Diphtheria and tetanus toxoids are some of the most stable vaccines in common use. They are stable at temperatures of 2 to 8°c for years, at room temperature for months, and at 37°c for weeks. At the temperature of 45°c the degradation of toxoids is accelerated and their potency can decline during a few weeks.

A routine tetanus toxoid is also not necessary if one is previously fully immunised. In case one is not, then the toxoid is administered within the first 24 hours after the injury.
