High Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure Causes

High blood pressure is many times a symptom of underlying disease. You can visualize heart as a pump which is pumping blood (viscous liquid) across the body. It supplies the brain where it pumps against gravity. Similarly it also receives the blood from the legs which is again against gravity. In this closed circulation the blood vessels allow the gases like oxygen and carbondioxide and some liquid to pass through the membrane along with nutrients and waste products to and from various tissues.

Blood pressure increases

1. The heart has to pump with higher intensity due to a blockage which restricts the blood supply to a critical organ including the brain and heart.

2. Blood vessels become narrow due to constriction or fat and calcified plaques deposited.

3. Certain hormones (Chemicals) secreted by the kidneys and other organs cause the blood vessels to contract.

4. Stress which releases enzymes that increase blood pressure.

5. Electrolytes like Sodium levels increase the osmotic pressure thereby increasing the volume of blood and thus blood pressure. It is mainly due to an underline endocrine disease.

Considering these five points we need to investigate understand and try to address the cause by symptomatically managing the blood pressure.

High blood pressure has multiple effects on to the body especially on small blood vessels which can burst (bleed) in brain, eyes and other organs. It also increases the risk of pushing a clot into the brain as well as damaging the blood vessel itself. The cholesterol and other lipids which circulate in the blood get pushed towards the walls of the vessel due to high blood pressure thereby increasing the risk of atherosclerosis.

In short high blood pressure is a serious entity needs to be addressed objectively.

Dear Patient, in summers due to excessive sweating and irritation you are getting fungal infection in the groin areas. There are lot of antifungal medications available some OTC and some to be prescribed. I suggest you see a general practitioner in your locality who will prescribe you the skin ointment. Try to keep the area dry by applying talcum powder or even Candid powder. Best of luck.

Today there are numerous options, diets and aids available which claim to get rid of fat, one must be careful about one's choose. The world's oldest medical systems, Ayurveda believes that belly fat can cause an increase in the kapha dosha.

By following a healthy diet and following an active lifestyle suggested by Ayurveda, the belly fat can be reduced. The healthy diet includes abstinence from certain foods that increase medha (body fat) and kapha. Carbohydrate and oil rich foods are to be strictly abstained.

One must be very careful when consuming foods with high carbohydrate content as these transform into sugar in the body and tend to accumulate on the body. The kapha and medha can be reduced by including green gram and horse gram coupled with changing from rice based diet to wheat based diet.

Drinking a lot of water contributes in a major way towards one's weight loss efforts. Water assists in flushing out excess water weight and improves metabolism. Drinking one glass of water every hour from the time one get up aids in burning of belly fat. One must add a spoon of triphala chooran to water, boil it and consume it with honey after every meal.

One must reduce the salt intake and milk based products such as ice-creams and butter. One should consume fruits, two in the morning and one every evening to reduce belly fat. Afternoon nap slows down the metabolic rate and reduces burning of calories, thus it should be avoided. Inclusion of ground spices as cinnamon, ginger and pepper in food will help one to get rid of pot belly.

One should try out the belly massage with lavana thailam, which is effective in disintegrating persistent belly fat. A 15 ml of varadi tonic mixed it with 60 ml boiled and cooled water with some honey is great for every morning and evening. Massage the belly vigorously after applying a paste made of horse gram powder and sour buttermilk over the belly and follow it up with a bath in warm water after thirty minutes of the massage.

Amazing Herbs That Keep your Skin Healthy and Glowing

Summer's scorching heat can burn skin and one can keep skin healthy with Ayurveda. The powerful rays of the sun leads to severe sunburn, rashes, irritation, redness and acne outbreaks. As per Ayurveda, one need to use the right herbs and Ayurvedic remedies to ensure the skin remains healthy in the scorching heat along with proper diet and routine planning.

According to Ayurveda, there are seven layers in skin and doshas vitiating one or more of these layers, gives rise to different skin diseases. The depth of the vitiation determines the seriousness as well as the prognostic value of the disease.

