Occupational Therapist•Bangalore
Its a progressive degenerative disease. If it is the correct diagnoses for your father then he can maintain the remaining strength and slow down the regression by doing maintainence therapy under any good occupational therapist. If required they will provide splints to support the functional independence.

Hi
first we have to confirm beyond doubt the diagnosis of motor neuron disease by doing enmg test. If diagnosis is confirmed and there was no other cause found, then there is no definitive treatment which can improve or treat mnd. As he is already on riluzole, he needs to continue taking riluzole which may slow the disease progression marginally. Ivig is not found to be beneficial and at the moment there is no disease modifying treatment available for mnd,

Till date there is no therapy or medicine to cure als. Riluzole is the only available till date which can partially delay the progression of disease for 2-3 years. Stem cell therapy is being tried in some places with partial response, but still it is in experimental stage. Some newer therapies now under trial phase. If some of these therapy become successful it will create some hope in future.
