Sir ,i am taking zenoxa (oxcarbazepine) for 6 years clobazam for 2 years and I am not recovered from the brain seizure. Dr. Upendra devkota said that there is no need of surgery but still I am suffering and it seems that I am in another world when I rest in bed .for more than 5 times seizure s have occurred during trying to sleep .the main symptom is that I have lost my consciousness and I have confusions during taking decisions. I also want to do frcs in neurosurgery in future .i am a 16 year old boy from nepal. Please response me as fast as possible.

Most of the seizures cannot be treated with surgery and in your case, there is no role for surgery and medicine is good enough

My mother was diagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome in right wrist, 5 years ago with 2 months medicines of oxcarbazepine, dosulepin, paroxetine. No problem and symptoms during last 5 year, two days before, she starts numbness and pain during rest and sleep time. Can start previous medicines for one month, or change.

I had depression in 1993 and was on lithium and other mood stabilizers but in 1999 I had mania. Since 2009 I am taking oxcarbazepine 300 mg 1 mg ativan and 1 mg clonazepam at night. I had no episode since 1999 .but I am facing memory problems and lack of energy. I am unable to reduce my 1 mg ativan and 1 mg clonazepam. One doctor prescribed to take etizolam instead of ativan. Doctor kindly guide me properly. Thanks.

Dear Parveen,
It is nice to know that you don't have any further episode with regular oxcarbazepine. As age advances, clonazepam and lorazepam (ativan) interferes with your memory and does not give any added benefits for your mood. So please reduce one by one slowly. Start with ativan 0.5 mg for 2 weeks and stop. Then clonazepam also 0.5 mg for 2 weeks and stop. You can use etizolam if anxiety or sleep becomes a problem temporarily for next 1 month. Please continue your mood stabilisers.

A friend of mine age 22/ F is having Spine TB since 3 months ago, from past 2 days she is having issue of improper urination. Meanwhile if a person is drinking a glass of water every hour then he/ she have to go for urination almost every hour but here in her case she need to go for urination for 2-3 times with a great pressure also she is having some pain in her uterus. As she is financially weak so I would ask you to please do a favour and kindly suggest if she can take any medicine. FYI- Her present medical prescription says that she need to take Forecox (on empty stomach); Ravie 3 (in morning after meal); Oleptal DT 150 (twice a day after meal); omnacortil (twice a day after meal) and Caprofex syrup (thrice a day). My 5 years old son is having frequent nose bleed for last one month. Though the amount of blood is quite less but the onset can be as frequent as twice a day. We consulted ENT doctor about 15 days back and he suggested its anterior and suggested paraffin drops along with Saline. This reduced the frequency but not entirely cured the problem. For last few days the frequency has again increased. We stay in Pune and the weather has been dry but changing now. He is taking Oleptal DT 150 twice a day for childhood epilepsy. Please suggest if we should revisit a specialist.

Children has tendency of nose picking. So nose bleeding (epistaxis) is very common in this age group. Inn summer there is dry air which causes dryness in nose which also lead to nose bleed. I suggest you that you apply small amount of ointment neomycin in anterior part of nose along with saline nasal drops 3 drops three times a day for minimum 5 days. And also encourage child to avoid nose pricking.

I have bipolar disorder diagnosed in 2010. I have been prescribed Lovax 300 (oxcarbazepine) two times a day as mood stabilizer. It works very well for me, except that it gives me terrible back pain especially in lower back. If I stop it in 4-5 days the back pain goes. But again when I start it the back pain returns in 4-5 days. I was given Torvate Chrono (Valproic Acid) as mood stabilizer in the past but it caused severe lethargy and sleepiness in afternoon due to high serum Ammonia levels. I can not take lithium as I have severe Diabetes and take insulin 120 units total in a day. My doctor says there is no other mood stabilizer available and Lovax (oxcarbazepine) is best mood stabilizer for me as it has min side effects. But leaves gives me horrible back pain but my Dr. does not agree that Lovax causes back pain. Can you please advise if Lovax can cause such severe back pain? Otherwise what should I do?

The psychiatrist is correct you have been given 3 best mood stabilizers and you are not able tolerate them. But wait, recent recommendations are there that if people don't tolerate mood stabilizers, low dose antipsychotics can be used as mood stabilizers. So you can try that from your psychiatrist.

Myself 29 male suffering from bipolar disorder & taking medication from last six years. I have taken Depakote up to 1000 mg with Oxcarbazepine 600 And also tried Depakote 1000 with qutipin200 But never got satisfactory results for hypomanic symptoms as well as depression. Now I am on lithium 300 twice with lamotrigine 50 at night and feeling very much relaxed due to lithium effectiveness in hypomanic symptoms but since I started taking lithium from last one month I am having problem of constipation and also observed hair fall. Please suggest whether these side effects will go or I should stop talking lithium.

Dear Zeeshan,
Nice to know that you feel better with lithium and lamotrigine.
Lithium is time tested effective tablet for bipolar disorder, especially for hypomania.
Constipation is NOT a side effect of lithium. On the other hand, lithium being a salt causes loose motions in few persons. Find other causes for constipation and settle them continuing lithium.

I have been gaining too much weight since my asd closure back in 2014 december (first year mbbs. Until then I used to have a plateau weight of max 54 kg. Now i'm 81.80 kg and since 2015 i'm on psy meds (currently on oxcarbazepine 450 and sertraline 100 - both od). I took a usg in 2017 and was diagnosed with pcos. Currently i'm trying to lose weight but futile. I would like to know if there is any supplement (other than metformin to reduce insulin resistance) which might help me accelerate the weight loss.

Oleptal dt 300 tablet is an anti-epileptic medicine. It is used to treat and prevent seizures associated with epilepsy. It is important to not stop taking this medicine abruptly without consulting your doctor as it may increase the occurrence of fits. The type of seizure may not be amenable to this drug and need to change the tablet.

I have bipolar disorder diagnosed in 2010. Presently I am taking Lovax 300 mg (Oxcarbazepine) x 2 times, mortimer 25 mg (Nortriptyline) x 1 at night. Alprax 0.25 mg x 2 times. My problem is Lovax 300 mg which is a mood stabilizer works OK but causes side effect of severe 24 hrs lower back pain. As soon as I stop taking it, my lower back pain stops fully in 4-5 days. This I have tried 2 - 3 times and I can confirm it, lower back pain is side effect of Lovax 300 mg. Presently I stopped it since last 7 days and I am feeling depressed and suicidal. I have taken Torvate Chrono 400 mg x 2 as mood stabilizer for 6 years, it worked but caused high serum ammonia in the end and severe lethargy and sleepiness in daytime so stopped it. Lithium gave me side effect of burning sensation in urine along with feverish feeling, plus I have severe diabetes so had to stop it. Can you suggest a mood stabilizer which I should take? Shall intake Torvate Chrono again?

The 3 main mood stabilizers have been tried and found to produce side effects for you. There are others but less effective, either you chose the best amongst the ones causing least side effect or try alternative by consulting a psychiatrist. All the best.
