It is definitely not advisable to use xylomatazoline for more than 3 to 5 days. It will definitely give excellent immediate relief for short period but it increases swelling inside nose and worsens sinusitis.

Hi lybrate-user
probably it is due to change of environment. You need to get some investigations done.
Also what nasal drops are you using? If you are using xylometazoline or oxymetazoline, they should not be used for more than 5 days. They will also cause rhinitis medicamentosa leading to your symptoms. You can consult me anytime regarding further evaluation.

Dear Mr. lybrate-user,
you certainly have nasal allergy. Otrivin is not the drug of choice. As a matter of fact it has many short term and long term side effects and now out oif favour drug. You should see an ent or allergy specialist who will prescribe the right drug for you.

Avoid using oral steroids for a long time without doctor's supervision. Nasal congestion can be treated with anti-histaminics, saline nasal sprays and steam inhalation. If required, steroid nasal sprays can be used for relief supplemented by short course of decongestant drops containing xylometazoline. It is important to understand cause of nasal congestion for any effective treatment. Kindly consult with a specialist in person and avoid self medicating with steroids.

Hi,
thank you for writing in.
1. These symptoms are due to nasal turbinate hypertrophy. 2. Since you have taken medical therapy and had a septoplasty, get a plain ct pns (para nasal sinuses) done and share the images.
3. At the same sitting get a plain ct pns with 1 mm coronal, axial and sagittal views pre and post decongestion with nasal decongestant drops (0.1 % xylometazoline). After the first scan use 5-8 drops of otrivin nasal drops in both the nostrils. Wait 15 minutes by the c...more
