About Pyrimethamine

Pyrimethamine is used in a combination with other medicines, to treat major parasite infections that effect the brain, eyes or other parts of the body. It is also used to prevent the onset of parasite infection in patients who are suffering from HIV. The drug is known as an antiparasitic and essentially kills parasites.

The drug should be taken exactly as advised by your health care provider. Meant for oral consumption, doctors generally prescribe Pyrimethamine once or 2 times daily. In order to prevent the occurrence of kidney issues, patients taking this Pyrimethamine should drink a lot of fluids.

Common side effects of Pyrimethamine are nausea, vomiting and appetite loss. Certain serious side effects that may occur are blood problems, bruising, chills, fever, irregular heart beat and breathing issues. In case you experience any of the more major side effects, seek immediate medical help.

    This medication falls under the category of an antimalarial drug belonging to class is a Dihydrofolate Reductase Inhibitor. It causes inhibition of DHFR (dihydrofolate reductase) enzyme. It obstructs the biosynthesis of pyrimidines and purines which are vital for the synthesis and expansion of DNA cells.
