Mr. lybrate-user, thanks for the query.
Hypothyroidism is a hormone (thyroxine) deficiency disorder, where your thyroid gland is either not producing enough thyroxine (t4) or does not produce it at all. Therefore there is a need to give daily supplementation of this hormone for life time. There is no other option at all. One can not give "injectable" thyroxine as there is none. One has to take adequate amount of levothyroxine and maintain tsh around 3 to 4 mu/l, so that all the symptoms are ...more

Mr. lybrate-user, Hypothyroidism is a hormone deficiency disorder, hence there has to be a constant supplement of that hormone for lifetime. Therefore, treatment will have to go on for lifetime. If one is on treatment, then ideally TSH levels should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L, to be free from all the symptoms. Weight gain is in fact a common manifestation of hypothyroidism. So check TSH level and if it is higher than above mentioned, then there needs to be an increase in the dosage of thy...more

lybrate-user, If you are on thyroxine tablets (50 mcg), means you have hypothyroidism. It would be better if you had given total results of thyroid assay. Usually hypothyroidism leads to increased weight. Hyperthyroidism can cause weight loss. But the treatment is anti-thyroid drugs. Thanks.

lybrate-user ji, Thanks for the query.
I am sure the day Thyroxine was prescribed to you all the precautions regarding taking the tablet and about food etc must have been explained to you. I am a bit surprised because of this question. Thyroxine tablet should be taken early morning on empty stomach, there after nothing should be taken for at least 1 to 1 and half hour. Plus you should avoid soy beans and soy containing foods. Other precautions include - always take whole grain flour for prep...more

Better to take such type of treatment go for homoeopathic treatment. Its is safe and effective. And also you don't need life long medication. Certain duration if you do proper medication you may not need further any stress to continuing your complain again. And also you may get better in your all complain like GERD, vitamin deficiency.

Mr Satyeshwar, TSH level mentioned (9 milli units / ml) is after taking 50 mcg throxine for some time or is it before starting the treatment? If it is current, that is after taking treatment, then dose of thyroxine needs to be increased. Plus looking at height and weight your BMI is 30.12 kg/M2, which shows grade 1 obesity. Your ideal body weight should be 58 kgs. Hence regular exercise and diet control also required.

Hello, The solution is to bring TSH level down to 3 to 4 mU/L, then only all the symptoms related to hypothyroidism are in control. You will have to check TSH level after 6 to 8 weeks of starting treatment with thyroxine or the current dose that is being taken. If TSH level is not as mentioned above then dose may have to be increased. Thanks.

Hello, Thanks for the query.
Since you are already on treatment with Thyroxine tablets (50 mcg/d), you will have to look at the TSH level, it should be maintained <3 mU/L to be free from all the symptoms. I can definitely guide you in controlling the condition effectively and be free from all the problems. If you come in a private conversation with following details: T4, T3 & TSH levels, weight and height, current dietary pattern and extent of daily exercise, then I will be able to guide spe...more

Hello, Thanks for the query.
For treating hypothyroidism the only therapy is to take adequate dosage of Levothyroxine and bring TSH level to around 3 to 4 mU/L. Since it is a hormone (Thyroxine) deficiency disorder, only supplementation of that hormone in the form of Levothyroxine is the treatment. Both Ayurveda and Homeopathy have no other treatment. Even though a lot of claims are made about treating or curing the condition. Thanks.
