There is no better or inferior medicine, they act in a very complex manner and varies between individuals to individuals, so consult your psychiatrist and work with them to find the right medication and also side effects and tests need to be done to monitor the medications.

Both drugs have their own merits and demerits, though they are given for the same purposes. In some individuals desvenlafaxine works better than mirtazapine and vice versa. It is the Doctor Who observes and chooses the better one for the individual need.

Mr. lybrate-user, you do not get addicted to mirtazapine. There can be some withdrawal symptoms such as sleeplessness, irritability, but not with such a small dose.

If patients are experiencing sexual dysfunction with an ssri, I think it's reasonable to offer them the option to switch to another medication, and vortioxetine has clearly demonstrated a benefit for patients with treatment-emergent sexual dysfunction.

Dear lybrate-user,
by this time of 6 months, you might have developed tolerance to sedation of mirtazapine. So, you may not feel lethargic or drowsy due to mirtazapine. If you skip the dose, it takes again 2-3 weeks to start its action. Not a good idea. You can ask your doctor for a non sedating antidepressant in the next follow up.

Dear Famish,
Mirtazapine is sedating. But in your case, it is NOT prescribed for sedation. Its antidepressant effect will be useful - not only in insomnia but also in other symptoms. The prescription starts with 7.5 mg and goes on building upto even 90 mg to get over depression. Generally the doctor will try with the lowest dose for 2-3 weeks and increase it depending on the benefit and side effects. Vortioxetine is comparatively a newer antidepressant and you have to try out the dose. Again...more