  1. Acne and pimples are encountered the first layer of skin Avabhasini
  2. Moles dark circles and black pigmentation denotes issues pertaining to the second layer Lohita
  3. Eczema and allergic rashes determine the vitiation in the third layer Shweta
  4. Serious skin diseases like chronic eczemas, psoriasis etc normally affect the fourth layer Tamra
  5. Herpes and painful blisters are seen the fifth layer Vedini
  6. Cancers, Elephantiasis and other Tumors affects the sixth layer of skin Rohini
  7. Fistula and Abscess affects the seventh and the last layer Mamsadhara

Skin derives its nutrition from blood, which is often vitiated by Pitta dosha mainly due to improper diet and exposure to the Sun and to harsh chemicals. So external treatment needs to be complemented well by using internal medicines which identify the source of the pathogenesis and then devise the treatment If the skin in unhealthy, then no amount of bleaching and facial massage or application of makeup can hide the shallow look.

Skin is also the largest organ of the body and it is exposed to the external environment. Sun, Cold, Heat, UV light, Chemicals, Fumes constantly attack the same from outside and improper diet, vitiated doshas and blood attack it from inside. Thus, it needs a treatment and constant care from both the sides. Skin also retains water and is a largest excretory organ excreting sweat so there is need to moisturise and cleanse it regularly.

Aloe Vera gels, and other body lotions help the skin to regain its hydration. Soaps, chemical agents like bleaches, makeup just enhance the looks temporarily but these things in a long run damage the skin. One must switch over to mild cleansers or herbal decoctions and powders to prevent drying of skin.

Regular application of face packs composing of turmeric, sandalwood, tulsi and multani mitti are helpful. The skin should be cleansed properly using rose water. Air pollutants like smoke and dirt clog the pores of the skin and cause pre-aging of skin, eczema and allergies. This can be prevented by applying a good herbal moisturiser which act as a barrier between the skin and pollutants.

For wrinkles, papaya pulp can be massaged gently which helps reduce the collagen built up. Unhealthy dietary habits and stressful lifestyles results in Pitta and vata aggravation leading to diminished glow of skin, dark circles, wrinkles and acne.

Ayurveda recommends that by establishing a regular bedtime, morning routine and regular exercise improves the circulation of blood and ensures that your vital body organs get ample Oxygen. Oily and spicy foods, tobacco, drugs and alcohol aggravate Pitta dosha.

There are deep rooted causes to most skin problems and the use of local creams or antibiotics can only cover the symptoms and give temporary relief. Ayurvedic therapy comprising the right diet, lifestyle and specialized herbal formulations is the easiest way to eliminate such diseases from their roots. So, for glowing skin all summer, adopt Ayurveda therapy today.

But then at 19 , I picked up smoking habit and continued for 6 years before I quit. Now after 1 year of quitting , I feel breathlessness all the time especially when I do something, wheezing sometimes at night but no cough. When I drink alcohol , my heart beats faster making it hard to breath and causing physical strain . Do I have asthma or what ? Please suggest.

Dear patient, eosinophilia is seen in any allergic manifestation and in some parasitic infections. I believe due to six years of smoking and an already with a history of respiratory diseases you might have been prone to late onset of asthma like condition. We need to diagnose the same a lung function test along with an xray would be helpful to start off. You can start with breathing exercises in the morning to increase the lung capacity. Alchohol if giving problem should be avoided.

Dear patient, the chances of pregnancy cannot be ruled out. I suggest you wait for some time and in the next week get a urine pregnancy test done. Delayed menses month on month is most likely due to stress which might be due to anxiety for conceiving. Relax and let the nature take its path. You can try using ovulation kits which can help you conceive.

Good morning sir, I married 1 year before, due to m in police training I cannot meet frequently in intercourse, now I want child to conceive my wife so I request you kindly mention the ovulation dates after menstrual periods. Kindly give the information clearly dates. And my wife periods usually delay 2-10 days every month Kindly do the needful Thanking you.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), MD - Ayurveda
Ayurveda, Mumbai
Dear Patient, The only time a woman can conceive is during the ‘fertile window’ of the menstrual cycle. This window will vary depending on the individual’s cycle, however timing intercourse in the 6 days leading up to and including ovulation is the window with highest chance of conception. Ovulation happens about two weeks before the next expected period. So if your partners menstrual cycle is 28 days, then the day of ovulation would be around day 14. In that day the most fertile day for intercourse would be 12, 13 and 14 th day. The better way to plan is to use a ovulation kit which is available OTC. She can start using it after 8th day of the menses and then check every morning for ovulation.
