Alcohol dependence involves intense craving or desire to drink alcohol. People drink for pleasure or rationalize it on external factors like family problems, work tension, etc. They drink continuously, i.e. Almost daily or even weekly once or twice with withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, bodily damage, etc.

Dear lybrate user,
you may need a bit of willpower to stop your habit of drinking alcohol permanently. You could easily abstain yourself from alcohol during the initial 2-3 days. But after few days of abstaining from alcohol you will feel a strong craving to drink just one peg of alcohol whenever you face any tense situation.
Here lies your real test. You cannot satisfy yourself with just only one peg. You will need a lot of willpower to resist that craving & face any tense situation wit...more

You should enroll him in organizations like Alcohol Anonymous. Where there are groups of people with similar problems. They discuss, express there problems and also share stories how they got out of it. This acts as effective tools for behavior modification and de-addiction.

Dear lybrateuser,
-It is better to avoid alcohol if you do not take, as after starting it becomes a habit & the intake also keeps increasing
-it adds only empty calories to the diet which can increase weight along with the snacks which one has, also increases body & blood fat which is harmful for the body .

You do not state how much alcohol he consumes. Sometimes, rather innocently many wives believe that if a man drinks, he is an alcoholic and label him so. This has often been proved wrong and has also'made' an alcoholic out of one who is not by the mere suggestion and insistence of it. If other things are normal, a man may consume up to two drinks a day and it is perfectly alright. If on the other hand he cannot hold that drink then it is too much for his constitution. The ideal way I look at alc...more

There is no black or white, good or bad in the food/drinks we consume. We are so obsessed by trying to incorporate good in our lifestyle.
Beer is a good diuretic, so it may help in flushing out in urine infections and kidney stones but obviously it is an insult to liver and reduces the ph of our system making it more acidic. Though much less than the hard liquor.
Drink beer for'high" and not for health:) do.

Hi there are systematic methods to reduce and even stop drinking alcohol even if it has gone to the stage of addiction. This may involve a systematic deaddiction process, group therapy, aversion therapy and individual counselling. But the biggest blockage is the all these methods can be used only if your father is motivated.

You will have some trouble getting sleep after quitting alcohol but that will disappear with time. Regarding your drinking habit, it matters a lot that you feel like drinking every day, and as long as you need your drink you are in trouble. This could lead to increased tolerance levels so that over time you will need to drink more to get the same or greater effect. You need to identify why you need to drink, and go back into your childhood to find out other influences on your personality that ma...more

If this person has a desire to quit drinking, that is a good starting point. In that case do the following: under such circumstances it is best that you admit him into a de-addiction center and let him stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the drinking just to ease the initial craving and to act as an antabuse i. E.
