realism in commercial cinema goes. The movie is based on the real-life tale of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his two daughters, whom he trains to perfection so that they can become international level medal winning wrestlers. Let us look at the psychological aspect of this movie.

  1. Helicopter parenting: In this movie, we find a helicopter parent in Phogat who wants his daughters to attain a certain brand of perfection. In many ways, his parenting style has been derived from his unattained dreams, which he also projects onto his daughters. In today’s day and age, such kind of parenting usually leads to a lack of decision-making skills as far as the child is concerned due to the excessive intervention of the parent in every decision and situation.
  2. Perfection: In an obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD manner, the main character of the movie also projects his need for perfection on to his children, even going as far as limiting and completely cutting off their normal childhood habits like craving for sweet and savory food, as well as TV viewing. This may be seen as an extreme measure and case of OCD as far as his dedication to his training ideals go.
  3. Sports pre-performance tactics: In the movie, we have been shown myriad sports pre-performance tactics that are used by the best sportspersons the world over, in order to achieve their goal. This kind of pre-performance is especially important in physical pursuits because it helps in aligning the brain with the body by removing all distractions. Most sportspersons have various routines that may involve breathing exercises or listening to a pep talk, or even a certain kind of music so that this kind of a mindset sets in and they single-mindedly focus on the music, talk or breathing in order to remind themselves of what they are to do on the field.
  4. Dealing with failure: This is of major importance. In the movie, we find that one of the characters misses the Olympic medal by a whisker due to an unfortunate incident. Yet, this must not be seen as a deterrent. The sports person has to remember that at the end of the day, his or her hard work, sweat and turmoil is the ultimate trophy or medal, rather than the physical manifestation of the same. The fact that he or she has managed to rise to that kind of physical stamina and endurance in the field is in itself a prize that shows how far he or she has come from all other professionals in the same field. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a psychologist.

Cervical Spondylosis - How to Treat It?

MBBS, F.E.M-RCGP(UK)
General Physician, Gurgaon
Cervical Spondylosis - How to Treat It?

Cervical spondylosis is fast becoming the bane of modern life. An age-related wear and tear problem affecting the spinal discs in your neck, cervical spondylosis is increasingly affecting the young because of the use of cell phones, laptops and the like.

Cervical spondylosis is a general term used to define shrinkage of disc in between vertebrae in the neck region. Along with disc degeneration, bony projections also form in the area and are called bone spurs.
Other causes of cervical spondylosis are dehydrated discs. Discs are thick, pad-like cushions in between vertebrae that act as shock absorbers. They are made of a gel- like material that can dry over time. This causes the spinal vertebrae to rub together causing pain. The discs also crack which allows the internal gel-like material to spill out and impinge on spinal nerves causing symptoms.

There is a narrowing of the space required by the spinal cord and nerves that emanate in the upper spine to go to various parts of the body. Pinching of these nerves can cause alarming symptoms like

  1. Numbness and weakness in your arms, hands, legs and feet
  2. Lack of coordination and difficulty in walking
  3. Loss of bladder or bowel movement
  4. Stiffness and pain in neck

Treatment and management
Usually, cervical spondylosis doesn’t cause any symptoms. But when you start experiencing pain, stiffness and weakness of muscles, it’s best to go to a doctor who will diagnose the problem and then treat it.
Treatment for cervical spondylosis depends on the severity of your symptoms. Its goal is to get rid of pain, allow you to carry on your daily activities and prevent any permanent damage to your spinal cord and nerves.

Medicines

  1. Anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed to reduce pain and inflammation. Example Ibuprofen.
  2. Corticosteroids are oral medications to get rid of the severe pain. If these don’t work, your doctor can suggest steroid injections.
  3. Muscle relaxants medicines relax the muscles in the upper part of the spine and help in curing neck pain and stiffness
  4. Anti-seizure medications are also prescribed to dull the pain of damaged nerves in the spine. These include epilepsy medications, such as gabapentin and pregabalin.

Physiotherapy

  1. Non surgical treatments are usually very effective in treating cervical spondylosis and surgery is usually not required. Physiotherapy is a bulwark for patients as it helps manage the condition very well.
  2. Neck exercises that help stretch and strengthen muscles in your neck and shoulders can help manage debilitating symptoms of cervical spondylosis.
  3. Few patients also benefit from traction, which can help provide more space for nerve roots within the spine.

