Mr. lybrate-user, Diabetes is well controlled mainly because of drugs that you are taking. Therefore, the present treatment has to be continued along with that you will have to exercise regularly, plus take a properly planned and restricted diet that provides exact amount of calories based on ideal body weight (65 kgs), extent of daily exercise and sugar levels. Thanks.

Kidney damage can be prevented by maintaining good blood sugar and BP control. Apart from medications for diabetes and bp you should follow strict Diabetic diet, avoid oily, fatty and fried items with regular physical activity. Monitor your blood sugar and BP and serum creatinine regularly accordingly medications will be recommended. All the best.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
Usually when kidney function is reduced and eGFR is <45 ml/minute, metformin may be discontinued. However, discontinuation does lead to blood glucose levels going haywire and may need increased Insulin dosage.
So pleas let me know following: serum creatinine level, height, weight to calculate your eGFR. Or if already it is mentioned please do give that info. Because on discontinuing metformin glucose level tends go up. Thanks.
