About Pirfenidone

Pirfenidone is an antifibrotic agent. It is used to treat mild cases of a lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The exact working of this medication is not known.

On using this medication you may experience side effects such as muscle pain, sneezing, dizziness, reduced appetite, sudden weight loss, difficulty with sleeping, heartburn, acidity, change in taste, weakness, fatigue, headache, runny nose, stomach upset, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash and redness. If you face any allergic reactions or adverse reactions seek the help of your health care provider right away.

Before using this medication notify your doctor if: you are allergic to any of the ingredients contained within Pirfenidone, you have liver /kidney problems, you have any other allergies, you smoke, you are taking any other medications that may increase the chances of sunburn, you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant or are nursing a baby.

The dosage for this medication should be prescribed by the doctor based on your condition. The usual dose in adults for treating Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is 267 mg orally thrice a day over a period of 1-7 days and 534 mg from days 8-14.

    How does this medication work?

    This medication works by preventing collagen synthesis, suppresses profibrotic cytokines and reduces fibroblast multiplication. The drug results in the decrease of TGF-beta2 mRNA and TGF-beta2 protein levels as a consequence of the decline of the expression and prevention of the TGF-beta pro-protein convertase furin.