Surgery

  1. Surgery is the last resort for treating cervical spondylosis.
  2. It is suggested when non-surgical treatments fail and the pain and neurological signs such as weakness in your arms or legs get worse.
  3. It is done to create more room for your spinal cord and nerve roots.

Cervical spondylosis surgery typically involves removing:

  1. Herniated disc
  2. Bone spurs
  3. Part of a vertebra

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a general physician.

Haemoglobin - Foods That Improve It!

MD
General Physician, Mumbai
Haemoglobin - Foods That Improve It!

Haemoglobin is a protein rich in iron and is found in red blood cells. The main function of haemoglobin is to carry oxygen throughout the body. In other words, it carries oxygen from the lungs to the other parts of the body so that the cells can carry on with their basic functions. It also carries carbon dioxide back to the lungs from those cells so that this gas can be exhaled.

Haemoglobin is important for maintaining a healthy life. The normal levels of haemoglobin in human body include:
• 14-18g/dl for adult men
• 12-16g/dl for adult women

Foods that improve haemoglobin

  1. Consume iron-rich food products: According to National Anaemia Action Council, lack of iron is the most common cause behind low haemoglobin levels. To improve iron content in your blood, you can take asparagus, tofu, almonds, oysters, fortified breakfast cereals, liver, red meat, shrimp, spinach, dates and lentils. However, consult your doctor for the right intake, as too much consumption of iron may be harmful for your health.
  2. Improve your vitamin C intake: Absorption of iron is improved if vitamin C is taken in adequate quantities. Lemon, tomatoes, papaya, oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, grapefruit, etc. are some of the fruits that are rich in vitamin C. In fact, if there is a deficiency of vitamin C in our blood, haemoglobin levels go down. You may also take vitamin supplements to improve haemoglobin in your body, but consult a doctor first.
  3. Focus on food items rich in folic acid: This acid is basically vitamin B complex, which is required to make red blood cells. Food products that are rich in folic acid include rice, liver, breakfast cereals, sprouts, dried beans, wheat germ, peanuts etc. A diet comprising 200-400 milligrams of foliates is enough to supplement your Vitamin B needs.
  4. Include beetroot as a part of your diet: Rich in iron, folic acid, fibres and potassium, beetroot helps in augmenting haemoglobin levels. Drinking beetroot juice daily increases the iron content in your red blood cells.
  5. Have apples: They are rich in iron and if you have an apple daily, then your haemoglobin level will improve significantly. If possible, take a green apple with its skin. Apple juice mixed with beetroot juice has a marked effect on haemoglobin levels. You can also add some ginger or lemon juice to this mixture and have the concoction twice a day.
  6. Eat blackstrap molasses: This food is rich in iron, vitamin, folic acid etc. and improves the haemoglobin level in your blood. Take 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses and apple cider vinegar each, mix them in a cup of water and drink this concoction once a day.

Hi sir! Can you please suggest me some home made remedies for clear and baby pink skin. Thanks in advance.

MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Delhi
Hi sir! Can you please suggest me some home made remedies for clear and baby pink skin.
Thanks in advance.
Hello Lybrate-user Always remember what goes in your body, shows on your skin. So maintaining a healthy diet and physical activity level is very important. Some of the effective home remedies for clear skin are- 1-Detox Water-2 liters water+ sliced 1 cucumber+sliced 1 lemon+ a handful of mint leaves- mix everything and keep on sipping it entire day 2-Coconut Oil- you need virgin coconut oil and Cotton ball or cotton pad Lightly warm up the oil. Dot the oil all over the skin with your fingertips and massage the area for a minute or two. Let the oil soak in for a couple of minutes. Wipe away the excess oil with a cotton ball/pad Coconut oil is an excellent natural moisturizer for the skin. Its antimicrobial properties will keep the skin clean and infection-free. The phytochemicals present in it are powerful antioxidants that scavenge free radicals and impart a natural and healthy glow to your skin 3-Apple Cider Vinegar You need- 1 part apple cider vinegar 1 part water Cotton ball Mix the vinegar with water and soak the cotton ball in it. Apply this on the skin and leave it on overnight. Wash the area as usual in the morning. You can also add a teaspoon of ACV to a glass of water and drink it every morning. Do this every night before going to bed. The acids present in ACV exfoliate the dead skin cells and reveals a fresh and healthy layer of skin cells. ACV is also an astringent and will prevent your pores from getting infected and inflamed 4-Green Tea Daily consumption of green tea is recommended for a healthy body and also for healthy and clear skin. Green tea is full of antioxidants that will nourish, heal, and detoxify your body. The condition of your body from the inside is reflected on your skin. Green tea is also good to reduce blood cholesterols levels and maintain optimum heart and bone health 5-Lemon Take a lemon and cut it in two halves. Take one half and rub it directly onto your skin in a circular motion. Do this for five minutes. Rinse your face with cold water Lemon juice is a rich source of vitamin C, which helps in skin lightening. This remedy helps you to get rid of spots and blemishes and paves the way for clear, flawless skin 6-Honey On a clean and dry face, apply a thin layer on the skin. Let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then, rinse with lukewarm water. Repeat this every day for glowing and clear skin. Honey contains vitamins and minerals that nourish the skin. It also contains antioxidants, called flavonoids, which give you youthful and glowing skin. Its cleansing properties will keep the skin pores clean 7-Aloe Vera Take a leaf from the aloe vera plant Remove the thorny sides and the green outer covering from the aloe vera leaf. Cut the gel into small cubes. In order to use the gel, you can either grind the cubes to a pulp or rub the cubes directly onto the skin. Include the aloe vera remedy in your daily skin care routine for spot-free, flawless skin. Aloe vera is known to have skin-friendly and antiseptic properties. It is a well-known moisturizer and helps in clearing the skin of blemishes and spots 8-Olive Oil You need- Extra virgin olive oil Soft washcloth Hot water Take a few drops of this oil, and apply it thoroughly on the skin. Follow this up with a gentle massage in circular motions. Leave it on for a few minutes. Then, wipe it off using a washcloth dipped in hot water. Repeat this every night before going to bed. Olive oil contains vitamin E that hydrates the skin and restores its freshness and elasticity (13). The oil will absorb all the impurities, leaving a clean and clear skin 9-Oatmeal You need- 2 tablespoons oatmeal 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon honey Mix all the ingredients to form a thick paste. Add a little water if required. Apply this mask on the face and neck, and leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. Apply this mask twice a week. Oatmeal soothes the skin and exfoliates the dead skin cells. It also moisturizes the skin, thus keeping it at its optimum health. The anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants found in oatmeal are added benefits for the skin 10-Rose Water- Place the rose water in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Apply it all over a clean face and neck using the cotton ball. Let it air dry. Moisturize as usual 11-Potato Cut the potato into round slices. Take a slice and rub it onto your skin in circular motions. Rub the slices for five minutes and wash it off with cold water. Follow this routine once daily for best results. Potatoes contain natural enzymes that have bleaching properties. Hence, using a potato slice for treating spots, blemishes, and discolorations can help you get clear, flawless skin 12-Turmeric Mix two tablespoons of turmeric with water to make a thick paste. Apply this paste over your face. Let it stay on for about five minutes. Then, rinse your face with cold water Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and is widely used to treat minor cuts and wounds. It also has skin lightening properties due to which it can get rid of those spots and blemishes 13-Tomato Make a pulp of the tomato and mix it with two teaspoons of rose water. Apply this mixture on your face and keep it on for 10 minutes. Wash your face with cool water and pat dry with a soft towel. Apply this pack to your face and skin daily to reap maximum benefits. Tomato has antioxidant properties that keep the skin youthful and also help in lightening spots and blemishes on the skin Additional Tips To Get Clear Skin Apart from the home remedies listed above, here are a few tips to get radiant and spot-free skin. Drink Water – Drink lots of water. It will flush out all the toxins and help maintain your skin’s hydration levels from within. This will help you get clear, glowing skin. This is a clear skin secret that works for everyone. Eat A Balanced Diet – Speaking of tips to get clear skin, it’s time to talk about your diet.
